Right out of the package, I noticed the great, clean scent of this dryer bar. The application instruction sheet was even so deeply infused with the scent of the bar that it put out the wonderful, clean fragrance for days after I'd removed it from the box (a pleasant little plus as it sat on my coffee table until I pitched it out)!
Attaching the dryer bar to the drum wall was a snap, and I haven't had any issues with it coming loose. I put a few loads through my dryer after attaching the bar (including a load of darks), and have noticed no issues whatsoever with stains or residue on the fabrics once I remove them from the dryer. The only thing that I can speculate might be causing that issue for certain users is if your laundry is particularly wet when you put it in the dryer, but that's just a wild guess.
Overall, I think that this is a pretty great softener solution, especially if you have a tendency to forget to add fabric softener. Of course, the fact that it's there regardless of whether you want it or not may pose problems if you need to machine dry anything that specifically should not have softener added to it (such as microfiber cleaning cloths or children's clothes, if they're not supposed to be softened with fabric softener). Outside of those few very specific and limited cases, though, this is a great "stick it and forget it" softening solution.

*UPDATE*
Nearly three months later, the first Bounce dryer bar that I got is still going strong in my dryer, and still giving me no trouble whatsoever. Its clean, fresh fragrance has held out, and I truly do feel that it softens just as well as the liquid softener does. When I forget to add liquid softener, this bar does just as good a job at softening as the liquid or sheet softeners out there. Still enjoying my Bounce dryer bar!

*SUBSEQUENT UPDATE*
I've now had the SAME Bounce dryer bar for OVER six months, and it's only NOW looking like it's time to replace it. Granted, I only do a load or two about once every week to ten days, but it's still doing just as great a job at softening my clothes, removing static cling, and scenting my clothes with a great, fresh clean smell, even after all of this time. There's never been any residue on my laundered items from this bar, and it's lasted well beyond any time period that I would've expected! What more could you ask? Definitely worth it!

*FURTHER UPDATE*
I've since replaced my Bounce dryer bar, and plan to continue to keep these in my dryer barrel. I've never experienced any issues with residue, or anything that tarnishes my original opinion of these bars. They CAN be a bit pricey, but if you just wait for a good sale price on these, or use a coupon on your purchase, that helps to address the "cost effectiveness" issue. One other caveat, though (and one I learned the HARD way): don't add tennis balls or gym shoes to dry a duvet cover or anything similarly large and more challenging, with the bar still in the holder.
I had only JUST dished out about eight bucks at my local grocery store to buy a 4 month bar, and decided I needed to try something more effective in drying my duvet cover (that is forever tangling on itself in the dryer). So, going by suggestions found in the online community, I tossed my freshly laundered duvet cover into my dryer with a nice, clean gym shoe. Well, long story short, I can't say that the shoe completely fixed the tangling issue, but I CAN say that the shoe completely decimated my two-day old dryer bar. In continually banging against the walls of the dryer drum, it shattered my Bounce bar into tiny pieces. So, next time around, I'll remove the bar from the holder. Just thought I'd suggest it here, in hopes I could help someone else out there to not repeat my same pricey mistake! ; )
