Customer Reviews of Chillow ® Comfort DeviceCustomer Review: Love it Summary: 5 Stars
I absolutely love my chillow. I am replacing mine after about 3 years of frequent use. (The only reason I need to replace it now is because my dog punctured it.) I keep my chillow in the refrigerator. I do sometimes put it in the freezer (I know you are not supposed to), but I try to make sure I take it out before it becomes frozen.
I sleep with the soft, reusable type ice packs every night. Using the chillow, also, helps keep the ice packs cold throughout the entire night. My chillow has really helped with the migraines I get frequently. I don't think I would be able to sleep at night if I did not have my ice packs or chillow. I recently visited family, and they do not have central a/c -- just a couple window units. The room I slept in was pretty warm. I remembered to bring my chillow with me and it really paid off.
Thankfully, I will be able to receive mine from Amazon quickly with 2 day shipping, so I won't be without it for very long.
I also get Canine Coolers (same concept) for my dog. I had a dog in the past with an illness that caused her to be hot. I tried the Canine Cooler out of desperation, and it really worked. My current dog loves it, too. They are bigger than the Chillow but have a stronger exterior. I put a pillow case (made a "pillow case" out of a flat sheet for the medium size one), because the canine cooler does not have the soft side like the Chillow does.
My dog and I are definitely Chillow fans!!!
Customer Review: very disappointed... Summary: 1 Stars
I really looked forward to this product and had high hopes for it. My husband gets very hot at night and I thought this was the answer for him... I even decided to purchase one for myself as I had heard such good things about it.
We used them for about a month - First we tried them inside the pillow case - that was useless - you cannot even feel any coolness unless it is ON TOP of your pillow. Also, it never really got cold - I had slightly better success by placing mine in the freezer for 20 minutes (my husband never put his in the freezer...) before I went to bed, however, when we awoke in the morning, the chillo was hot and so were we. (Also, having to remember to place your chillo in the freezer every night is a real drag!)
Additionally, after about a month, my husband woke up around 1am drenched in water! It seems that the plug came undone and all the water came out! We let the chillo (and the bed) dry and then put water back in it according to the instructions. Aparently, there is some kind of chemical or something in the chillo, because refilling it was to no avail. We could not get it to work at all after that and it looked like a plastic bag filled with water (it never flattened out and "absorbed" the water again... and the instructions do not talk at all about refilling it...)
I'm sorry I wasted my money on this product and would not recommend it to anyone...
Customer Review: Just Not For Me Summary: 2 Stars
While I love the concept of this product, it just didn't work well for me. The instructions are rather detailed and you have to follow them carefully. I did that and didn't notice much coolness. I did put the pillow in the refrigerator as instructed and was in heaven for all of about 2 minutes. I think it's just that I'm an incredibly warm person and I'm not sure that anything less than a bag of ice is going to cool me off when I'm sleeping. The worst part is I'm not even near menopause yet...that's going to be even more fun!
I did read the reviews before I purchased this product and even though there were good and bad, I decided to try it. I will be returning it. I think this is just one of those products that you can't make a judgment based on what others say because everyone is different. As I said, I'm warm pretty much all the time. I tried the Chillow when it was 80 at night and I have no air conditioning, only fans. Of course it's too warm, so I waited till the weather cooled before making a decision. It didn't seem to matter, I would awake in the middle of the night with my hair soaking wet from the Chillow either retaining the heat or not releasing it properly. It could well be that I didn't follow the instructions carefully enough. Either way, I'm thinking this just isn't the miracle that I was hoping to find. Wish you all luck though! Stay cool ;-)
Customer Review: Living With a Chillow Summary: 4 Stars
Roasting your head in bed? I've used the standard Chillow product consistently for the past several years, and I have found that I'm addicted to it. I should say them, because you need one to use and one to back-up when the initial one starts to leak. What happens? The plastic seams start to crack under normal use after 6 to 9 months or so, and then you have a leaky scenario with your underlying pillow. Is this a reason to avoid the product? Nope.
The leaks must be anticipated--it's part of ordinary use. Could they be made not to leak? Perhaps, but then the plastic might be too thick to be a conductor for the evaporative cooling effect. The Chillow works well enough to be worth it---get over it and plan accordingly. If you anticipate going through one or two a year, it's part of the cost of comfortable sleep.
I've tried other products, such as the little cloth bags with styrofoam-like pellets that suck up water. Forget it--you get a wet-head--not good. Most regular pillows trap heat because they're made out of that damned polyester fill--no doubt invented by the Marquis de Sade. A true goose feather pillow is pretty good, but hard to find, very expensive, and not quite as effective as a Chillow. The Chillow is still the best solution I've found.
Customer Review: Read the instructions Summary: 5 Stars
I bought my Chillow about 3 years ago and am very pleased with it. First off, read the complete instructions that come with it and read other user's ideas for use. If water is sloshing or pooling in one spot, too much water. Cool when you first use it, then heats up throughout the night? That's because it absorbs your body heat and it will continue to absorb that heat throughout the night, keeping you more comfortable than you would be without it.
I put the Chillow on my pillow and slip the pillowcase over both. Each morning I take it out and gently shake, push and pull it back into shape. It's worth the effort.
The first summer I used it, it didn't cool. Then I remembered that it picks up the temperature of the room it's in. I keep my bedroom very cool day and night during the winter. In the summer - 20-30 minutes before bedtime, I put it in the refrigerator. Take it out, insert in pillowcase on top of pillow and I'm fast asleep.
The instructions also recommend opening it monthly and smoothing it out again as you did when first purchased. I find most products work better if instructions are followed, exactly.
Again, I'm very pleased with my Chillow and recommend it to everyone
