I am 23 and have been actively running for about 8 years now, including several half-marathons / marathons. A couple years back, I noticed a pain begin to develop during one my runs; it was a sharp, abrupt pain on the outside of right knee every time I extended my leg, just below the kneecap. I looked it up and in horror realized I had ITBS, or an aggravation of the ilio-tibial band which runs on the outside of the leg from the thigh to the knee. Presumably a problem in my gait caused there to be too much pressure on the ITB; however, because the area of stress was at the knee, it was virtually impossible to stretch.
I got the Cho-pat strap to serve as a stabilizer, and it worked wonders! As other writers noted, it helps firm up the knee and alleviate the stress on the ITB. I still had to be careful on longer runs, but on shorter 8 mile and under runs I had virtually no problems with the strap on. The dual strap is also great, making it easy to adjust given your individualized leg thickness below and above the knee. Just make sure you get the right size, and you can make it snug without it ever snapping off.

Dual Action Knee Strap Cho-Pat's newly patented Dual Action Knee Strap provides an extra dimension of relief for painful and weakened knees. The strap applies pressure upon the patellar tendon below the kneecap to stabilize and tighten up the kneecap mechanism, which improves patellar tracking and elevation and reduces patellar subluxation. It adds further strengthening to the kneecap mechanism by applying pressure on the tendon above the kneecap as well. This tends to reduce the forces of the quadriceps on the patella tendon and erosion of the undersurface of the kneecap due to a possible misalignment of the quadriceps (Q angle). The device's design and construction apply constant dynamic forces to the surrounding areas of the knee reducing the likelihood of overuse syndromes.
