Customer Reviews of Almay Smart Shade Blush, Pink 010, 0.5-Ounce Tubes (Pack of 2)Customer Review: A rosy blush which is not terribly noticeable but could be a great teen product! Summary: 4 Stars
It is a wonderful concept put forward by Almay, with their blush I tried and am now reviewing. The basic thrust of the idea (by the way, this same idea has been attempted before, year after year by other companies. I am aware of that) is that this blush, which I received in a color called "pink rose", is something they call "smart shade" blush. The next line on the package says: "transforms into your ideal blush shade"!
This transformation didn't happen in my case. I was very disappointed as I love makeup!
I understand what Almay is referring to. I have previously owned blush which, upon contact with my skin, adapted as if by magic to the specific skin type I have, only the blush which I purchased before actually accomplished what it set out to do much more effectively that this blush does.
I had two problems in particular with this Almay blush, which, incidentally, was definitely a color I would have chosen for myself if I had just been wandering through a store or seen it on Amazon. I like the look of the color. It is very pretty, a cool, light mauve-y pink. When I opened the tube, I was delighted as it looked like a product by Stila which I already own and use frequently.
The first problem was this. No matter how much I applied to my cheeks, using my fingertips as they instruct on the tube and the package, and then removed, in order RE-apply in different amounts, and then tried to put on again in some sort of different manner, in ever more concerted attempts to get a reaction from this blush, in order to give this product a "fighting chance" at a good review, it just had NO EFFECT upon my skin or my cheeks in any way, or my general "look".
How about this idea: purchase as a "first blush" for your daughter or niece. Sort of the way people buy training bras for kids who are "almost ready". This blush is entirely suitable for that. A teen could put on a ton of this (I remember loading up on make up and feeling really thrilled!) and look pretty much the same as when she began. Additionally, it does smooth out your skin tone a bit as well. This is a great boon to kids with unpredictable skin!
Another good thing: it has antioxidants, ginseng and ginko biloba in it. Good stuff, right? We all know that, right?
Now, I use lots of different kinds of makeup. I have tons and tons of different blushes. If you took them all out and stacked them up, I probably have 30 blushes: possibly even more. My love of make up is one reason why this was such a disappointment for me, personally.
On the other hand, I have a point I would like to make which could be the problem. Possibly the problem is ME: my extremely fair skin tone.
I know they say "adapts to all skin tones", but maybe my fair skin is just TOO FAIR FOR THIS ALMAY BLUSH TO WORK ITS MAGIC. I wonder.
I wonder if darker or yellower or more orange-y skin tones would benefit from/look nice using/accept better what this Almay Smart Shade Blush has to offer, where a Scottish redhead like me just doesn't get any "oomph" from it at all. It is as if I put my very own skin tone on, if you get what I am trying to say. Just a thought.
I could stop here, but I personally did have another "problem" wth this product. For me (maybe not for you) the texture of this blush was extremely unpleasant. I couldn't wait to wash my hands after putting this on my face repeatedly. I actually wanted to wash my face, too, after experimenting with it, and did. I washed everything all off when I was done.
I feel bad giving this blush a good-bad review, when it had some good things going for it. Therefore, I am going to give it an extra star for attempting an idea which I have always liked: make up which supposedly adjusts to a person's skin tone. That's a great idea. Containing some beneficial ingredients gets points from me as well. Consider buying a tube of this for the teen in your life if you want to give Almay's "smart shade" a try. She just might love it!
