Customer Reviews of Crane Adorable 1 Gallon Cool Mist HumidifierCustomer Review: The Penguin Does Not Suck Like Other Humifidiers, DFW Texas Summary: 5 Stars
Prior to getting the penguin, we bought the Hamilton Beach 05518 True Air Cool Mist Humidifier that was comparable in price and we hated it. It was very loud and didn't disperse the mist well. It was also big and ugly. We were so disappointed in it that we decided to get another humidifier, and settled on the penguin. I was weary of it because many of the reviews said it produced a lot of white dust, but decided to give it a try anyway. It works wonderfully and we are very happy with it. We have had it about a week and it has basically run non-stop without any problems. We live in the DFW area of Texas, and haven't had any trouble with white dust here. I guess our water must be pretty soft, but if you have hard water and notice the penguin produces white dust you can either use distilled water to fill it or get a demineralization filter. The humidifier is very quiet and easy to fill and clean because it isn't large and cumbersome. We have it in the bedroom of our newborn twins and it doesn't bother them at all. It's cute, and disperses the mist very well. There is a knob you turn to set the mist flow, and my only complaint is that it doesn't have an indicator arrow on the knob so you don't know where you've set it. I'm so pleased with it I'm going to get another for our bedroom (I think its capacity is best for a single room).
Customer Review: Good little humidifier Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this humidifier last year when my daughter (under 1 yr) got a sinus infection and couldn't get rid of it for well over a month despite several rounds of antibiotics. After using this humidifier for a couple weeks with another round of antibiotics her sinus infection was gone so we decided to use this every night. We have used this for almost a year now and we love it. I haven't had any problems with things growing in my water tank as others noted on the site, but the water is never in our tank for over two days so maybe that's why we haven't had any problems. We also clean the base water basin with a bleach/water mix and a soft cloth every 2 days and rinse and fill the tank at the same time. I just recently noticed the black paint starting to chip off the nebulizer, but read on the Crane website that this is a known issue and happens on all of their units and it's too heavy to get into the mist (which makes sense to me and I haven't noticed any paint chips anywhere in her room except in the water basin). We also haven't had any problems with our unit (we have the cow) leaking at all like other reviewers have. Our daughter hasn't had a sinus infection come back since we've been using this so I'm going to credit that to this humidifier since we struggled with them for so long before getting this. Well worth the money!!

UPDATED:
This product was great until it started leaking all over the place. Please refer to the pictures I will upload. I was a satisfied user for many months, it really made a difference in terms of the humidity of the room. the water leaks, however. i have never dropped/damaged the tank. i would say 1/6 of the water from the tank leaks from the unit and spreads on my bookshelf and spills on my books. I solved this problem with taping a sandwich bag to the area that leaks and its pretty good. but i feel its just not worth it. 1/6 of every tank i fill comes out. i was defending this product for a while, it looks great, but i feel its just not worth it anymore. please save yourselves the trouble. if i could i would move it down to 1 star.
it does it's job. noticeable difference in humidity in my room. probably around a 10% by unscientific methods of just looking at my hygrometer every once in a while.
it's leaking water from the space between the tank and base though. it makes a large, large puddle. cleaning it stinks as well. can't clean the inside of the tank and there is definite build up of something in there (likely my fault).
overall. my lips and skin aren't as dry. its a cheap buy. i'm an easy going person. i can live with the problems.
Customer Review: Cute and effective Summary: 5 Stars
This cool mist humidifier works perfectly well. I use filtered water, in an attempt to reduce sediment, and I have never had problems. In the Thomas the Tank Engine version, at least, you can turn the top of the engine's smokestack to aim the mist; I've pointed mine toward the middle of the room and away from any nearby objects. I have never had trouble with water drops forming on anything; I simply keep it a few feet off the ground and aimed into the center of the room.
One of the great little twists to the Thomas the Tank Engine version is that the mist rises from Thomas' smokestack. Its a cool mist and very visible, making for a nice effect.
If I must find a negative, it is in the thickness of the plastic. The water tank feels like it might fall apart at any moment. In months of use, I have never had a problem, though. The handle remains intact and stable, the walls remains straight and solid. It feels cheap, but it seems to hold up just fine. I make a point, however, of keeping my child from playing with it. I don't think it would survive "interaction".
Update: A few months in, I ran into trouble. I believe the fan failed, so the mist couldn't be blown out the "smoke stack". The company quickly and conveniently sent a replacement unit, and I've had no trouble since.
Customer Review: Possible explanation for mixed reviews Summary: 2 Stars
I bought the 'Frog' here. My mom bought two at a local retailer. All three have the same model number. My date code was 10-09 hers were both 07-09. At first glance they look identical but there are some subtle differences on the outside.
Both of hers work fine. Mine sort-of works. Sometimes it does not turn on. When it does, it runs for hours and then the rate at which the vapor is released slows dramatically even though the tank is nearly full.
Although I do not have proof it appears Crane has licensed this to multiple manufacturers who have some leeway over the internal design.
If you happen to get one with a black rocker switch on the back, then congratulations you win a working unit. If yours (like mine) has the main front knob to control flow density and on/off, then good luck to you because after close examination of the two designs I believe the latter one is just plain faulty.
I do not care if you buy it or not but consider there are almost a hundred one star reviews on this series of humidifier. That is a lot of unhappy people.
For reference I have a Crane 2.3 Gallon COOL Mist humidifier and it is working like a champ.
