Customer Reviews of Clif Bar Energy Bar, Chocolate Brownie, 2.4-Ounce Bars, 12 Count (Pack of 2)

Customer Review: Simply the best-tasting, healthiest, and most DIGESTIBLE...
Summary: 5 Stars

...energy bar on the market! I am impressed with all of ClifBar's products, especially this one, the Builder's Bar, and their Energy Gels.

The Energy Bars don't have as much protein as the Builder's Bar, and the protein is derived from soy rather than whey---and some people believe whey to be the much better quality protein. Personally I haven't seen any convincing data on that. Me, I use these bars more as a carb replacement right after a hard workout or run, since I get the replacement protein from drinking about 12oz of chocolate whole milk.

Where these CB Energy bars really stand out though, is when used as a pre-run or pre-workout meal. I have eaten one of these and then ran about an hour later, with no ill effects like gassiness or cramping---which goes to show how easily and quickly digestible this bar is, compared to other energy bars on the market (Powerbars are some of the worst, in my experience) which take a lot longer to get through your system because they are full of highly processed ingredients.

* ADDED 3/01/09: Wow, these bars are actually good to eat DURING a run, too...at around 250 calories, you are getting roughly the caloric equivalent of 2.5 gels plus they contain a little protein, which most gels DON'T have at all. I brought one of these along for a 17 mile, 2.5 hour run yesterday, ate 1/3 of it every 5 miles, had plenty of energy and zero stomach issues. Really goes to show just how easily digestible they are, and used like this, they are a very economical alternative to gels, plus less packaging goes into the local landfill!

Customer Review: Not the best
Summary: 2 Stars

When I first discovered clif I went to their site, read the wonderful ingredients, and I really do love the company. I bought and have tried now about 9 different flavors and this one was my least favorite. The chocolate flavor was very weak, and the bar itself was a bit dry. I had bought the 24 of these thinking how could I go wrong with brownie. I have 4 kids and I live with other relatives so it seemed like a safe bet. Eventually after about 3 months they were gone where these others flew outta here. It was the general consensus of 9 of us, not to get this one again. Perhaps the combo of chocolate and oats? but really the chocolate chip bar was better. The ones we like the best seemed to be the Blueberry Crisp, and the White Chocolate Macadamia. One of my sons like the peanut butter crunch out of all the ones containing peanuts the best. I can not try them(peanut allergy). He is such a picky eater and I was delighted he enjoyed these. My other son....he likes the carrot cake, even though he really does not like actual carrot cake, I think he likes the spice taste. He is 18 and going through fireman training. He loves that they keep him full, the protein content, and that he can replace a meal with one. Really all the flavors I have tried have been good..this one is kinda blah though.

Customer Review: Good bars, for the most part
Summary: 4 Stars

I have been getting these Cliff bars for about a year now, I like them for a quick snack in the afternoon at work when nothing else is handy except the vending machine junk. I have also have them about an hour before I go for a bicycle ride, which stave's off hunger until I get home.

I like them, they are somewhat tasty, not sweet, not cardboardy, but for what they actually are, they are healthy, and that is what I like about them more than anything. The different flavors don't seem to have that much of a different flavor, it all seems to be about the same, maybe the carrot cake one is different enough, but the chocolate chip ones really ought to have more chocolate chips or more chocolate flavor than they do, but they don't, not as much as I would like. Maybe you could eat one with some Hershey's chocolate chips or something; there's an idea.

But, in the end, they are a good snack, good for that energy especially if you are out in the wild somewhere, or just hungry. I always feel I need to take at least 8 oz of water with them, like a lot of protein bars require, but then you should anyway. Also, they are not tough to chew, they are soft enough, but not too soft.

I'll keep buying them, so that says something.

Customer Review: Some Clif bars are good, some bad...these are average.
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought a bunch of these bars based on my liking of the chocolate chip flavor. Yes, Clif bars aren't exactly good for you (44g carbs, 20g sugar!), and yes, they're small for the price, but somehow I got addicted to them. I bought a bunch of these in bulk (with free shipping!). Well, after this set, I might switch to Powerbar Triple Threat bars (a good alternative) instead.

I'll admit that this flavor does have a thick, dark chocolate flavor, and will remind you of the richness of oven-baked brownies. In a way, it's too much though...as a post-workout snack they're not too bad, but if you eat more than 2-3 a week you'll likely get sick of them. They're just too dense and leave a strange aftertaste in your mouth.

If you like Clif bars, try the Oatmeal Raisin Walnut or Cherry Almond flavors instead. They're not much better for you, but at least they're more in the "healthy lifestyle" mindset. This is more like a candy bar.

Customer Review: Great Price and Decent Dark Chocolate Taste
Summary: 4 Stars

This is one of the 4 different Clif Bars I tasted that did not have that overwelming "Clif Bar" taste stand out over the actual flavor of what the bar should taste like. The chocolate flavor is like a dark chocolate and not sweet. If you like dark chocolate over milk chocolate, you'll appreciate the flavor more then those who don't. The consistency is kinda of thick and similar to brownie with a small bit of crispyness that all Clif Bars have. I currently have the Black Cherry Almond and this one to switch back and forth with. I want to get more diff flavors to change up each day. Some people may complain about a mild chalkiness. But I think it's a good interpretation of a brownie with oats. As long as you don't have it every single day, you won't get sick of it. Even the most tasty thing can be tiring if you have it everyday.
