Customer Reviews of Clairol Natural Instincts Loving Care Color, 745 Medium Reddish Brown (Pack of 3)Customer Review: Good 1st-time product for scaredy cats, but doesn't last long for brunettes Summary: 3 Stars
First, let me lay some background...
I had never dyed my hair before and didn't want to:
1. Try any permanent product
2. Try any semi-permanent product that was going to show root grow-out (I have dry hair and can only wash it on average twice a week).
3. Try any product that was going to change the base color of my hair since I like my brunette with natural red and golden highlights.
I wanted a temporary product that:
1. I could experiment with and would wash out within a reasonable amount of time if I didn't like it.
2. Would wash out before root grow out.
3. Would cover my small amount of gray without changing my natural hair color or covering my natural highlights...one of my worst fears was a flat monotone color.
4. Would add more reddish highlights to my hair.
To Clairol's exoneration, they do not recommend this product for my medium dark brunette color, but I wanted to try it anyway because I hoped that the medium reddish brown shade (slightly lighter in tone than my natural hair) would not cover my natural color, but would only cover my grays, giving them a hint of red, as well as adding some red highlights.
Pros:
-- The temporary nature of this product and its claim that it wouldn't change my base color took the nervousness out of dying my hair for the first time.
-- Considering that it wasn't recommended for my natural brunette color, it did a reasonable job at doing mostly what I wanted it to: it did not change my natural base color, and it did mostly cover the gray.
-- The end color of the grays did look like highlights, and blended nicely into my natural hair color.
-- The process wasn't very difficult to do (although it did take over an hour).
-- If you don't like it or want to try another color, it washes out quickly (you could accelerate this process with repeated consecutive washes).
-- The max recommended time for leaving this product in your hair is 45 minutes. I accidentally left it in for over an hour, and was concerned; however, the color result was probably better for me, and it didn't seem to damage my hair (however, I would not advise doing this without first consulting Clairol).
-- I was concerned that because this product washes out quickly that it would rub off on my clothes or sheets and stain them, but it didn't.
Cons:
-- The normal average time for leaving the dye in your hair is supposed to be 20 minutes, but that would not have worked for my hair...I had to leave it in for the maximum time...the entire process with shampooing took around an hour and a half.
-- The gray was covered, but not as much as I wanted it to be...I wish the end result was darker.
-- Although there was a hint of red highlight to the end result, my grays (which are silvery white) turned as much golden as reddish, and because of their original silvery nature, individual strands shone a somewhat brassy color within my brunette hair, but it was not unpleasing or too unnatural looking, and definitely better than the gray strands.
-- Although this was not difficult to do, it is not convenient. It requires advanced planning and preparation, and is not quick. It is not something I want to do every two to three weeks.
-- Ironically, my fears of dye lasting too long were counteracted by this product not lasting long enough. After a couple of weeks and 4-5 washes, some of the grays are already back to their old self.
-- This product continues to fade even without washings.
In summary: Good product for apprehensive first-time hair dyer, but for brunettes the result is not quite enough color (in my opinion), and it doesn't last long enough for me. If you want to keep dying your hair, I would find the process inconvenient to have to keep repeating frequently. (Although many people who use products such as henna redye their hair every couple of weeks, that frequency is just not for me.) After using this product once to get over my fear of dying, I think I'm ready to move on to a semi-permanent product for more longevity...yes, it's a scary step to move up to "big-girl" dye, but now I think I'll survive it. ;)
Recommendations if you are dying your hair for the first time:
-- Plan this days in advance since you have to do an allergy skin test first, as well as a hair strand test, and you also have to wash all product (including conditioner) out of your hair and wait 12-24 hours before dying.
-- Put on an old dark colored shirt that won't show stains. Wear it inside out, and be sure to have a large neck hole because you have to take it off over wet, dye-soaked hair.
-- Lay out all your supplies before beginning, especially damp paper towels to wipe your face (somehow this ended up all over my face).
-- There will be some spray or drips especially if you are new at this. Clear the area where you plan to dye your hair (I did it at a sink vanity in front of the mirror, which I recommend). Do not get this product on white sink calk or grout...it could stain.
-- Use tight fitting latex gloves rather than the disposible plastic gloves supplied.
-- Use a plastic shower cap with an elastic band instead of the plastic bag supplied...it is a pain to keep your long hair in it and secure it.
-- A lot of product sticks in the bottle at the end. By adding a little water to the "empty" bottle and shaking it, you can get a lot more product out. I was able to do this four times with the same bottle, and greatly expanded the amount of product I was able to use. Note: a LITTLE water at a time so as not to dilute it too much.
-- Use an old towel for your hair after washing the dye out.

What products does Clairol make?Clairol makes haircolor products. Choose from Semi-Permanent (lasts through 8-12 shampoos), Demi-Permanent (lasts through 28 shampoos), Permanent (lasts until your hair grows out or you recolor) or Highlighting & Blonding to help you become colorwonderful™. Should individuals with natural, uncolored hair use different haircolor products than those who have previously colored their hair?It depends on the desired result. If you are coloring your hair for the first time and only want to enhance your natural color, try a Demi-Permanent (lasts through 28 shampoos) product close to your natural haircolor. If you want to go lighter, you need to select a Permanent (lasts until your hair grows out or you recolor) haircolor, then refer to the insert that comes inside your box of Clairol haircolor and follow the instructions for first time application. Should people who want to cover gray hair use different coloring products than those who don't need coverage? Most Clairol haircolor products will blend or cover gray hair to some degree. If you have a small percentage of gray (not very visible), use a Semi-Permanent (lasts through 8-12 shampoos) product, such as Loving Care. If you have a higher percentage of gray hair (up to 50%), use a Demi-Permanent (lasts through 28 shampoos) product such as Natural Instincts, which will blend away gray hair. On the other hand, if you have a lot of gray and want to cover it completely, use a Permanent (lasts until your hair grows out or you recolor) product. If you have 50% or more gray, use Nice 'n Easy Gray Solution. How can I test-run a color before committing to coloring my entire head of hair?Strand test is a simple method for you to test haircolor on a portion of your hair before doing the entire application. (The instructions are in your haircolor box.) It's an important step because it's the only way to see exactly how the shade you selected works with your starting haircolor to achieve the resulting color. A strand test will also help you determine the exact timing you'll need to color your whole head. Where can I find product instructions?Product instruction inserts are inside your haircolor box. GET READY TO COLOR- Use an old towel to protect your clothing and household surfaces.
- Have a clock handy for timing.
- Wear the plastic gloves provided for preparation and application of color.
- Apply to dry hair that is free of styling product build-up. If hair has styling product build-up, shampoo 12-24 hours prior to coloring. DO NOT shampoo immediately before coloring. Your scalp has natural oils that help protect it during coloring.
ALLERGY TEST - 48 HOURS BEFORE YOU COLORJust as some people are allergic to foods and medicines, a small number of people may show an allergic reaction to hair colorants. So to help minimize your risk, it is important to perform the skin allergy test 48 hours prior to every application. Don't color if you've had a previous reaction. You will need a cotton ball or swab. - Put on gloves. Shake bottle. Twist the applicator tip to open the bottle.
- Apply small amount of the mixture to inside of elbow.
- Leave inside of elbow uncovered and undisturbed for 48 hours.
- Examine the test area during the next 48 hours. If no reaction occurs, you are ready to color.
If a rash or redness, burning or itching occurs you may be allergic and you must not use this product. If during coloring you experience intense stinging or burning and/or a rash, rinse immediately. Do not color your hair again before consulting a doctor or seeking medical advice. If you experience shortness of breath, seek prompt medical attention. STRAND TEST - 48 HOURS AFTER ALLERGY TEST AND BEFORE YOU COLORDo the Strand Test each time you color to determine optimal timing and color results. Perms, relaxers, previous color, and the sun can affect your results and timing. You will need: scissors, tape, plastic bowl and a clock. - Cut a 1/4 inch wide strand from the darkest or grayest part of your dry hair close to the scalp and tape at the cut end.
- Place strand in bowl. Shake bottle. Put on gloves. Twist the applicator tip to open bottle and point downwards away from face and squeeze out enough haircolor into the bowl to cover the strand.
- Start timing. After 15 minutes (10 minutes for permed/relaxed hair), wipe the haircolor from the strand with a paper towel to check the strand. If the strand is not the color you want, return it to the mixture and check the color every few minutes for up to 20 minutes (up to 45 minutes for resistant grays).
Fill in your personal color time below: My timing for desired color: _______ minutes.SPECIAL CAUTIONS- Never use product on eyebrows or eyelashes. This could cause eye irritation. If any product gets into the eye, flush immediately with a large amount of water. If irritation occurs, consult a physician or seek medical advice.
- We recommend removing contact lenses before applying haircolor. If you must wear contact lenses during application and any product gets into your eye, remove the lens first, then flush immediately with a large amount of water. If irritation occurs, consult a physician or seek medical advice.
- Never use on facial hair or if your scalp is irritated or injured.
- Do not mix with any other product.
- Product not intended to be used on children.
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.USEFUL TIPS BEFORE YOU STARTLoving Care is formulated to provide gentle gray coverage that does not change natural hair color or leave a root line. It contains no ammonia or peroxide. Loving Care leaves colored hair soft with a brilliant shine. - Apply to hair that is free of styling product build-up, however, do not shampoo immediately before coloring.
- If you have resistant grays:
- Try applying Loving Care to the gray area first, then to the rest of your hair.
- Remember to use all the Loving Care and really saturate your hair.
- Be sure to use the Color Enhancing Cap provided.
- For longer lasting gray coverage, try Natural Instincts from Clairol.
- If your hair has recently been permed or relaxed, wait at least 7 days and 1 shampoo before coloring. Be sure to do the Strand Test, since your timing may need to be reduced.
- If you plan to perm or chemically relax your hair, wait at least 7 days and one shampoo before coloring.
- If you've used a gradual color restorer, henna or metallic dyes, don't use Loving Care until your hair has grown out and the colored areas have been cut off.
- If hair is highlighted or lightened, highly lightened from the sun, or if a haircolor remover has been used, DO NOT USE Loving Care, as it may produce off-tone or unwanted results.
- If you are deciding between two similar shades, choose the lighter shade for a more subtle result.
- If the shade you used was too dark, shampoo several times to make it lighter. Next time, choose a lighter shade and perform the Strand Test to check the color and determine optimal timing.
- If the color becomes too dark on the ends of hair, apply Loving Care to new hair growth only (right at the scalp). Leave it there for most of the application time. With 5 minutes left, work the color from the new growth through the rest of hair. When application time is finished, rinse.
