Most people know about Chia Pets, but not many people know that the seeds are a rich source of nutrition. It is a very ancient food with a long history of human consumption, dating back possibly 2000 years or more. It was prized by the Aztecs, for example, and is still used today in Mexico and parts of Central America. Along with Amaranth Grain and quinoa, chia is an ancient super-food, but it isn't very well known outside of health food circles or foodies.
I only recently learned that chia (Salvia hispanica, a member of the mint family) is good to eat and full of nutrition, not just for growing on novelty clay heads. It is packed with potassium, manganese, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber. Just 1 tablespoon of the seeds yields 5.6 grams of fiber (5.1 of which is insoluble). This is the equivalent to 10 capsules of Metamucil Capsules - 300 Caps - Fiber Therapy for Regularity/Fiber Supplement and is much cheaper pound for pound. Health experts recommend 35-50g for an adult per day.
The seeds don't have any detectable flavor on their own, so they can be incorporated into a recipe or daily routine with ease if you are going for the health benefits. Dry, they can be used as a topping, sprinkled over any food that you might sprinkle sesame or poppy seeds over. Wet, they get gelatinous and sticky after soaking in a liquid, making for a very interesting slippery, crunchy texture, exactly like Thai Basil Seed Drink 11.8 Oz - 350 ml Cans, a favorite drink of mine. Now I can make my own natural and healthy drink at any time.
Price-wise, this is the best value I could find. 5 pounds is a LOT of seeds and it's a great price. Fulfillment by Amazon is fast as usual. As for the packaging itself, I had the same problem as everybody else. The bag ruptured during shipment, creating a small hole near the top where seeds spilled out into the box. The kind of plastic used for the bag is thick, but apparently very easy to tear. It should probably be double-bagged. Fortunately, UPS didn't just chuck the box in front of my door, otherwise, tiny seeds would've been all over my front steps.
5 stars for a stellar product. 2 stars for the packaging. I will order again despite the bagging problem. The box kept all the seeds contained and I could just spoon them back up.
