Crane Penguin Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier
I've used several cool mist ultrasonic humidifiers over the past 2 decades, and when we moved to an apartment with forced air heat, I needed to buy a humidifier to counteract the dryness in my son's room. I bought the Crane penguin because it was cute (and affordable), but I find it somewhat lacking as a humidifier.
On the Crane humidifier, there is only one knob to control output. You can't individually adjust the humidity and mist levels. However, I have hygrometers in the bedrooms, since I have dust mite and mold allergies, so I can monitor humidity levels and keep them somewhere between 30-40 percent. If you have a child with respiratory issues, you should probably invest in a decent hygrometer, or look for a unit equipped with an accurate humidistat.
Even at a fairly low setting, water condenses in the penguin's head, and droplets form on the tip of its beak, sort of like little teeth. The mist output is slightly obstructed by the water droplets. Also, because the humidifier is penguin-shaped, mist comes out of the beak at a near-horizontal angle, so the unit has to be placed on an elevated surface for optimum mist dispersion. I can't place it on the floor, like my Vicks/Kaz humidifier. (I've read that the frog version has better directional output than the penguin.)
The water tank valve is located *in* the water tank cap, and the silicone gasket tends to detach from the cap very easily. Be careful of losing the gasket down the sink drain.
The top of the tank isn't flat, due to the handle's position, which makes balancing the tank upside down in the kitchen sink somewhat awkward. I have a sink rack, which helps keep the tank in place, but it can be challenging to fill the tank from a gallon jug of distilled water.
There's no way to thoroughly clean the interior of the water tank. You can swish water and bleach (or distilled white vinegar) around inside, but a good scrubbing is impossible, since the opening is so small. Fortunately, since I only use distilled water, the tank doesn't get gunky.
I've always used distilled water in my ultrasonic humidifiers. I'd rather spend the extra money for it, than replace electronics damaged by insidious white dust. I've tried the special solutions and filters that supposedly reduce white dust from tap water usage, but found them ineffective.
BTW, I couldn't find this in the owner's manual, but after owning several ultrasonic humidifiers, I was familiar with the practice: if you are emptying the base, be sure to carefully pour out the water in the direction of the arrow imprinted in the plastic. That way, you'll avoid getting water in any undesirable places (e.g., the fan vent) and potentially damaging the unit.
Also, since I kept forgetting to bring a towel whenever I had to remove the water tank, I figured out a little trick. It works best when the tank is fairly empty and you don't have far to traverse. First, remove the top of the penguin's head. Lift the front of the penguin slightly and tilt gently from side to side, so that the water collected on top of the tank flows back down the tube ("vapor outlet channel"). Remove the tank from the base and balance it in your left hand, tilting it slightly to the left. Take the penguin's head, and place it under the valve (with the beak facing out), to catch any wayward drips.
Overall, the Crane penguin humidifier is satisfactory. I've learned to live with its quirks, but when it comes time to replace it, I'll probably look for a humidifier with features better suited to our needs--and try not to be swayed by the cuteness factor again.
