Customer Reviews of Crane Adorable 2.1 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier, Penguin Shape

Customer Review: Small, Effective and Cheap
Summary: 4 Stars

I need to run a humidifier at night during the winter to avoid sore throats and colds. This is my fourth humidifier. The others either leaked, were noisy, or had filters that dried out too easily and too soon.

I have been using the Adorable Penguin for two weeks to humidify a fairly large bedroom. The unit is easy to operate and poses no environmental hazards to the bedroom -- fills from the water tap (the screw on cap it simple to use and does not leak); no filter to replace; although it is "ultrasonic" (thanks to the person who left a comment) there is no dust. It is also by far the quietest of the four units that I've purchased. I hear a low trickling noise from time to time, but only in the dead of night, when all else is still. There is no "glugging" or "splashing." (The Vornado sounded like a washing machine.)

In addition, although to my eyes the mist flow seems localized, my husband, a general contractor, assures me that the unit is adequately humidifying the bedroom. My throat is not dry: a good sign.

My criticisms are as follows: (1) the spout needs to point slightly upwards at an angle, rather than straight out into the room (perhaps the Elephant would have been a better choice) and (2) (related to (1)) the mist-arc seems to be dampening my rug a bit.

Otherwise, this is a good buy. For a child's small bedroom, it (or maybe the Elephant) would be the perfect choice.

Customer Review: Penguin a Big Help for Winter Air Issues
Summary: 5 Stars

After quite a bit of research, I picked this humidifier and I am very pleased with it; I bought for my husband and myself, not for a kid. I purchased it to help with dry, indoor air conditions. I try to be a smart shopper and found this item reviewed very positively in Consumer Report and elsewhere. I was concerned about bacterial/microbial growth and the white dust humidifiers often produce, so I also purchased the Crane Demineralization Filter Cartridge for Crane Frog, Cow, Pig, Panda, Penguin and Elephant Cool Mist Humidifiers, and the ProTec PC2 Humidifier Tank Cleaning Cartridge (2 pack) that keep the water clean. The demineralization filter is supposed to last a couple of months, and the drop-in cleaning cartridges last for 30 days. I have also seen these items at Target. After a few months, this humidifier is working beautifully, tank is clean, no white dust. We both have enjoyed the benefits of more humid air in the winter, with both our nasal passages and throats being more comfortable when we wake up in the morning, as well as improvement in painfully dry skin (winter eczema).
The feature that I absolutely love is the adjustable output knob.
It is also quiet enough to run all night.
I also love the playful appearance of the item. It matches our blue and white bedroom.

Customer Review: Spend some extra money for something made not in China
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased two Crane Humidifiers (Penguin and Tear Drop shapes) in the same order, both units were shipped together and arrived on 1/8/11. Neither the shipping or product packaging was damaged. The first humidifier, the penguin shape, had a large hole in the sidewall of the base water reservoir, directly above the circuit board. The hole appears to have been caused during the assembly of the unit, as the break line was facing outward. I was lucky that I hadn't plugged in the unit and placed the water basin on the unit before noticing the hole. The second unit (tear drop shape) looked undamaged, and I was more hopeful that the unit would work, 1 out of 2 wouldn't be as bad. Well, after examining the unit, washing it, loading it up with water, then plugging the unit in, the only thing that worked on the unit was the red power LED, and a very quiet electric hum. After leaving unit on for 5-10 minutes, nothing happened at all. I tried setting the power at 20% - 50% - 70% - 100%, nope, didn't matter.

Normally I write only positive reviews, but receiving two units, both inoperable due to either poor assembly (the broken side wall), or a non-functioning unit. What are the chances, unless the over-all manufacturing process was of such low standards. After this experience, I will share this information with my friends, so they can steer away from the Crane products.

Customer Review: Cute, spacious, nicely adjustible
Summary: 5 Stars

OK, the penguin is cute. The head pivots so you can aim the mist; the knob on the front goes from barely-anything-happening to a seriously soggy mist. I never saw any drops condensing onto the floor directly, though after running it for a few days the floor and carpet were damp (a clue that I probably didn't need it turned up that high).

I have it set up on a 26" high table, and except for that one case where I was over-humidifying and got a wet carpet in front of it, it's been fine. Wet carpet is just a sign that you've got it turned up too high or set up too close to the floor. In my case I've got it set up near a space heater, so it's compensating for the drying-out effect of heating chilly air. Having the mist from the humidifier intersect with the breeze from the space heater seems to me to be the ideal setup.

Refilling is easy; the white bottom part is the base and contains the mechanism; the head detaches and the blue and white body is a water tank that you can carry over to the sink with a handle which is in the neck area (covered by the head piece during use). It's a little drippy when you detach it but it's designed so that it'd be difficult to spill the whole contents of the tank by accident.

All in all this is a really nice gizmo and I'm glad I got it. No complaints or issues.

Customer Review: Wow! BEST ever humidifier!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased two of these - a dragon and a penguin, one for our living room and one for our bedroom. In the harsh, dry colorado winters when we use our heat a lot, a humidifier is a must!

I simply cannot believe how many different brands of humidifiers I have gone through and waited this long to try a Crane. WOW! This is hands down the most effective and quietest humidifier I have ever seen! We've tried just about every brand, even Vicks. They were all LOUD (the loudest the crane gets is quieter than Vicks' lowest setting!) and none of them ever had an auto shut-off feature when the humidifier was empty.

I put both of them to work last night, and when I woke up on the morning, I could breathe much easier! It didn't feel so horribly dry in the house, it was nice and comfortable, even though we had the heat running. They were so quiet, I didn't even notice them. On the highest setting even, it's more like a soft purr. I just can't say enough good things about them.

Plus they're so cute! I just love the penguin. The one thing that could be improved on the dragon was if the mist came out of his mouth instead of the tops of his eyes. Other than that, these are perfect.

DO NOT buy another humidifier, we've tried them all, these are the best!!
