Customer Reviews of CHI Turbo Microchip Ceramic Hairstyling Iron 1"Customer Review: Jumped on the bandwagon Summary: 4 Stars
I had been letting my hair airdry (i'm black with a relaxer) and using ceramic curling irons to straighten my hair as i curled the ends. I decided to actually use a straightening iron to straighen (what a thought huh? lol) I went for the Chi flat iron. I didn't really appreciate how well it works until I used a cheaper ceramic flat iron one day. It made me realize I had been taking the Chi for granted. It gets my hair extremely straight. I have had the occasional hair snag but not as bad as when i used metal flat irons or even a cheaper ceramic flat iron.
I have yet to master the curling of the ends using the Flat Iron though. Sometimes it comes out okay, and sometimes it doesn't. (I think the 1 inch might be too small for the curl I want.) I wonder if I might have better luck with curling the ends with a larger flat iron, but the trade off would be that I couldn't get as close to my roots.
I don't use it everyday (I limit myself to using heat only one time a week and even then I might use a curling iron) but I'm already seeing a bit of wear on the outside of the iron where I grip it when I put it in my hair. I'm hoping it's just a cosmetic and won't start to burn my hands.
August 09 Update: Four years later, I still have this flat iron and it still works. The only complaint is that the felt on the outside of the iron has pretty much worn off. You can still grip it but it's hot to the touch.
Customer Review: Internet Buyer Beware! Summary: 4 Stars
After reading numerous online raves about the CHI Flat Iron I ordered a CHI Turbo Flat Iron. I have no complaints with the product as of yet, I've only had it a few days.
***BUT*** the few complaints I read online dealt with customer service from Farouk the manufacturer of CHI products and warranty problems. Before buying the product, I went to the Farouk website and noted that they had a 1-year warranty, no problem so I thought. I went back to the site today with a nagging thought, why would people who had spent so much money on a hair iron have problems with customer service? Upon reading the fine print I found out. The following was copied and pasted from the Farouk website:
ATTENTION INTERNET SHOPPERS: Any product manufactured by Farouk Systems, Inc. will lose its warranty if purchased from an internet distributor of any sort. Farouk Systems can not guarantee the quality of the products that are sold over the internet. Besides that, It is against company policy for internet distributors to sell our products. Any CHI appliance or Top Blade products are only under warranty if purchased from a Professional Salon.
BOTTOM LINE: If this product is ordered online by comparison shopping you can potentially save a lot of money but you will NOT have a manufacturer's warranty. The manufacturer's warranty is only valid if you buy through a professional salon.
Customer Review: Full ceramic, straightens, protects, and well worth the money Summary: 5 Stars
Well worth the money. If you are like me and have wild, and wavy hair, then this product is a must. It is a full ceramic,(not a coated ceramic, like many I have tried before), and has protected my hair. I have owned this product for a year and a half, and it is a great investment for me. I also use the "silk infusion" in the summer, to help keep my hair under control in the hot and humid weather (and it works).I bought the "silk infusion" at an Ulta store, and you can also order it online (not sure if amazon sells it). I have tried many other "cheap" staighteners, and have damaged my hair because of them. At first I did not want to drop the money, but after learning the hard way (after three awful, cheap, ceramic coated straighteners that chipped off, and dried out my hair), I splurged on a chi, and it was well worth it.
The chi has lasted longer, worked better, and my hair is healthier than before. You get what you pay for, that is for sure.
I also remove it from my bathroom when taking a shower. The product manual recommends to not expose it to humid conditions.
I also found out about the chi after my hairdresser used it on my hair, and since then I have had no more bad hair days! It is such a relief to not worry about my hair reacting to weather the way that it used to, and to not have dried out hair anymore.
I hope this review helps!
Customer Review: Flawless product! Summary: 5 Stars
I was suspect of the need for "ceramic ions" and "far infrared technology", but this iron was highly recommended by salon personnel, so I decided to dish out the money and try it. You don't need to believe the hype to realize that this is a top quality product. This was a case of "you get what you pay for"! It is lightweight and ergonomic, heats up almost immediately, has a slider bar for varying heat from 176-356F (80-180C), and velvety felt that protects you from burns (also allows me to get closer to my ears and scalp without getting burned). The latter feature is worth the money to me alone, and the the ceramic feels much gentler to my hair (I have baby fine hair very prone to breakage). Two other things to keep in mind when choosing a straightener:
1) size matters - smaller size is better - it's more maneuverable, and doing smaller sections at a time will produce better results. for superfine hair, I recommend the 0.7" (mistakenly advertised as 0.07")
2) not all ceramic is created equal - there are solid ceramic plates or plates COATED with ceramic that are cheaper. the ceramic layer on the coated plates can peel off and is supposedly damaging to your hair (not to mention your product is ruined).
so yes, this iron is more expensive, but hopefully it will last for years of top-notch straightening.
Customer Review: Buyer Beware!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased a 1" Chi Turbo for my daughter less than one year ago - still under warranty. The red felt started to come off and it was burning her fingers. NOTE: She uses this iron only occasionally. I called Farouk, the manufacturer, and left a message for someone to call back with a return authorization approval. After three weeks passed, I called again and was told to return it with a check for $15. When I asked why the $15, I was told that it was to cover return shipping. There is no mention of return shipping charges in the warranty. I questioned the rep and she stated that this was Farouk's policy. The estimated time to repair was 3 to 5 weeks!! For giggles, I checked the UPS rate to ship this item back and it was under $5. So, as this item probably costs about $10 to manufacture, it looks like the purchaser winds up paying for both the return shipping as well as the cost of the item. NICE way to treat someone who spent $120 on your product! If I treated my customers this way, I would be out of business in short order. When new, this item worked extremely well. I will never purchase from this manufacturer again and you can bet that my daughter will tell all of her friends at school, etc. that this manufacturer does not stand behind its products.
