Customer Reviews of Braun Series 5 (8985) Men's Shaver

Customer Review: Hands Down best electric shaver I have ever used!!
Summary: 5 Stars

OK - dirty little secret here - I am hirsuit. I have thick hair that tends to be curly and electric shavers have always left me wanting.

About a year ago I finally broke down about bought the Braun 8985 360 complete. This was literally the last shaver I planned to but. I had been through Norelcos, Bruans, Phillips, and other - and always ended up going back to a blade after 2-3 months. Nothing would cut my neck hair and most just burned my neck with all of the repetitive strokes trying to get the neck hair.

I am very happy to report that after a year - I still love this shaver. It isn't perfect - I still have few straggling hairs, but I would not give up this shaver for anything. Especially when used daily, it is a dream - fast and smooth (much better than any blade I have used) and finally . . . NO MORE RAZOR BURN*

* The only time I still get razor burn is when I go more than 2 days without shaving - then it takes about 10 minutes to completely shave and my neck may get a little raw. But using an astringent (like Norelco after shave or Skin Bracer) keep the rash to a minimum and it usually is gone by the next day.

All in all - I feel this is the finest razor (at least for people like me that have to have a clean shave every day, wear collared shirts that rub freshly shaven skin, and have heavy/curly beard hairs).

Customer Review: An excellent shaver from a former blade user
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a tough beard and have tried a number of electric razors over the years without any positive results. I have always needed a good hot shower before shaving with my Gillette (whatever the latest Turbo Mach something or other). I was about to leave on an international trip and I was worried about the availability of that "good hot shower." I decided to give the Braun a try, based on some positive reviews here and on the fact that a "really" close blade-type shave was not a requirement on my trip.

I have to say that I am really delighted. While it does not give the same smooth-to-the-touch shave as a shaving-cream-and razor, it is more than acceptable for day-to-day use, both from an appearance and "feel" standpoint. I travelled abroad for 10 days, used the Braun once or twice a day without recharging, and was very happy with results. I did not take the cleaning unit with me since the liquid in it could not be packed in my luggage, but I used the brush every day to clean the shaving head and the razor performed very well.

Since returning from my trip, I have continued to clean the shaving head daily and I use the full cleaner cycle about twice a week. I can not notice any difference in the quality of the shave after using the full cleaner cycle, and after more than a month of that routine the cleaner still shows a "full" status.

Customer Review: Is this considered good?
Summary: 2 Stars

Okay, let me start out by saying I've never been able to get a good, close shave all over my face with any razor. Apparently, my facial hair is thicker and grows faster than the majority of the rest of the world. That being said, it really irritates me that I can't find a razor that can make me look like I shaved recently. I have a 5 o'clock shadow an hour after I shave. That being said, I'll stick to the issues I have with this razor I didn't have with a blade:
1) It can't manage to shave my neck at all. I have to go over that area with a straight razor after I shave.
2) I now have to use lectric shave pre-shave, which will not come off my face (even after swabbing with alcohol and soap & water). The oil left behind quickly and obviously is absorbed into my collars.
3) The automatic cleaner doesn't register when the cartridge needs changing. It always says full, even after a month and a nearly-empty (and filthy) cartridge.

I was hoping that this would be a good razor, as spending $6/week on some gimmicky blade is something I'm not willing to do and the cheaper blades just don't cut it (literally). I thought a $140 razor would do the trick, but I was wrong. If anybody out there knows of an electric that will actually do what its advertising says, please let me know.

Customer Review: Better Design
Summary: 5 Stars

I once asked my husband why he took so darn long cleaning his razor. He explained to me that every time you shave, you make minor cuts to your skin even though you may not be aware of it. This is why cleaning the razor properly everyday is so important - reduces bacteria buildup. So, when I first saw the Braun Syncro, I bought it for him (mainly also for me so we could get ready faster in the mornings). He loved that thing! Well that is until the arm on the cleaning system broke after 5 years of daily use. So, I had to buy a new one... but which one? I opted for this one because it was on sale and the cleaning system didn't require an arm to operate. He loved this one even more! He said he's never had such a smoother shave in his life. In addition, the cleaning solution (he uses the cleaner every day) lasts much longer. He's had it for a month now & the system still says the cleaning solution is "full". So all in all, though it may be a bit pricey & the cost of the solution can add up, it's a wonderful buy if you want to save time & keep things properly clean. If you're in the market for a new razor & you like this design (vs. the round razor types), I think you should splurge for the Braun 360. I personally can't attest to it, but my husband loves it!

Customer Review: It's not perfect, but close to it
Summary: 5 Stars

I am 26 years old and I have been shaving primarily with Braun since I started shaving. I had Braun (model 6520), which I got for my 18th birthday, and it lasted me almost 8 years. Throughout the 8 years, I changed foil only once. The old model gave me a shave whose closeness was competitive to manual razors.

Finally I decided to get this new model. While it's not perfect, it comes very close to it. It gives a closer shave than my older model, provides a softer feel while shaving and does it faster. It still leaves room for improvement, such as providing a better shave in the neck area, but its performance is still much improved over older models.

I cannot say that I shaved with many good manual razors, like Mach III or others, the ones I did shave with, didn't actually provide a better shave than this electric model. Of course the big plus with electric is that it doesn't cut my skin like razors do. Moreover, it's faster and without any mess.

It should be noted that face should be dry prior to shaving, or else shave will not be nearly as close. All in all, it's a great product in terms of performance, reliability and comfort.
