Customer Review: wasn't as effective as my curling iron

I purchased the set of hot rollers hoping to find an easier/quicker way than a curling iron to smooth out my naturally curly hair and add back some curl after blow drying it with a round brush.
As a newbie to hot rollers, I didn't find it too hard to put the rollers in, but I was sure stymied by that clip! No way of putting it in seemed to be all that effective at holding the roller in place! Another reviewer shared a link to a video on putting in the rollers that helped on that score, though the clips are still pretty bad at holding them firmly in place.
The rollers seemed to reach temperature quickly(if the little indicator dot on the one roller is accurate). My complaint is that the rollers really do not retain enough heat to penetrate my thick hair all the way to the roots. The rollers were cool and the outsides of the sections of hair never got more than warm. This means the rollers weren't totally effective at smoothing frizz and imparting body.

Lightweight, heats quickly, roller material is easy on the hair. The curl lasts twice as long if the rollers are allowed to cool completely before removing.
Overall these rollers are fine, but several small things keep them from greatness. The cord will not stay wrapped around the indented base, although it looks like it should, and it would be much easier to carry the case around if it did. The plastic roller clips are comfortable, and rather ingeniously shaped. Easy to clip on, but the roller has to be level on your head; otherwise the grip will not be secure enough to keep the hair or the roller in place. The clips pop apart when dropped, and go back together easily. There is no room in the case for clip storage, although there would have been plenty of room in the lift-off lid.
My hair is cap-sleeve level, and these rollers give nice body, volume and curl. It's a real worth it fifteen or twenty minutes. I think this set will be a keeper.

I gave this a two star simply because the clips don't work. I liked the rollers, but the clips are terrible....they are just too short to secure the roller because of the weight of the roller. I like to set my hair and walk away to do other things while they cool in my hair. Rollers just fall out. Luckily I have pins and hinged clips from other roller sets (also Conair) or I would have returned the entire unit. Crummy pins don't work at all. You have to purchase clips separately or use some from previous sets hoping they fit the jumbo roller. The clip arms are 1/2 the length long than they were a few years ago when I bought a standard set of rollers. Would have given 5 stars, but having to adapt clips takes a while. I noticed that Amazon recommended that you buy the Conair Champion Salon Pro Roller Clips along with the curlers. Feel like it's a bit of bait and switch on this product. I think products should be ready to use out of the boxCustomer Review: smart clips? I say dumb clips.

The curlers themselves are great - very large compared to most you will find. Very quick to heat up and they have a coating that makes the rolling of the hair easy to do. If taken separately, I would give the curlers themselves 5 stars in a minutes.
The clips that come with these are a complete joke. It truly seems like the good folks at Conair never even tried these before shipping them out. Seriously they are as helpful as trying to use clothes pins or scotch tape for trying to keep your rollers in place. These clips are so bad they are offensive. I did get the super clips and they are OK but these rollers are so big they aren't perfect either.
So if you don't mind overlooking the fact that some team in Conair R&D clip department must have been sleeping on the job and you are willing to find another solution for the clips and you are looking for big curls, these may be for you.

I decided to go with this set because of the jumbo/large sized rollers. I have superfine hair and need as much volume as possible. I have a set of VS hot rollers that are not covered, and my hair slips right off of them.
When I first tried these Conair rollers, I HATED the clips. I thought they were completely worthless, thus the rollers being worthless and figured I would send them back and try another set. However, on the second try, I experimented a little with the clips and they work fine but are nonetheless a little tricky to get just right. I also looked around and found you can buy a set of claw-like clips made by Conair for the rollers that are much easier to use and typically more secure (for my hair thickness). They are about $10 for 10 clips (this set has 12 rollers). I haven't decided yet whether I will buy the additional clips for the ease of rolling, but I am going to keep these rollers. Good luck!
