Customer Review: Fixing the FreeControl = excellent shaver

The FreeControl is a nicely-built shaver and an excellent value with one glaring, user-fixable design defect. The good features include relatively low price, solid construction, comfortable operation, good power handling and battery life, rinsability, and the potential for a close shave (see below).
The design problem is with the "FreeFloat" foil suspension system. The black plastic head of the razor contains a movable, translucent plastic insert that holds the foil. When the head is on the razor, the foil sits on top of the cutter block and the cutter block post is spring-loaded. This allows the foil to depress directly down into the head or angle to the side when pressure is applied. Unfortunately, this design also allows the translucent holder and foil to move side-to-side slightly. If enough hair enters the foil, the foil will vibrate side-to-side with the cutter block making a loud buzz, and the cut will be poor and ragged. To get a clean cut, it's necessary to go over the spot many times, or just give up and use the trimmer. The FreeControl may be able to handle a teenager, but I'm over 50 (though my beard is not heavy) and I encounter this problem with one day's growth on some parts of my face. With more than one day's growth it isn't really possible to shave adequately.
The fix is simple. You need to stop the sideways vibration of the foil holder. Just mount the head on the razor so that the foil is supported by the cutter block, cut a small piece of black plastic electrical tape and lay it across the seam between the removable black plastic head and the translucent foil holder. This will adequately prevent sideways vibration, and some "floating" will still occur since the opposite side of the foil holder can still depress freely. Note that the tape is between the plastic head and the translucent foil holder, not between the razor and the head. Thus the head is still removable and the tape is barely noticeable. I've been using the shaver this way for about a month and I'm very happy with it. Without the tape, I'd rate this razor one star. With the tape, perhaps 4 stars and 5 stars for value.
The ironic thing is that floating heads on razors this size provide at best a marginal benefit. The best electric razor I ever had was a Braun 5567 (about 15 years ago) with a fixed screen and other features fairly similar to the FreeControl. If I could find another razor just like that, I'd buy it in a second. With the tape, the FreeControl is close and I don't notice any difference in comfort related to the tape.
