I call these things treats because unlike pills, you actually feel like you're getting a good snack when you have one of these Adora calcium supplements. I first found them in a high end store and almost didn't get them because they were a little pricey, but I am notorious for never taking my supplements on a consistent schedule. Its just too hard to remember those pills in the morning, however, its not too hard to remember a piece of dark chocolate. Because of this, my fiance insisted that we get these for me to try. And I've actually been fairly consistent with them.
And these are very good dark chocolate. I'm not a fan of sweets to begin with but I do like dark chocolate, the more bitter the better. This provides that deep cocoa taste and it is quite bitter. Those who prefer milk chocolate probably wouldn't want to bite into one of these (but that's ok they have these in milk chocolate too!). For those of you thinking baking materials that will add calcium! Stop. I can't see that working out in any way successful. These don't have the usual give of chocolate and they almost snap when you bite into them because they are on the harder side.
As a vitamin supplement these pack a good punch of calcium. 500 mg of calcium in fact per each piece of chocolate. They also include Vitamin's D2 and K1. The bag recommends that you take up to 3 per day (but don't exceed 2000mg of calcium a day), however, I find that just one is fine to supplement a regular diet that has dairy products in it. There actually is a little chart on the back of the bag that shows per age how much calcium to intake a day. There is also a warning, that because of the Vitamin K, you should ask your doctor before eating these if you are on blood thinning medicine.
The ingredients in these pieces of chocolate are fairly simple as well. Chocolate liquor, sugar, calcium carbonate, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, vanilla, vitamin K1, and vitamin D2. That's not a bad list for something that has supplements in it. The only allergy warnings are for milk and nuts (there are no nuts in the product, it may have just come in contact with them). Because this is chocolate though there is some fat in this little piece of calcium, 2g actually per disk. There is also 2 g of sugar per disk as well and it all adds up to about 30 calories per piece. This may be a little high for someone just wanting a supplement and can be considered a negative for this product. But, if you have the open calories in your diet, this is a good way to go.
The cost would be another negative for this product. I've seen the bags range from $3.50 on clearance to about $10 a packet. While they are fairly expensive they come in 30 disks per package which equals about a month of good supplements/treats combination for less than .50 a day. And thinking of it in those terms, its not really that bad of a deal. Most people spend 4-5x that much on a froofy coffee drink that doesn't add nutritional value.
These chocolates have definitely helped me stay on top of my calcium intake. I look forward to eating them every day and they provide a bit of "dessert" to my morning breakfast.
