Customer Reviews of Chillow ® Comfort DeviceCustomer Review: A great product with some room for improvement Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this for my husband because my body heat tends to make him too hot at night. I would definitely buy this product again, but hopefully they will continue to improve on it.
Pros:
- It is wonderfully cool in the beginning, almost too cool if your pillow case isn't thick enough. You can use it under your head or neck, between your thighs, etc. - wherever you feel the warmest. Or save it for the middle of the night when you wake up hot.
- By the time it starts to lose it's coolness, most likely you'll have already fallen asleep. Not everyone uses it while sleeping. It would be great for sunburns.
- No refrigeration or batteries required, you can just keep it beside your bed or in your pillow case ready to go.
- Soft foam insert is comfortable to lay on.
Cons:
- It does lose it's coolness after some time, warming to your body temperature, but it's still more effective than an ice pack, cool wash cloth, fan, etc. To re-cool just keep it away from your body for a few hours.
- It's heavy. You have to pour water into it to soak the foam insert in order to activate the cooling feature (a one-time activity). Not such a big deal though because you usually leave it in one place and just lay on it.
- After a few nights of sleeping on it, the foam insert can start to bunch up inside the Chillow and it's hard to lay it flat again because there is just a quarter-sized opening to it. I end up having to manipulate it from the outside to get it flat again. This probably also depends on how much you toss and turn when you sleep though.
In spite of the cons, my husband has used the Chillow every night since I gave it to him and has had a much easier time falling asleep. Given the price, I'd still recommend it because I think the pros outweigh the cons and I haven't found anything as effective.
Customer Review: Great, but a few downsides Summary: 4 Stars
I love this thing! I get really hot when I sleep, and my partner likes sleeping with a comforter even in the summer. whee.
The Chillow is freezing cold when you lay down, and it just sucks the heat right out of you. It's great! I fall asleep much more easily, and sleep sounder when I use it (my partner tells me she wakes up to me thrashing far less often).
I only had to press the air out of mine once even though they say to do it weekly. I've had it for 6 months now and it's still going strong, no air bubbles. Maybe I got a super good sealing one?
It's probably not for everyone, but if you're always hot when you sleep and hang a leg out the side of the sheets to help you cool off, try one of these. I'd been eyeing them up, thinking it sounded like a good idea but was wary of buying one. I got mine as a gift, and now having used it I'd replace it immediately if it were to break.
Downsides:
- It does deform as mentioned by other commentors. It's really not a big deal though, it's easy to reshape again.
- Warms up by morning. Not a problem for me though, I should be getting out of bed by then anyway!
- Heavy and not as comfy as a plain pillow. Just the nature of the beast.
- Scent. Mine has started to smell kind of like a vinyl pool liner. Partner's very sensitive to smell, and it's bugging the heck out of her. Have tried febreze and a few other products, but the odor always comes back in a few nights. Not sure what to do about this... any suggestions are quite welcome. (azon at cybertrash dot net)
Summary:
I love it, I fall asleep faster, I sleep more soundly. The minor downsides are piddling complaints compared to a good night's sleep.
Customer Review: After 1 night use... Summary: 4 Stars
I like it, but it will take some getting used to.
I bought this because my head gets too hot at night, especially in the summer. I was surprised to receive just a small package, just the chillow. I thought it would be a whole pillow, but it's just a thin water-filled device that slides into your pillowcase.
The filling up and getting air out process is a bit cumbersome, but not too bad. I was hoping for something I could just lay down on out of the box to try out.
Sleeping on it takes a little getting used to. It makes my pillow really heavy, and hard to move around. Sometimes I lay on my side and hug the pillow between my arms... with a chillow it's just too heavy to do this.
When I lay on it with the side of my head, I can hear all the stuff quietly shifting around inside... a little creepy. Every time I move my head a little I can hear it reshifting.
It may just be my preference, but I found it a little too cool for the side of my face, but just right for the back of my head.
I slept soundly through the night. But woke up a little chilly. It was nice and warm where my head was, and very cold inches away. I read other people's reviews stating this, but was a little surprised to see it for myself. Definitely nice to choose warm or cold depending on how I feel in the middle of the night or morning.
It seems overpriced... maybe $10-$15 would be a more reasonable price (or ebay it).
Overall I will probably buy a replacement when it pops. But it does take some getting used to. I can't wait for next summer and it's nights that are too hot to sleep.
Customer Review: How did I live without this? Summary: 5 Stars
I ADORE the Chillow. I'm pregnant and constantly hot at night... I got this in my 8th month but I wish I'd gotten it sooner! To the reviewer who put it in the freezer, the directions very clearly say NOT to do this, as it damages the integrity of the product. Now, there are a few drawbacks to the Chillow that are worth mentioning:
1) The exact spot you're sleeping on "loses its cool" after about an hour, but that gives you plenty of time to fall asleep. If you wake up in the middle of the night, just move your head over a few inches into a cool spot, no problem. By morning the whole thing is room temperature, but that doesn't really matter -- it's cold again at night when you need it to be.
2) I use mine inside the pillowcase and the thing weighs a TON! Normally I flip my pillow around a lot at night and this would be almost impossible with the Chillow inside, but since the Chillow makes the pillow so nice and comfy and cool, I don't need to flip my pillow any more. Moot point.
3) I found the "set up" of the Chillow a bit of a drag. I thought I would open the box, put it in my pillowcase and be ready to go, but the process of filling it and getting the air out to create a vacuum is a bit laborious. The directions also say you may have to do it every few weeks. It's still a small price to pay in my opinion.
Having said all that, I would still buy this product again in an instant. (And it may become my new gift to all pregnant women!) In fact, even if it broke tomorrow I'd still buy another one. My nights have become SO much more restful, and that's priceless!
Customer Review: Maybe not the best idea to use in winter Summary: 4 Stars
I was so excited to hear about this product, I'm a very picky sleeper. I have to sleep a certain way with certain pillows, etc. I love having a cool pillow so I thought this product would be great for me.
After the tedious process of getting all the air bubbles out, I let it sit for a few hours and then tried it out. I was very surprised just how cool the pillow was, I wasn't expecting anything so chilly. I was very excited to try it out. I first noticed the latexy smell, which I wasn't a fan of. It was brand new, so I just ignored it. Keep in mind that this is the dead of winter here, so I think I probably should have not used it, even though I do get warm at night.
After the second night (I hadn't noticed any improvement with my restless sleep), I woke up and had a terrible sore throat, which then developed into a fever. I was sick as a dog for 3 or 4 days and I couldn't help but wonder if the chillow had some hand in that. I'm a fairly healthy person, I'm usually only sick once a year, and usually not nearly that bad. I suppose it could be coincidence that I got sick right after using the Chillow, but I think the cold pillow maybe mixed with the latexy scent might have not agreed with my throat and sent it for a loop.
Anyway, the product definitely says it will do. I have noticed that I did have to adjust the pillow after a few hours of sleep because I heated up where my head was, but that's to be expected. I haven't been using the chillow though I think I'll give it another shot when the weather warms up a bit.
