I think these function similar to carb gels with one exception: you have to chew them. I find that they stick to my teeth (which I hate, no matter what type of food I'm eating). I have only used them prior to a workout, not during. I found that they are fine to use before a workout. However, if I had to chew them while trying to stay on pace during a run I don't think I'd like it (it's too much effort when you are trying to push yourself during a workout). In addition, I think they would be good to use if I were cycling instead of running because I'm able to chew more easily while cycling.
In short, I give the Clif Shot Bloks 3 out 5 stars because you have to chew them. I think they taste good but they seem unnecessary given that you can simply buy a carb gel and not worry about chewing anything.
