Bromelain is the name of a group of powerful protein-digesting (proteolytic) enzymes that are found in the pineapple plant and together function as a natural blood thinner and anti-inflammatory. Bromelain is most widely used for reducing muscle and tissue inflammation and for improving circulation by breaking down blood-clotting proteins that can impede blood flow. In an article published by Men's Health, May 2005, author Christopher R. Mohr concludes that these special enzymes may be just as good for relieving pain as aspirin. Medical doctor and best selling author of alternative health subjects, Dr. Andrew Weil, states, "Bromelain is very effective in treating bruises, sprains and strains by reducing swelling, tenderness and pain."
