Customer Reviews of Braun 8595 Activator Self-Cleaning Shaving System with LCD DisplayCustomer Review: Sensitive Skin - Disappointed Summary: 2 Stars
While the Braun Activator may work very well for some (or even most) people, it should be noted that it doesn't work well for everyone. For years I have shaved with a blade (Gilette Mach 3). I have sensitive skin and typically shave every other day. I decided to purchase an electric razor with the hopes that I could shave daily. I decided to purchase the best razor that money could buy and found myself owning the Braun Activator.
I used the Activator for the required 30 days and was very disappointed. The Activator did a nice job on most of my face, cutting just as close as a blade on my cheeks. However, it has difficulty in problem areas. The worst problem area is the neck. Even after going over my neck multiple times, the Activator could not cut all the hairs. I found myself cleaning up with a blade after irritating my skin with the Activator. Realizing that the Activator took twice as long to shave, couldn't shave my neck, and I still had to use a blade, I sent my Activator back.
I hope anyone that purchases an Activator has better luck than I did. As I said, I'm sure it works very well for most people. However, if you have sensitive skin - beware.
Customer Review: Really good razor Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this razor to replace my Remington TCT3 which I rate highly and have reviewed on here too.
I had a Braun previously to the Remington but that was beaten hands down by the TCT3 for overall performance. This Braun, however, is a very different story. Its precision head and comb basically make it the best electric razor that I have ever used for removing virtually all kinds of hairs. It deals swiftly and effectively with hair that lies flat against the skin which is usually becomes that scourge of dry shaving - the ingrowing hair.
It will deal with conventional bristles over large areas like the cheek just as effectively as the TCT3 but it takes a little longer because it has two foils instead of the TCT3's three.
The cleaning system is superb, and gives a really refreshing shave after having been carried out. I would recommend using it maybe only weekly though, as daily is wasteful, and not called for when you can use the effective brush provided. Recharging can be carried out via the cleaner or the lead supplied. The charges last for about ten days before there is a need for recharging again.
All in all a great shaver and to be recommended.
Customer Review: Good shaver, costly refill cartridge Summary: 4 Stars
I got this for my husband and he absolutely loves it. It's a bit pricey, but you will love this.
Money saving tip: (1)If there's a Costco near you, get the 8595 Series from there for about $160. It comes with extra foil and cutter (retail approx. $40) and travel case. (2)Do not discard the plastic plug that comes with the cartridge. It will make your cartridge last longer. If you keep the plug on the cartridge between shaving/cleaning, you will replace it about once every TWO to THREE months instead of replacing it once a month (Braun recommends you replace the cartridge after 30 uses, based on daily use. Even if you don't shave everyday, this alcohol-based solution evaporates).
And don't believe Amazon's sales pitch for the cartridge: Nobody sells the pair of cartridges for $20. Everywhere, the pair sells for $9.99. The plus side of buying the cartridge here is that you can qualify for free shipping ("super saver shipping"), and no sales tax depending on which state you live in.
So invest a little--say goodbye to the stubble and shaving cream mess, to nicks and cuts, and say hello to this wonderful new system! Happy shaving!!!!!!!!!
Customer Review: only good thing is the 30 day money back guarantee Summary: 1 Stars
I gave up on electric shavers about 25 years ago, but a friend of mine just got a Braun Activator and was so enthusiastic about it that I decided to give it a try.
Well, it appears that electric shaving technology hasn't improved much in the last 25 years - it has just become more expensive.
Admittedly I have very sensitive skin and a very tough beard but I thought that surely this miracle of 21st century technology could cope with that but, sadly, it couldn't.
I found that the shave was very uneven and I had to go over a particular area up 8 or 10 times just to get most (but not all) of the hairs. Trying to use it on anything more than a single day's growth was just hopeless and the best that I ever achieved was the feeling of fine sandpaper.
If you like gadgets this shaver certainly has them - cool blue lights, LCD displays, and an ugly and awkwardly shaped charger and cleaning station.
Probably if you are used to electric shavers this one is OK (but overpriced) but it wasn't nearly good enough for me to want to switch back.
After 3 weeks I am packing it up and sending it back for a refund.
Customer Review: Self-cleaing is cool, actual shave is mediocre Summary: 2 Stars
I have had a Braun 6520 for 4.5 years. My Dad gave me his Braun 8595 because he bought the new model. He said the cutter and foil were relatively new (6 months or a year old). He said I just needed to buy the cleaning catridge. I spent about $11. My first shave and it felt as if it was pulling the hairs out, not cutting. I gave it a few days, but didn't feel it was doing any better a job than my 6520, which worked fine. I decided to return the unit to my father as I no longer had any interest in painful shaves. I told him if he bought me a new cutter and foil I'd try again. I didn't want to spend the $40 on it without knowing it would solve my problem. Well, after I got the new cutter and foil, I tried again. It did not pull, but did not shave any better than the 6520. To put it in persepctive, the 6520 has the original cutter and foil (4.5 years old now) and has not been cleaned in about 6 months or more and did an equal job. Therefore, unless the cleaning mechanism intrigues you, the cost is unjustified. I tried the new model also and didn't think it was any better. Therefore, if you find a less expensive model, you may want to buy that instead.
