Customer Reviews of Crane Adorable 2.1 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier, Penguin Shape

Customer Review: Works Great
Summary: 5 Stars

Purchased this for my ten year old to use on a regular basis because of his consistent nose bleeds...not sure if the humidifier is helping with that or not but as far as doing it's job, the unit is great. It puts out as little or as much humidity as you want it to...I usually set it just a hair below the middle setting but my son prefers to see the mist pouring out so the mornings after he starts the unit his room feels kind of like a fishbowl when I wake him up. One tank of water can last for a couple of days (three or four if I'm the one setting the dial at night -- more like two and half if he sets it). The unit has an automatic shut off if it runs out of water. I try to keep this from happening but it has happened once or twice and the failsafe has worked just fine. Refilling is simple and my son frequently handles it himself. The head of the penguin can be spun completely around so can direct the mist wherever you want it to go.

Was a little worried about this unit because I checked out some of the bad reviews first but I am very pleased I decided to take a chance on this one. We've owned it a little over a month now and it has been used every night. It's a good value.

Customer Review: Great aesthetics, not so great utility.
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this humidifier to counter the drying effects on the air of my window unit a/c. It also had a unique design that certainly makes it a conversation topic. When it's in use, it effectively humidifies my small bedroom.

However, there are several major issues with it that are causing me to wish that I had purchased a different humidifier:

1. The refill design is horrible. It can only be filled by taking off the top half, turning it upside down, then refilling it. However, if there is water in the unit still, taking off the top causes water to spill everywhere. Even moving the unit slightly causes water to spill out of the crack separating the top half from the bottom half. If you plan to use this while you sleep (like I do), then you need to plan ahead of time exactly how much water to fill the thing up with in the first place. It's really a chore and a hassle.

2. Mold and "slime" builds up quickly inside the unit. Even when the top half, the "reservoir," is empty and the unit shuts off automatically, there is still stagnant water in the bottom half. This water quickly turns very gross and requires frequent cleaning.

Customer Review: Works pretty well; but gurgles occasionally
Summary: 4 Stars

I like it, it is very effective. Easy to refill (top lifts off and one fills it from a plug in the bottom.) I know distilled water would be best, but I use tap water because I don't want to lug gallons of water home.

There is some ultrafine white dust (minerals from the tap water) that are invisible and light and travel throughout the house. I can only see this white dust when it accumulates on televisions or in my electrstatic air cleaners. This is a function of the tap water, not the fault of the humidifier.

You will need to place the unit 2-3 feet above the floor, to give the mist time to evaporate, otherwise there may be a wet spot on the floor.

This is great for dry Winter homes and certainly cheap enough. I'd suggest a humidity gauge of some sort to know when you can discontinue use. Timex TX5170 Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer with Indoor Hygrometer and Clock

I'd give it 5 stars except for the occasional gurgling noises it makes. I got used to the sound, but when I first heard it it, I thought it was leaking.

Customer Review: Seems good
Summary: 4 Stars

After this fiasco with a Walgreens brand super-cheap humidifier, that didn't work. I decided to spend a little more and get this one (blue Penguin). It's cuter, and, better yet, it worked right away. Sometimes it's a little picky when putting water in it, you have to jiggle the top or take it off/put it back on-but that's a rare and minor issue with the water level sensor or something. I leave it on all night and it's a nice white-noise sound I think, not too loud but not silent. The green LED on the front is a little bright for my liking and night, but I just face it away and turn the penguin's head to where I want it.

I kinda wish the plug was maybe a little longer, but it's really not a big deal.

It definitely seems to be working, usually in winter I wake up with a slightly sore throat or stuffy nose or something but since I've started using it, I've been waking up feeling perfectly fine. I think, too, my skin/lips aren't as dry but not sure if this has anything to do with the humidifier (it must?)

Overall, the only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because this is my first (working) humidifier.

Customer Review: DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT OR ANY CRANE PRODUCT
Summary: 1 Stars

I am very disappointed with a Crane product I have recently purchased twice in the last week. I purchased the first Crane Adorable Humidifier (Penguin) several days ago and it slipped out of my hands as I was trying to place it in the base and it shattered. I threw it away and went back to the store to purchase a new one--figuring it was my mistake for not holding it tightly enough. However, this evening when I was placing it in the base, I held tightly, but it again slipped and shattered into many pieces even though it was only inches from a carpeted floor. My daughter's carpeted room is now filled with water again and I feel like I threw approximately $34 toward a faulty product--twice. When I wrote to the customer service department to explain the problem (the sides of the penguin are so smooth, there is nothing to grip onto), I got the following reply:

"Please rememeber to hold the Water Tank with both hands."

Seriously? Who would ever attempt to balance a gallon full water tank in one hand and place it on its' base? I am terribly disappointed with both the product and the customer service. Beware!
