Customer Reviews of Conair SU1W Sound Therapy, Silver

Customer Review: my standards aren't that high...
Summary: 3 Stars

One of the reviewers mentioned "a sound similar to computer speakers buzzing when a cell phone sits too close and has an incomming call" i have this problem too! it happens very sporadically, i know it's an outside interference causing it (it only happens when there's a car passing by, but only very rarely. I'm guessing maybe a car that is playing a satellite radio such as sirius or xm? but that's just a guess.)

as a different reviewer also said, i too have noticed the sound loop. sometimes it's annoying but usually it doesnt bother me.

other reviewers have mentioned the machine dying. it happened to me too until i switched the button on the side to 'auto timer on.' my machine will not work otherwise. this might be the same for you so if you still have your machine somewhere you might just try it and see.

out of the 10 sounds i only listen to rain, songbirds, ocean, tropical forest and sometimes running stream, but if you think of it, 5 out of 10 isnt bad. the other sounds are called white noise, heartbeat, summer night (which i also like), thunderstorm and waterfall.

for people with pets: i was very surprised to notice that my cat really seems to enjoy this machine, especially 'rain', 'tropical forest' and 'songbirds' it is good to know that it doesnt bother our pets sensitive ears, though 'thunderstorm' annoys my cat and makes him go sulk in the bathroom until i change it to something else.

for the price and the variety, i believe 3 stars is fair, however i would have given it 4 if there werent so many mechanical glitches and 5 if the loops were longer and less evident.

Customer Review: Read this if you plan on using the white noise setting
Summary: 3 Stars

I got this model b/c it has the setting for just white noise. Oddly enough, I had trouble finding a unit with white noise only.

The white noise setting is great if you are lying on your back. However, if you sleep on your stomach with one ear on the pillow (like me), you will hear rythmic clicking and whirring sounds. It's not too bad, and I usually still fall asleep to it, but it can be a bit irritating. At first, I though it was a defective unit and sent it back. But I got another one, and it has the same problem. I'm not sure why it is only there when you have one ear on the pillow, but my husband says that they probably used two different frequencies to cancel each other out and create the white noise. When I have one ear on the pillow, they don't reach my ears in the same way, and I hear the underlying clicking and whirring noises.

So, if you are looking to use this just for the white noise, and you don't sleep on your back, you might consider trying a different option if you think that the rythmic sounds will bother you. It is a solution for me for right now, but I'm still looking for a model that won't have that problem. By the way, I also tried another model of Conair sound soother, and it had the same problem, so I assume that all of the Conair products are made the same way.

Customer Review: Grating on the nerves
Summary: 2 Stars

To cover the sound of my wife's CPAP, I purchased the Conair SU1W Sound Therapy, Silver a couple months ago. It is light and portable, but the sounds are terrible. Surf? Two sampled waves, "flop" and "ka-flop." Thunder? Again, two sounds, "boom, and "taka-boom." In other words, the same sounds repeated over and over. "White noise" has a grating rhythm, and the "heartbeat" is one repeated beat...no variation due to breathing. Even the "rainfall" and "running stream" is repetitive within seconds. I have used the "rainfall" for weeks, not, but only with a small fan running beside it to mask the maddening rhythm.

If a simple greeting card can have a thirty second song in it, why can't a dedicated sound machine have at least five minutes of each sample? Also, the volume control dial, although over three inches in diameter, will double the volume if barely touched. I gave it two stars because everything was as described, but I'm back on Amazon looking for a machine that will work. Right now, I suggest you keep looking or get a cheap fan to put beside your bed.

Customer Review: READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY!
Summary: 1 Stars

As a very busy mother who owns her own company and works part-time in another, I don't have much time to write reviews, but wanted to make an exception for this product....because I don't want anyone else to make the same mistake I did.

I purchased this to use in my baby's room and also in our trailer when we go camping. I took it out of the box after buying it from amazon and plugged it in to test out the different sounds. The problem is, the AC Adaptor didn't even work. The power would not turn on. Then, I put in batteries to see if those would work and those wouldn't work in it, either. I tried rechargeable batteries and those DID work. So, the only way to power this thing is to use rechargeable batteries....I can't even plug it in. So my 'brand new' sound machine didn't even work like it was supposed to. UGH.
Even worse is the company's 'limited warranty.' In order for me to get this fixed, I would have to find a conair service center, take it in, get it fixed, then send the receipt along with $5 to conair. What a waste, especially when I spent $20 bucks on it.

Hopefully you won't make the same mistake I did.

Customer Review: An Effective and Inexpensive Product
Summary: 4 Stars

This is an excellent product. Those looking for high-end sound machines with lots of bells and whistles need to look elsewhere. This is a cost-effective way to calm down before sleep, have background sound for resting/relaxing, and our favorite use, to help a fussy infant fall asleep. It is preferable to the static on our TV set or radio.

We had purchased another sound machine for the purpose of soothing our son, but babbling brooks and wind just didn't work. White noise was the best. I researched several other products and found this one to be within my budget. We have had it for several weeks and it has worked wonderfully. We have even gotten accustomed to the sound and prefer it when we sleep as well.

The other sounds sound fine. I may not be quite the nitpicker as others, but they sound perfectly fine considering the cost and purpose of a machine such as this.

As for the craftsmanship of the product--it reminds me of a typical alarm clock or other minor home electronic. I don't expect stainless steel. You do get what you pay for and personally, I believe this is an excellent value for the price.
