Customer Reviews of Basal Digital Thermometer

Customer Review: The best on the market, unfortunately.
Summary: 4 Stars

The Bad:
I've owned a BD digital thermometer for the last 8 years. My first one stopped working after 5 years. The replacement only lasted 2 years and was inconsistent from the day I got it. I actually bought 2 this time around to save on shipping, since I expect to replace it again.

The flaw in the product is that randomly it just stops working. Typically it takes between 90 seconds and 2 minutes to take a temperature, beeping every 4 seconds or so, ending with a string of beeps to let you know that it's done. Every 10 or 15 uses, the beeping begins to slow. Sometimes it takes 3 or 4 minutes and finally gives the ending beep. Sometimes it just doesn't ever stop. I timed it once out to 10 minutes with the last beep being at 7 1/2 minutes before I turned it off and tried it again. It does this more often when used to measure an actual fever.

The Good:
It's the best basal thermometer on the market. Perhaps that's because it's getting harder and harder to find one made by anyone else. But, when it actually works, it's an appropriately sensitive thermometer. And after all, the main reason to but a basal thermometer is for its sensitivity to 0.01 degrees. It does that, so I put up with its "idiosyncrasies"

Customer Review: Not for everyone
Summary: 2 Stars

My husband and I are on our 4th month trying to conceive. I have heard that a good way to gauge your ovulation time is with a basal thermometer, so I got one just to help the process along. After not even a month of using this I got tired of it. My temperatures were all over the place even though I was doing them at the same time every morning before I got out of bed.

I spoke with my Dr. about using these. She said that these are not for everyone. Some women don't have any correlation between their ovulation and their temperature changing. It was a lot more stress than it was worth, for me. There are a lot of things to keep track of in addition to just taking your temperature, and for me, it was just too much.

The thermometer itself does a fine job. The back light was nice and it takes the temperature accurately from what I could tell. It does take a while for it to take your temperature though. The constant beep while it's taking your temperature is a nice indicator that it is still working, but also annoying that it is continuous. It would be better if it just beeped when it was finished or if there was an error.

Customer Review: A very good basal thermometer
Summary: 5 Stars

Though I've never before bought or used a basal thermometer, and thusly have no comparison, this one has been accurate and reliable. The beeping function is definitely a plus- keeps you awake first thing in the morning for the 20-60 seconds or so that it takes, and lets you know it's working. To lessen the sound, I just cover the end of it (where the noise comes from) with my hand so as not to disturb my hubby or baby. Sometimes there are only 8 beeps before it's finished, sometimes as many as 13.
I definitely like that it has the recall function of the last temp. recorded, since I don't usually get right up to write down my temperature. The only thing I wish that it did would be to light up when the temp. is finalized, the way it lights up when you first turn it on. I'd kind of like to see what my temperature is right at that time. Since I take my temp. before sunrise, there's no light in my room and I wouldn't want to turn on the lamp and wake everyone up. But, it's not really a big deal since it does have the recall function.
In all, a great basal thermometer. Definitely a must-have for FAM!

Customer Review: Loud and it's hard to take off the cover. Otherwise, very good.
Summary: 4 Stars

First, this is a wonderfully reliable thermometer. It's not one that has the bouncing temp and the absence of the hundredths-place doesn't bother me a bit, that just makes it more consistent and easy to record. I like the weight of it and the back-light is perfect.

This is, however, a loud thermometer. It beeps to start, it beeps while it takes the temp, it beeps three times when it's done, then when you turn it off there's a looooooong sustained beep. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I have 6+ layers of masking tape over the "little hole" and it's still audible. Much better, but audible at about half the level of a 'normal' thermometer.

It's also hard to yank the stupid cover off, I have to use my teeth. I'm hoping this improves.

That being said, I would still purchase it again. It seems reliable, is made well and seems well-balanced. I can just not use the cover and turn it off after I've gotten up and left the room (or it turns itself off after about 30 minutes.) It has a 300-hour battery life so I'm not concerned about using it up too quickly.

Customer Review: Easy & reliable
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been using this thermometer for a few months now and love it. I read the negative reviews & think some women may have just gotten a lemon. Others are being way too picky. I keep it on my nightstand. When my alarm goes off, I shut off the alarm and immediately grab the thermometer to take my temp. It beeps intermittently to let me know its working then gives 3 quick, consecutive beeps to let me know its done. Then I shut it off and put it down. It stores the last temp taken so you do NOT need to record your temp right away on paper. I usually look at the temp before I shut it off. But when I get out of bed later, I just turn it back on when I'm ready to record the temp on my chart. Could they make that any more convenient? I think not. The beeping is a little loud in a quiet room, but I found that it doesn't really bother my husband b/c as I said I'm using it immediately after my alarm goes off. So he was awakened by that noise anyway. BBT charting can be frustrating & stressful. I think this thermometer makes it as convenient & easy as its going to get.
