Customer Review: Not as easy as 1-2-3 for me!

The box says this meter is as easy as 1-2-3, but that was not the case for me. I do have experience with some home health monitors (glucose and cholesterol) which are multiple use, electronic and use test strips. These in my experience are very simple to use. This single use meter by Biosafe was much more difficult for me. And at $25 per test, it is much more expensive considering that you may not succeed in getting a valid result. The difficulty lay in getting the proper amount of blood into the meter. You need to supply three large, hanging drops of blood to the meter in order for it to work. I used a 15 microliter capillary tube to collect the blood from my fingers and filled it three times using three different finger pricks. I squeezed the tube to insert the blood into the meter, but I found the blood would pool in the depression around the hole it was supposed to go down. I tapped the meter a lot and finally got a stick pin and managed to pop a bubble and it finally went down. I never could get the cross to turn "red", though, which indicates that there is enough blood for the meter to work. I finally pushed the plunger to start the test because you only get 10 minutes to fill the meter with blood. The quality check window showed that the meter was working and I did get a result, but I wasn't sure if the result was valid.
I called customer service to ask if the result was valid since the quality check window indicated that the meter had worked properly even though the cross never turned red. I found the "nurse" I spoke to to be more insulting than helpful. She basically said I couldn't read or follow directions since you are not supposed to push the plunger unless the cross is "red". So I wrote a letter to the company to explain what had happened when I tried to use their meter and to express my dissatisfaction with their customer service representative and to their credit, they shipped me another meter with a very nice note.
I wish there were an electronic multiple use meter (like they have in doctor's offices) that could be purchased for home use. At $25. a pop, this test is expensive considering it is single use and you risk not getting a result if you fail to fill the meter with the proper amount of blood in 10 minutes. If you do buy it, I recommend reading all instructions carefully before you start and wish you luck!
P.S. I repeated the test with the new meter and succeeded in getting the cross to turn red this time. You do have to wait a few minutes after you are done filling the reservoir with blood for the cross to turn red. The results between the two tests were within .5 g/dL of each other. I am satisfied with the product now.
