Customer Review: A great idea, poor execution

First I will say that this appears to be the only device of its type around. It does do what it says, kind of. You pour water into this thing that is basically a vinyl sack with a polyester back (to keep it from sliding in your pillowcase) and then try to squeeze out all the air...which usually leaves it wet. Once past that, though, it seems pretty good until the foam bunches to one side in the vinyl sack. Also, I notice in the morning that the thing gets so warm it is warmer than a pillow would get. I think my head actually heats up all that water inside. If you use a thick pillowcase, the thing doesn't evaporate heat efficiently.
Furthermore, if you don't keep it very level, the water inside will pool in a corner or a side.
Finally, the vinyl kind of makes a seal on your ear even through a pillow case...which is annoying because it magnifies vibration sounds from your fan, washing machine, whatever.
I've had this for over a month now. I really tried to like it and use it every day. It is a great idea, but because of the materials it is made out of and the fact that they were too lazy\cheap to glue the foam to one of the sides inside it just isn't good.
Would not buy again.

I purchased the Chillow about a month ago. I had been looking for something besides an ice pack or a cool,damp face cloth to use for the occasional "night sweats". It is an easy first time set-up and I used it that very night. Ahhh, it felt great on my face and chest area. Instant relief! I tend to "internally combust" a few times a month. There is nothing worse then having to run down to the fridge and stand in front of an open freezer door at 2am.
The plastic smell is very mild and does not bother me as others have reported. I use just a regular pillowcase and that seems to work well. If it does gets crinkled, you can release the valve and adjust the insert. Not a big deal.
With the summer months ahead, I see using the Chillow more often. My husband loves the heat and if he had his way-the AC would never go on. Me, I like a cool and crisp environment when I go off to sleep.
The only reason I did not give the Chillow 5 stars is that it will not last the entire night. I do have a chair by the bed and simply place it on the seat for awhile. It does get cool again quick for reuse if you need it.

Got my Chillow a few months ago and wish I had not waited so long! It is great! My own personal "thermostat" having gone haywire years ago, I have wished for something to help me sleep and be cool. This is it! First, it allows my husband to cuddle up next to me without my pushing him away cause he's so darn warm and I just can't take the extra heat. Second, I have wished for a firm pillow forever!! and have tried many different pillows and a great side benefit of the Chillow is that it makes my pillow really firm. It can be a bit too cold for a minute or two, but it evens out before long. For those of you who have that problem, you might consider doing what I did. I purchased a "Bedsack" quilted & zippered pillow cover. Put the pillow + the Chillow in that and then in a pillowcase and it's just perfect. Might also help the vinyl scent that some of you complain about. I will agree that the Chillow makes my pillow very heavy, but that is my only complaint. And I'm not carrying it around so the weight is really not an issue. Other than that, I wish I had purchased one of these Chillows long ago. I bought this product because I have hot flashes, especially at night. I sweat facially and my pillow becomes damp and hot. This means I can't sleep. But when I use the chillow I am guaranteed a good night's sleep. (I do recommend putting it in the fridge for 30 min prior to use.) It stays quite cool for up to an hour of staying in the same spot. If I wake up with a hot flash I simply move my head to a new spot and it is cool. After about 10 hours of use it is still cooler than the room but not chilly.
I also have frequent nausea and the chillow helps with that as well. By placing it under the back of my neck it cools my overall body temp quickly thereby reducing the nauseous feeling.
The only thing that I can say negative about it is that it is heavy. But it isn't much of a negative.
I haven't had any problems with the interior foam bunching up at all. I simply fold it into quarters and store it that way. I have had it for 2 months now and I use it every night - and often during the day as well.
I think this product is a must for anyone who over-heats or has hot flashes.

This has been a miserable, hot summer, and I haven't been sleeping well. I heard about the chillow and decided to try it. Setting it up was messier than I expected, but all I spilled was water, so no biggy. I would suggest putting in more water than they recommend, however, because so much will spill out when you get rid of the "bubble."
Anyway, I've been sleeping with it for a couple of months now, and it does help. I don't use a pillow, so I put my face directly on the pillowcased chillow. If I have trouble going to sleep, I have to move either my face or the chillow a few times, because once a section warms up, it really warms up. But since the rest stays cool, there's always a spot somewhere that's nice and cool. Also, I've found that the parts that have warmed up will cool down during the night in case I need to cool my face some more in the wee hours. On really hot nights it can help to put it in the fridge for a few minutes before bed. Only real problem is finding a place to let it "recharge" during the day because one of my cats likes to lie on it and suck all the coolness out. <g>
