Customer Review: Overpriced Saline Solution

This product works absolutely fine. My problem is with the price! Look at the ingredients on the bottle. Now look at the ingredients on a bottle of Bausch & Lomb saline solution. Look familiar? They are identical products, just in different size bottles. How in the world can they get away with charging twice as much for this tiny one ounce bottle as they get for a 12 ounce bottle of saline? This stuff costs more than 26 times as much per ounce as Bausch & Lomb saline solution.
What bothers me even more is that there is zero competition on the market for this product. A store brand could come in and make a killing selling a similar product at half the price. This price gouging has gone on so long that I can't help but believe that there is collusion and monopolistic behavior on the part of Bausch & Lomb. I can think of no reasonable explanation why there isn't any competition in this market.
The cost of this product is so obscene that I can't bring myself to buy it. I realized about 15 years ago that you can open these bottles up and refill them with basic saline solution. You just grab the nozzle, bend it sideways and it will pop right off. This is not without risk, as you are increasing your potential for infection. After hundreds of refills over the last 15 years I have never had a single problem, however. If you just practice some common sense and keep everything clean while you are refilling I believe the risk is quite low. Generally I'll refill a bottle for 3 or 4 years before replacing it.
Do I recommend that everyone start refilling their eye dropper bottles? Absolutely not. If you can't be bothered to wash your hands and work in a reasonably clean area, then you shouldn't be doing this. (Of course you shouldn't be wearing contact lenses either.) Do an internet search and you'll find that many other folks are doing the same thing. The way I see it, Bausch & Lomb is forcing contact lens wearers into this behavior by charging such exorbitant prices.
