Customer Reviews of Crane Adorable 1 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier, Pig ShapeCustomer Review: Very cute Summary: 4 StarsWorks great so far. Only one problem, it started making a loud noise, when it was turned on. I drained it and let it dry then wiped off the water level device and it works fine. Occasionally it makes the loud noise when I turn it on, so I will turn it off, pick up the water basin and set it right back down and when I turn it back on the loud noise goes away.
Customer Review: the elephant in the bedroom Summary: 3 StarsI grew up with steam vaporizers, the kind with the blue plastic tub, and the black plastic heating element that sat on top. One reliably moisturized the air in my childhood bedroom, where the air was otherwise dry enough, from the steam radiators, to empty half an inch of water from a glass left standing on the bedside table overnight. It was no more elegantly designed than a bedpan. It also produced a pleasant and comforting gurgle.
Then technology came to the humidifier. In some ways, this was a good thing. No doubt, some people, small children among them, have been burned by the live steam that spouted from such an old-fashioned appliance. Some fires probably even started. That, plus the availability of inexpensive ultrasonic transducers, led inexorably to the safe, high-tech ultrasonic humidifier of today, a humidifier that produces a cool mist, at a minimal energy cost, with little to no chance of steam burns or fires. Problem is, they're ugly. See, humidifier designers often subscribe to the translucent spaceship school of design -- an aesthetic easily mixed up with that of the molten lump of something school. It's as if humidifier companies were so haunted by the history of melting, burning steam vaporizers that their new and improved ultrasonic designs couldn't help but echo the older models' fiery nightmare fate. That's why I was so glad to find the Crane Adorable 1 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier (Elephant Type).
Instead of looking like a translucent spaceship, the Adorable looks like a cartoon elephant -- or penguin, or dragon, as you prefer. This is a big improvement, as I no longer fear that my humidifier will be photon-torpedoed in the middle of the night (though I do have some concerns about ultrasonic game poachers). When completely filled, the 1-gallon reservoir will humidify a dry room for well more than 24 hours -- long enough for you to forget the last time you filled it. Like all ultrasonic humidifiers, it needs occasional cleaning to prevent the buildup of bacteria, and to remove scaling. It has a useful mist-adjustment knob on the front, and a sensible rocker power switch on the back. When the reservoir runs dry, it goes into standby, and turns its little green light red.
That green light is where this humidifier starts to go wrong. In a dark room, it isn't bright enough to read a normal paperback by, but it's plenty of light for large print. Sure, I could take a Sharpie of a piece of electrical tape to it, but why is it so bright in the first place? Far from being quiet, the Adorable emits an unpleasant, nasal hum, like the sound of a five-pound mosquito lurking in the corner. No pleasant and comforting gurgle here. I can't hear it over the sound of traffic, but I bought it to humidify my bedroom, not my car.
I suspect that the designers of the Adorable didn't think about what might happen when it actually entered a human habitation. It humidifies cheaply and efficiently, but it's a pain to live with. Instead of being a well-designed machine that wears a cute elephant hat, it has become the elephant in the bedroom.
Customer Review: Value for Your Money.... Works Perfectly!!! Summary: 5 StarsThis humidifier works as how its supposed to. For the price we paid for, its truly worth it. At first, we thought of getting the more expensive ones but in the end practicality won. We use it in the bedroom. We used wake with coarse throats in the middle of the night, sometimes even very dry bleeding nose and my 3yr. old daughter would be tossing and turning in her sleep. But not since we bought this. I highly recommend this!!!
Customer Review: Works Well Summary: 5 StarsWorks well. It puts out a very fine mist (I was worried if I was getting a quality product or just a product that kids think is cute) and seems to have helped in my daughters room.
Customer Review: Cool Mist Humidifier Summary: 4 StarsWorks well. I'm not sure how much moisture it gets into the air as it takes a very long time to empty completely. I like it because it is quiet and portable - easy to take from room to room.
