Customer Review: Pretty good, and a good buy

Have had this little guy for a while, now, and I have to say it does a decent job, and for the price, is an excellent buy. However, it's essential you read the instructions to avoid, at best, an inconvenience, and at worst, a dangerous situation.
Firstly, don't put this device on carpet or a towel. You might consider a towel since the unit will inevitably "leak" a little water (usually just water that is clinging to the outside of the device after filling) but this potentially could block the air intake, which is on the bottom, and this might cause the humidifier to overheat which, according to the instructions, could cause a fire. Not good. The same thing could occur if you put it on carpet on the floor.
Secondly, don't let the water remain in the unit (both the penguin part and the bottom reservoir) more than a day without changing. This is just asking for mold and other gunk to form.
Thirdly - cleaning: Follow the instructions about maintenance and cleaning, etc., in the instructions.
I also use filtered water (Brita pitcher) and have had no problems with the white dust and our area gets our water from Lake Michigan which is notoriously "hard", with a lot of mineral content. I have purchased the inline filter and will be installing it when it arrives from Amazon - will update upon receipt.
Also, I've read a lot of the reviews here that discuss the fact that their hygrometers showed no increase in relative humidity while this unit was in use. Well, if I'm not mistaken, the only way a RH reading would be useful would be if the temperature in the room was held constant. If your room's temperature increases, which is not unusual in an occupied room (people give off heat - this is called load) you might read a RH measurement staying constant, yet in reality the amount of water in the air would have increased. A more accurate measurement would have been to read dewpoint, which is independent of ambient temperature, however few home devices can measure this. I'm not an engineer (oh wait, yes I am) but there's no way a gallon of water could be added to the air in a room without the dewpoint increasing (unless the room isn't sealed - see below).
Something else to be aware of is whether or not the room is "sealed"? Do you have the doors closed while the unit is in operation? If not, it's likely the humidity is partially escaping out the open door(s). Are your windows well sealed, or do they leak? If they leak, this is another potential place for your humidified air to escape. If there is a return air duct in the room, it's also possible that humidified air is being drawn out of the room and into the house's air ducts, while being replaced with heated and much drier air.
How can this product be improved? Well, because of the unusual shape of the water container (it's shaped like a penguin, after all), and the fact that the unit is filled from the bottom, it's not convenient to balance the unit on its top while filling. Also, the device has a handle on the top which precludes setting it on the flat (yet small) top. This gets to be a bigger problem as the unit is filled with water - be careful, as it CAN tip over.
All in all, though, for the price this is a pretty good product.
Update: 2/4/11: Purchased and installed the inline filter. Works well and is obviously more convenient than using a Brita pitcher for every refill. One down side is the top of the penguin sits just slightly higher with the filter installed. I've tried loosening and tightening the thing over and over, and still it sits a little high. As a result, cool mist leaks out of the back of the Penguin, which is actually a bit amusing...I contacted Crane and was told this is "normal" but it's hard for me to believe they would design something that "almost" fits and consider this OK. Oh well, it doesn't diminish the operation of the device - just be sure to not put anything electrical directly behind your Penguin, or anything cool (like a window in the Winter) otherwise you could have condensation issues.
Update: 2/15/11 - Contrary to all those who claim this "toy" doesn't do anything, and have proven their claims with measurements, I just filled the Penguin up, placed a thermometer/hygrometer in the room with me (and closed the door) and turned the unit on "High". In the last 2 hours the temperature has remained constant at 69 degrees and the relative humidity has gone from 32% to 37%, which means the dew point has gone from 37.9 to 41.6...not bad for a couple hours of operation.

Cleaning and Storage
