Customer Reviews of 10 Feather Razor Blades NEW Hi-stainless Double EdgeCustomer Review: Lives up to its reputation for sharpness, but the warnings are overstated Summary: 5 Stars
Feathers have a reputation for being the sharpest blade, but also the one that lends itself to the most nicks, the one that requires the most skill to handle. So far I've tried three blades - Merkurs were dull and gave an awful shave as well as a number of nicks (due to me trying to shave closer and applying pressure and taking many passes), Derby's are excellent but do tend to irritate my skin a bit after I've gone against the grain. With Derby's, I have to do a number of passes to get a good shave, so irritation is unavoidable. The Feather I just shaved with gave me a great shave just by going with the grain. I would probably be happy enough with that on most days, but surprised that I had no nicks given that I'm a relative newbie to DE shaving and Feathers are supposed to be like samurai swords, only to be handled by the masters, I then decided to go against the grain for some extra closeness. The only nick was on my neck where I had a big razor bump (or a pimple?) and the blade, true to its reputation, just lopped it off. It's not a total wrecking machine though -- I do have some very little bumps around my chin area but it didn't lop those off.
A good measure of irritation comes from what I do after the shave. I have a problem with ingrown hairs, so to prevent those I recently learned to apply 10% glycolic acid cream immediately after each shave. Applying the acid after shaving with the Derby's leads to an incredible amount of stinging, so ridiculous the pain that I end up laughing like a lunatic in an effort to bear it. I applied the acid after the shave with the Feather, expecting the worst, but surprisingly there was only some mild stinging. Some aloe on top of that and I was a happy man.
They say that every man is different and there will never be a consensus on the best blade, but I'll throw my hat in and say the Feather is the best blade. And you'd think it would have to be, since it is indisputably the sharpest, which implies that it shaves as closely as another blade with less pressure -- and isn't that the formula for less irritation?
Customer Review: Almost unforgivingly sharp Summary: 4 Stars
Through Amazon (who seems bent onto getting me shaving related coupons and asking for reviews) I got free Feather blades when I bought my regular Merkur blades. I have never tried Japanese blades before ... for the past years I used only Merkur blades or Gillette disposables (since now you cannot fly with blades).
The Feather blades were a truly new experience - I thought I forgot how to shave. The difference in the right amount of pressure between Merkurs and Feathers is almost as big as the difference in pressure between Merkurs and disposables. You REALLY have to pay attention to how much of your skin you let yourself shade with the Feathers. Grantedly the shave is close and the initial cut impeccable (they become dull quick - dull relative to their initial sharpness). But the level off everything they touch on your face almost regardless of how aggressive your shave/razor is. Since they are so unforgiving yet this sharpness dulls relatively quickly I wanted to continue using Merkur blades.
However, I learned that these blades CAN be used with adjustable razors set at the minimum. I have done so, and there are no more cuts and the shave is close. The dullness is still a problem but the blades are very good the first couple of times, on par with the Merkurs I am used to.
Customer Review: Simply The Best Summary: 5 Stars
I read the reviews of these blades and was a bit intimidated at first. Back in my younger days, I had used a Gillette double-edged razor and blades that had given my face the Freddie Kruger treatment. That's why had gone the electric razor route for so many years. Being the adventurous type, I wanted to give blade shaving another shot, so I bought a Merkur long handled razor, some Feather blades, Col. Conk soap, and a brush after reading reviews here and watching some Youtube videos.
I started my blade shaving re-education with the sample Merkur blade that came with the razor. It was okay, but nothing outstanding. Then I popped in a Feather blade. Night and day difference. They are very sharp, which is a good thing. Don't press, let the razor do the work and take your time. You will be rewarded with a very close comfortable shave. They will now be my only blade. Even when I nick myself or shave too close, it really isn't very uncomfortable. Not like the three-day burn and nasty bumps of old that the Gillette butter-knife blades used to give me.
All-in-all, an excellent blade that gives the best shave I've yet experienced. With careful use, it will do the same for you. Highly recommended.
Customer Review: Not what I expected Summary: 3 Stars
When hearing rave reviews about this brand of blade I had high expectations. They are sharp, but not super sharp like some led me to believe. I think they do hold up as good as any other blade I have tried or better, I just do not feel the extra cost is worth it. I feel like a cheaper blade such as Derby, Astra, .. ex... give just as close of a shave and come out cheaper in the long run. I did not experience any of the horror stories about nicks and bleeding to death. I think I nicked myself once with this blade and it was because of a defected top to my Merkur progress that I hope to get fixed. So do not be scared to try these out even if you're a beginner. If you take your time and use little to no pressure on the razor then even if you do nick your self it should be a small enough nick that will stop bleeding in less than a minute. It is not like cutting your self with a cartridge blade that rips into the skin on the rare occasions they do cut you. Atlas, ultimately each blade will be different with each persons beard and skin, so the only way to know is to stop reading the reviews and just start trying different ones until your happy with the experience.
Customer Review: These are great blades Summary: 5 Stars
Take my review with a grain of salt. I've only shaved with a single blade twice. I bought a Merkur 38c. The first time I tried it, I used the Merker blade that came with the razor. I found that it caught and pulled on my beard, and frankly it made me nervous because I thought I was going to cut myself. After reading all of the reviews I decided cautiously to switch to the feather blades. What a difference. The blades allowed me to use the weight of the razor to shave, and stopped the skipping and sticking. I got an extremely close shave, and even with my VERY sensitive skin, no razor burn or nicks. You do have to be careful, and go slowly. I was still a bit cautious around my lips and under my nose, but this was mostly just getting used to a safety razor and single blade. What an excellent experience though. My face feels so much better than with my old Mach 3, and I got a very close shave. FYI, I use Olivier olive oil shaving soap and a badger hair brush by Colonel Conk.
