Customer Reviews of As Seen On TV Gopher Pick Up and Retrieving ToolCustomer Review: Cheap counterfeit! Avoid avoid avoid!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I had an original set of Deluxe Gophers I bought directly off the infomercial about five years ago. They were sturdy, well-designed and could easily pick up a two-to-five pound object with no problem. Most importantly, the suction cups were FLEXIBLE, but also firm enough to grip tightly. They were perfect for lightbulbs, if that gives you any idea of what I'm talking about here.
Unfortunately, the screw holding one suction cup finally "stripped" (after using it about a hundred times a day, I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner) and I couldn't find replacement cups anywhere.
Amazon shows three different places to get these, and these particular ones, at $3.99, seem like a great deal. Trust me, they're not. The cups are not flexible, the cable from the handle to the ends rubs against the sharp end of the square aluminum shaft (that puppy isn't going to last a week) and the locking mechanism DOES NOT WORK! I got two pair, and they're both the same.
All the plastic fittings are blue, rather than red, and it doesn't say "Deluxe Gopher" anywhere on them (unlike the original, where it is prominantly displayed on the handle and etched on the metal "arms" at the end).
These are counterfeit. Don't buy them, or if you're still tempted by the price, just throw four bucks out the window and use the postage to go to BarStuck's and treat yourself to a fancy-schmancy coffee.
Customer Review: Not like original (check 5star review dates) Summary: 1 Stars
Avoid this thing like the bubonic plague! It isn't even a shadow of the original Gopher that was sturdy and served me well until I gave it to a needy friend thinking I could replace it with a couple of new ones (one for back up). A construction of absolute useless, cheap, flimsy, and fragile crap! I knew I'd been burned the minute I opened the package and removed this thing. It was not even close to the original in the touch and weight of it. It won't hold anything even close to the neighborhood a pound. The armature when folded out is loose and wobbles side to side out of the package without even initial use. It snapped first use when I attempted to retrieve a can of soup off the floor. These new manufactured pieces of s--- are a waste of money. This scumbag company is just cashing in on the name and not giving you any quality whatsoever! LOOK AT THE 5STAR REVIEW DATES. NONE OF THEM CURRENT OTHER THAN THE 1STAR REVIEW DATED IN 2009. This thing is not the same functioning Gopher as introduced by the late Billy Mays. RIP Billy! You have been informed it is your money.
Customer Review: Very handy! Summary: 5 Stars
My kids dropped some toys behind waist high organizing shelves and drawers, so I bought this to fish them out. I opened it up and ooooo it is fun to grab things with! I tilted the shelves and could easily pick up the little figurines and doll house furniture that fell behind. Since then I have also used it to get the saran wrap and alum foil boxes from behind the oven. Oh ya and I used it to help my husband route his mouse and cables and stuff around his desk and hutch very easily. He couldn't believe I bought this when it came in the mail, but it has come in handy so now he's fine with it hehehe. I dropped my glue stick and lotion behind my desk at work this week, and I'm pregnant and can't lie on the desk and squeeze back there to get them like I usually do, so I'm going to bring this to work tomorrow in my bag to get them out! Yay Gopher! And it does fold and unfold very well for storage and use : )
Customer Review: Tip Summary: 5 Stars
This looks like the ones I buy locally (like at Walgreens) for the same price. I was going through them though because the rubber tips strip the threads until I got this bright idea: before you even use it unscrew the rubber ends and put some super glue in the hole and screw back on. It will be solid then.
Now if I could find a tip for it breaking at the place where it folds.
I use a wheelchair and even though I have a lift on my chair things are often out of reach in the stores. This is such a handy helper and I haven't seen any other brand that comes near to this one. I tried a more expensive reacher and it was so wimpy I returned it.
Even if you have to buy a new one from time to time the price is right.
Customer Review: Good product with 2 big flaws. Summary: 3 Stars
The Gopher is a good product and you do not need to be disabled to use it. I find if you want to pick up something like a newspaper it is fine. But for heavier objects it is annoying because it closes in half. Get the ridget ones. Also the suction cups tips and the bars that hold the tips at the end popped off one day. I saw replacement parts for other reachers but not the Gopher.
I suggest getting a few of them because they are throw away products if they break. Because like windshield wipers when you need them you really need them and you would hate to have them break in the middle of a storm with no replacement on hand. The ridget ones ino carry bigget objects. But all and all if did what it is suppose to do,
