I own two WW48GDs that I bought at Costco about 3 years ago. I see the model number is slightly different, the GD is not listed here, but this was the closest I could find on Amazon to what I have. It may be a Costco thing, I notice that Costco often has a slightly different model number for what seems like identical product.
I use one scale at home all the time. I use the pair of them weigh in competitors at amateur tournaments, so I had to understand their limitation well.
Yes there are some sort of electronics in there that "hold" a previous value. The hold time is 30 seconds. Within that 30 seconds it will regurgitate the exact same value if the new weight is within about a pound of the old one. So if you pick up an apple it will show exactly the same before, but if you pick up a one pound weight you should get something else. This is presumably done to make the scale look more repeatable than it is, which is annoying but not insurmountable.
The scale must be set on a hard, flat surface or the readings become completely wild. Tile floors give poor readings, even if you think you have the scale's feet solidly set. My tournament scales always sit on their own piece of plywood, 3/4" thick. At home they behave well on my vinyl tile bathroom floor.
For myself, weighing in 10 times with the 30 second wait to reset, I got average 150.3 +/- 0.3 lbs. (Using Gaussian statistics, where the +/- standard deviation means that 66% of the results will fall within the range 150.0 to 150.6. My highest reading was 150.8. My lowest 149.9.) That average was within 0.4lbs of our reference scale, a doctor's type scale with calibrated weights.
For our small, local tournaments these scales are considered acceptable. I've seen much worse scales used at the big national tournaments. I particularly like the relative insensitivity to where the weight is set. The most difference I could get was about a pound difference in the average measurement between standing entirely on the right foot vs. the left foot (which isn't much deviation for such a drastic change in weight location. I used to have a scale where if I leaned back a bit I would lose 4 lbs). The above measurements were for standing with weight in both feet as best possible. I haven't had any trouble with the battery and they look snazzy and neat even after much abuse and carting them around in my truck.
