Customer Reviews of Col. Conk Worlds Famous Shaving Soap, Bay Rum (Net Weight 2.25 Oz)Customer Review: Love it! Summary: 5 Stars
Have been using this product for a couple of days now and love it. In response to a review I saw that the soap bar slides around, that is not really true, while yes, it is smaller than the base of the shaving mug, the soap seats itself to the holder after the first use so it does not move around. Has a nice and almost unnoticeable smell, so that is good in that I have aftershave for smell. Works up an OK lather, not like what you would get out of a can, but still, when you're brushing it on with a brush, it is still good. I love using this method for shaving and had tried it before several years ago, but did not have a quality brush or stand for it, so I did not know that I was not doing it correctly. I like this soap and will probably be buying more of it and have definitely shifted to this style of shaving vs the can and will never go back. Now, I just wished I was skilled enough to use a straight razor, then the experience would be complete and matching that of my grandfather. Oh yes, I am now currently using a Tweezerman badger hair brush and a Merkur Model 180 razor, now I love to shave!
Customer Review: Never going back to the can. Summary: 4 Stars
MT double edge experience started last year at Christmas when I was given a nice Merkur, a sampler of blades, stand, bowl, brush, and a puck of the Col.Conk's Bay Rum soap. I have never looked back! Fewer ingrown hairs, fewer bumps, less burn, better glide and a GREAT smell. I have used both the Bay Rum and the Lime. While I like them both, I prefer the Bay Rum. I goes best with the Burt's Bees Bay Rum balm I use after shaving. The trick to getting the best really dense lather that won't dry on your face is to use less water than you think you should while whipping with your brush. I find using a series of small circles on my face to apply the soap helps my beard stand up properly. The glide I get from this soap is AMAZING and it doesn't leave you feeling overly tight and chemical laden like that junk in a can. Heck, it even tastes ok....no I didn't eat it, but have gotten it on my lips. A puck will last for months and smells just as good when finished as when it was opened. Maybe I got lucky, but I don't feel a need to shop for other brands anymore!
Customer Review: Nice price nice smell! Summary: 4 Stars
I started wet shaving with The Art of Shaving starter kit, and recently got a full sized kit (both were lemon).
I wanted to try some other soaps, and "Bay rum" sounded great! I'll say, I was expecting a more rummy smell and less bay leaf, but the smell has grown on me and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Unlike the art of shaving (casswell massey and many others are the same) this is a glycerin soap. So it's a bit softer, sticky, and seems to make a thicker lather, and takes less work to get to a lather. (Although still not as easy/thick as a cream but i like the soaps).
Also you can more easily smell it while shaving creating a much more enjoyable experience. The only knock is it seems like this will wear down quicker then the soap from the art of shaving... then again it is about half the price.
Great stuff, I'll buy another when mine runs out!
Customer Review: First shave soap used Summary: 4 Stars
I, like many others, recently switched to brush and DE shaving. I purchased a kit that came with this soap, along with a brush, stand, bowl, and 2-Trac razor (which was quickly shelved when my Parker 22R arrived). I have to say, with a little practice I managed to work up a decent lather but it was difficult to get the hang of. Once I did get that nice lather going it was actually a delight to shave and I found myself looking forward to it, rather than dreading it with my old razor and aerosol foam.
My only qualms are the soap scum left behind (as another reviewer noted) especially on my razor - dulling up the shine - and the scent could actually be a bit stronger. It's an amazing smell that reminds me of this old fashioned barbershop my dad used to take me to as a kid. I'm thinking about buying the Bay Rum aftershave to let the scent linger a bit longer.
Customer Review: Old Time Shave Soap Summary: 3 Stars
I should point out that even though I gave it a 3, its definitely a good product. My personal preference is based on the scent, which I don't like. That shouldn't detract people from buying this, as all the colonel's soaps make great lather for shaving and I will be buying their lime soap again.
I thought I would try this as Bay Rum is a very popular scent for old time barbershops in the US, coming from the UK I was unfamiliar with it and thought I would try it based on other peoples reviews on shaving forums, When I got it, I realised the scent was not for me, but I REALLY would recommend people to check this out if they like the smell of Bay Rum. It's a really good soap.
My son took the soap off me and loves it, so its good - just not for me.
