Customer Reviews of Charlie's Soap Powder - 2.64 lb (80 Loads)

Customer Review: Worth it!
Summary: 4 Stars

I ordered this soap to use with my cloth diapers and enjoy the way my clothes and linens come out softer. Before I used charlies soap on my expensive cloth diapers, I decided to give it the "ultimate" test. I have to wear the same 4 dark-colored work t-shirts 5 days per week, and after two and a half years worth of uses, many were getting permanent white deodorant stains that did not come out with Tide. They also smelled like deodorant no matter how many times I had washed them in the Tide. Needless to say, I was excited to see what Charlies could do for my work shirts. To my surprise, the deodorant stains were completely gone and my shirts were no longer stiff and gross feeling. However, a faint deodorant smell still remained around the armpits, but again, Tide didn't do any better with that one. None of my clothing has been heavily stained enough to test this soap with fresh stains, but all the minor spots and messes did come out. As far as old stains, I wouldn't expect Charlies to perform any miracles. I tested the soap on some old, stained baby changing table liners, and the stains remained.

All in all, the soap is all natural, from a family owned company, good for your (and your little one's) skin, safe for the environment, and leaves clothing and sheets super soft and great smelling. For me, it was just as good as -if not better than- Tide, but is much cheaper. I can't give it 5 stars, because I wish it could remove perfumes and scents from clothing, but with all Charlies' benefits, you can't expect it to do everything. I plan to continue using this soap, even after we're finished diapering.

Customer Review: Love Charlie's Soap
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using Charlie's Soap for about 6 weeks in my new front load steam washer. I only have to use a teaspoon, or two depending on the size of the load, but the cloths come out clean and fresh, not "perfumey" just clean. It not only doesn't leave a residue in fabrics, but actually removes the built up residues left by my old regular sudsy laundry detergent. I can tell this because some old items that used to be dingy actually seem to be cleaner each time they are washed. One item in particular (which was at least 4 years old) after several washings with the Charlie's looked almost like new. I couldn't believe it.

What can I say. You only use a little. It gets things clean. Leaves no perfumes, or residues. Removes old residues left by other detergents. And oh yes... stinky washer syndrome. If you have a front loader you'll want to use Charlie's Soap because it leaves no residue in the washer for bacteria to lunch on and create the moldy smell problem many people have with the front loaders. I started to get a little odor in the machine after a couple weeks, even though I was using a high quality HE detergent from the grocery store. I had read about stinky washer syndrome and that some people swear by Charlie's Soap, so I ordered it. I have had no smell in the washer since switching to Charlie's. I also leave the door open so the washer can dry out.

I don't believe I will ever go back to my old laundry detergent. Highly recommend it and if you have a front loader, it is a must have.

Customer Review: NOT CLEAN RINSING!!!! BEWARE!
Summary: 1 Stars

OK - so after all the reviews I thought this was some miracle product. I was just about to begin cloth diapering AND I had been battling underarm t-shirt odor problems in my husband's t's that I couldn't get clean.....so after reading so many great reviews I was excited to try it out! THANKFULLY I was told by an experienced cloth diapering mother to NOT use Charlie's - that it is NOT clean rinsing and causes a lot of residue buildup and the problems that result from that (rashes, stinkies, etc.). I had already begun using Charlie's to wash our other laundry but was not going to use that for CD's....well, then I started actually watching my wash and rinse cycles to see what was happening....the Charlie's DOES NOT RINSE! I have stopped using Charlie's and use a CD safe detergent for everything now...but all the loads I had washed in Charlie's a few times are STILL sudsing up quite a bit in the wash cycle and are still not clean rinsing.....I am rinsing those items about 4 times after each wash and hoping soon that the Charlie's will all be rinsed out. And yes - I used just one tablespoon (scoop) as recommended on the Charlie's bag and my laundry loads were LARGE. I am SO grateful to that mother for telling me to not use Charlie's on diapers....I can't imagine the issues I'd be dealing with now if I had created all that residue buildup in those! I wouldn't recommend this detergent especially if you are cloth diapering and/or have any members of your family with sensitive skin where detergent buildup will cause a problem for them....

Customer Review: Blew my expectations away!
Summary: 5 Stars

First, let me say that this soap blew all my expectations out of the water! I originally wanted to purchase it for baby diapers and wipes for stain removal/safe cleaning, but the little one had not yet come when I ordered this product.

My first trial after the "toxic residue of other products" removal pre-treatment that is recommended was on dog bedding. Not overly stinky bedding, but doggy-smelling just the same. I read other reviews where people commented on using less-than-the-reccommended amount, so I tried half a scoop. When I retrieved the clothing from the washer, I noticed something very strange. Nearly ALL the dog hair that had adhered to the bedding was stuck to the sides of the washer, in clumps. This has never happened to me before. It would also be irritating, BUT it actually made it really easy to remove the hair before the bedding went into the dryer. I had also experimented in the past with not using dryer sheets, but found myself pulling dog-hair covered bedding out of the dryer. So, you really don't have to use dryer sheets with this soap. I ended up with clean smelling, hair free bedding. What more could you ask for?

So, minus the 2 pre-treatment scoops the soap calls for, I think I can almost halfen the usage amount to make about 150 loads, which equals about 8 cents of soap per load. For clean smelling, soft clothes WITHOUT harsh chemicals or residues, this is GREAT! And who needs flowery-smelling clothing? Like the bag says, "If you want flowers, go pick some".

Customer Review: The best soap ever, but the new packaging not so much.
Summary: 5 Stars

When my daughter decided while she was pregnant to "go native" and use only cloth diapers on her baby, we began researching for the best soap to wash them in. After many cloth diapering websites and reviews we decided on Charlie's. I ordered 3 for each of us (I watch the baby while she works) from Amazon, with wonderful service and shipping, as always. These first ones arrived in the original little cloth bag. We were impressed that a company was using a recyclable alternative to plastic.
The diapers we have are Lil Scoobs all in ones, made at home, found on E-bay and about 1/3 the price of brand names. We pre-washed them all and the Charlie's softened them up nicely. Since the baby, the Charlie's has done a wonderful job! We also use Kushie's liners, so poop clean up is super easy. We just throw away the liner (they are flushable, but we don't), rinse and put the diaper in a dry pail. We wash every other day, with just one little scoop of soap and the diapers come out so clean and fresh! No stains, odors or build-up. We really love it! We've also started washing our husbands work clothes in it and they are cleaner then ever.
The only downside is that Charlie's has replaced the cloth packaging with plastic. When my daughter received more Charlie's from her Amazon baby registry it arrived in a plastic jar. Reusable, but not recyclable in our area. A bit disappointing, but the soap itself is unchanged and the price is great, so we will continue to use and recommend it.
