Customer Reviews of Crane Adorable 2.1 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier, Penguin ShapeCustomer Review: Adorable, BUT...1st one didn't work, replacement cracked Summary: 3 Stars
After my steam humidifier got REALLY hot & seemed to be dangerous, I decided to shop for a cool humidifier for my kids. The doctor recommended that I switch anyways, she says the cool ones are more effective for colds, the hot ones work better for asthma...
So, upon falling in love with this penguin, I ordered one. It arrived looking adorable & then I plugged it in - nothing - no light - no steam...ok, that one definately didn't work so I sent it back. Amazon was great & sent me a replacement immediately. Got that one today, it WORKS wonderfully BUT it has a crack in the base - hubby said to send it back because it might leak into the wiring. So, I proceeded to get the return label, etc & Amazon said they won't send me another because the problem with the item is more widespread than originally thought. I am downright depressed so my husband said he could seal the crack with silicon & we should just keep it instead of sending it back.
It does make the most wonderful 'steam', so light & airy like a cloud - it feels good to breathe the mist & I know it will be very helpful when the kids are sick!
I hope you have better luck than I, it would be worth a return or two to get one!
I would give the working humidifier 5 stars but with all the problems, I comprimised at a 3
Customer Review: Penguin Cool Mist Humidifier a great buy! Summary: 5 Stars
It is rated a Best Buy by Consumers Reports and was on sale for only $29.95 through Amazon. I'm using it during the winter months for extra humidity during the night in the bedroom, as we heat our house with a woodburning stove. I no longer wake numerous times in the night with dry eyes. It is very quiet; holds a lot of water; easy to fill. I run it at maximum all night, every night, and the water still lasts for several nights between fill-ups. I do use bottled distilled water because we live in the mountains on well water and the filter, purchased separately, didn't get a good rating.
Many confusingly complain about not being able to use the little handle on top for carrying. HELLO! The little handle is not for carrying! It's only there to lift the water reservoir, blue top half, off of the white bottom half, then you quickly flip the blue top half upside down and carry it, cradled in both hands to the sink and fill it. Then, once filled, you carry it back upside down, then flip it right-side up and set it back onto the penguin's white bottom half. Very simple people!
I recommend this item. It works good - all the other same brand, cute "animal" cool mist humidifiers probably work just as well too. Carole - Wilseyville, CA
Customer Review: Penguins are cool Summary: 4 Stars
Being a Linux user, I find penguins to be cool. Having one that blows cold mist from his mouth is really cool.
Let's see... as a humidifier, I have not real issues with it. Since I live in the Phoenix area, the water is really hard. I've been using commercially filtered water in the penguin, and haven't had any issues with white dust. Since I get white residue in the sink from tapwater (and even from BRITA water), I don't think I'll try tapwater or Brita filtered tapwater. Your mileage may vary... I came from the rainy Northwest, where the water is pure and doesn't leave a residue. If I still lived there, I'd be using tapwater.
It took a couple of days to get used to the occasional loud gurgling noise as an air bubble goes bluurp up into the penguin (sounds like really rumbly stomach). The fan was initially quite quiet, but after the first few nights it's became louder with erratic variations in fan speed/pitch. Since the whole point is to humidify the air where I sleep, moving the humidifier to another room isn't a viable option. I deal with it.
Overall, I'm happy with it. As long as the fan doesn't die, I'll continue to be happy. No problems with leakage or dripping.
Customer Review: Penguin damaged my son's dresser... the soccer ball was much better! Summary: 1 Stars
I received the penguin cool mist as a hand-me-down from my sister. At first it worked great... but then I noticed the dresser it sat on was warped. Apparently, condensation had collected at the bottom of the cool mist and destroyed the wood that it sat on. I tried turning it down and that still didn't help. I had to keep a towel under it, and 2 days of it running (only at night) the towel was so wet that the water was seeping through the towel and onto the dresser top. The mouth where the mist comes out points forward instead of upward causing the mist to arch downward onto... dressers, carpets, etc. One person wrote that it dampened her carpet, which it does. I've placed this one in a box and won't be using it again. Instead I got the soccer ball one, that one lasts a whole week without having to refill, where as the penguin had to be refilled daily. The soccer ball has small legs under it and keeps it from directly resting on the dresser. Also, the nozzle where the mist comes out points directly upward. You don't even have to turn it up all the way. If you close the baby's door, a light mist will fill the room perfectly. Since I've had the soccer ball one, my son's dresser and carpet have both remained dry.
Customer Review: Disappointed Summary: 1 Stars
I was really looking forward to having this item for our nursery, and need it myself since Phoenix air can be so dry. When I opened it up I found that part of the rim that held the head on the body had shattered in transit, despite (or maybe because) it is force-fit into a heavy piece of styrofoam. I contacted Crane and they were nice enough to ship a replacement head, but the box it arrived in looked like it had been stomped on or driven over, and there was only one flimsy piece of bubble wrap inside. Miraculously, the replacement head was fine despite the poor packaging. But when I assembled the whole thing I found the unit wouldn't even switch on. No power. I did deal with a very nice rep from the company who offered to replace the unit, but after reading more bad reviews on Target.com, I decided this unit is not for us. So now I'm 7 months pregnant, have been needing a humidifier for over a month, and have to take the time (and energy!) to go purchase another one before getting a refund for this one, since the refund won't process for four weeks. I'm sure the working units are just wonderful, but I get tired of having to go through such contortions with things that should arrive in working order!
