Customer Review: Great Shaver, Manual Too Simple
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm a mechanical engineer in his 40's. Have owned Norelco and Remington shavers previously. Neither satisfied, partly due to need to purchase new blades at high prices. For the Remington Titanium (the 400, I think), replacement blades were recommended at 6 months, but you can't buy them anywhere! And, it needs them. I am very happy with the Braun. As I read in many reviews (thanks for writing!), it is much more comfortable than the Remington. It still takes some work to get into the spots on the left and right sides of my neck, but it DOES work better than the Remington ever did. As to the manual - it's very simple. Too simple. It says to charge for 4 hours, but doesn't say if you can leave it plugged into the charger overnight. Would that be OK or would it damage it? Yes, it does have a quick charge. I have been using the razor for over a week, and I'm still on the first charge. Also, the manual says there are two ways to clean it: wash it OR brush, then oil. Why don't you have to oil it after washing it? Seems to me that washing would degrease it more than brushing would. But, the manual is too short to address this. Tried to submit an email to Braun from their web site, but I could not get it to work. I'm very good at computers, so I'm sure it's some problem with their site. I called & somebody answered and talked to me, but they were not able to answer my technical questions. They just told me what it says in the manual. That was a dead end. Still, it's a great shaver. Also, know that the series 370 is the same as the Contour 5885 and some others. If you search long enough on the Braun web site, you can figure this out. I mention this because I ordered a 370 and received the other one.

Customer Review: Better than they used to be....
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm 61 years old and haven't used an electric shaver since I was in my teens. I hated the one that I had received for a gift back then and have been using blades ever since.

For whatever reason (perhaps the ridiculous cost of blades these days) I decided to give an electric a second chance. Since Braun seems to be the brand of choice for most men using electrics, I purchased a Braun 5885 Contour a few weeks ago.

Although it's still early in the game, I have to admit that electric shavers have improved dramatically since my experience 40+ years ago. While I still don't think it's "blade close", my Braun is a lot more comfortable to use. I also like the fact that Gillette no longer can hold the $4 per blade gun to my head.

It remains to be seen whether or not I remain satisfied with this shaver after a few months use. However, right now, I can't imagine myself ever buying another razor blade.

Edited: It's been a little over 6 months since my review above.

Having used the shaver daily, I am still satisified with it. As I already mentioned, it does not shave as close as a blade. Given that it does not irritate my neck (I have a beard and shave my neck only), and has already paid for itself by keeping Mr. Gillette out of my wallet, I would recommend this shaver to anyone who wants to try an electric.

I find that the LED's very accurately forecast when charging is needed. For me, that's about every two weeks. Other than cleaning and putting two drops of oil on the blades each week, shaving with the Braun is not nearly the chore I was used to with conventional blades and shave cream.

Customer Review: Terrible results on my neck
Summary: 2 Stars

I'm bad about leaving my razor behind when I travel. I have solved that by keeping a second razor in my travel kit and swapping them when I charge he home unit. I had been using rotary razors all my life, but decided to try a Braun. Eight months ago I bought this razor and a similarly-priced Norelco.

The Braun looks really nice. The fit and finish is excellent. It's maybe a little bit heavy, albeit the heft gives it a solid feel. The Braun is substantially louder than the Norelco.

The difference in the quality of the shave is huge. The Norelco tends to do a very good job on the first pass.

In contrast, the Braun has a *very* difficult time with the soft areas, my neck in particular. Going over and over it with the broad side of the razor doesn't appear to improve the shave beyond what was done in the first pass. If I stand there and run the razor length-wise across my neck over and over in various directions, then it will, eventually, produce a decent shave. I would estimate that it takes three to five times longer for the Braun to get the same results on my neck as the Norelco.

Also, despite the weight (which implies to me a large battery) the Braun does not hold a charge nearly as long as the Norelco. After sitting in my travel kit for a few weeks, when switching back to the Braun, it will only work for a couple of sessions before needing to be recharged. The Norelco does not appear to bleed its charge nearly as fast when not in use.

I've given this razor plenty of chances. Today, I'm ordering a second Norelco.

Customer Review: Good what for it is
Summary: 4 Stars

It should be self-evident that the effectiveness of the shaver varies with the skin type and condition of the user. From my own experience, Remington Titanium is the best and most effective. But this Braun looks far more solid and feels better in hand. It is washable, international voltage, comes with a solid case, and can be used as corded shaver (when the battery is out).

But the shaver is all plastic, the rather cheapish kind, especially the part the screen is attached to. The trimmer is a bit sticky as well. Even my much cheaper Braun 1775 feels better built than this. The polished plastic handle looks nice from afar, but upon close examination, the quality isn't typical Braun as I know the brand. Hope it will last well. I am rather amazed by my Braun 1775 ($30) - the battery seems last forever and it works great. So I bought this 5775 as a impuls buy when I saw it at local Target for $56. But I am not so sure about it's life expectancy because the way this shaver was put together.

Based on my experience, the Remington is the loudest and worst looking and awkard to hold and use and the trimmer on it is useless. BUT it is the best shaver for me - as close as Gillette Fusion, seriously! I actually use the Remington 5200 to clean up what the Fusion has missed! But I am a sucker for the look and feel of the Brauns. I used rotary type in the past, but now I am completely convinced by the performance of these linear type shavers.

All in all, I like this one for what it is - not expensive and get the job done and looks cool!

Customer Review: pretty good shaver
Summary: 3 Stars

This is the best shaver I have ever had. It cuts closely and is solidly built, with a nice heft to it. It has a rubberized grip, although not in all the places I'd like, closer to the head end. A washable head is nice, except they warn against "immersion," and you then have to leave your shaver out to dry--a possible inconvenience. The row of power LEDs are only lit for a few seconds, a battery saver. The tilt-head may be a "gimmick," but I use its angle as a visible guide to holding the shaver correctly perpendicular to my skin at every spot. The sideburn, or "long hair," clipper, is nicely wide and stout for a positive placement (unlike the wobbly, narrow one on my former Remington R950 coarse shaver). The 3-370 comes with a hard case containing a brush. The case is great protection for traveling, but hard to open and cannot hold the power cord simultaneously with the shaver itself!

3-month review:
The blades have dulled so this is no longer my best electric shaver ever. I now shave twice over. I see more neck hairs left standing. Time between recharges has dropped from 27 to 20 days. The foil screen doesn't trap all cuttings, dropping "pixie-dust" on a dark shirt. Turning on the trimmer while shaving my cheek sprayed clippings into my eye (the trimmer sits below the leaky foil screen). The handle is not comfortable, and slides down as I push hard to get a closer cut. Cut from 4- to 3-star.

At 13 months I replaced the dull cutter & foil bits.
