My office is inside a doctor's suite. There are times when a mask is helpful and at least in the past they've been difficult to get during a frightful flu outbreak.
This mask is on par with what they give you at the hospital when you get diagnosed with H1N1 (formerly called swine flu). It does not give a tight seal around mouth and nose and is not rated for keeping out a high percentage of airborne viruses. But you can breathe while using it and you get some basic protection.
While the shape appears very rectangular in the photo, you can unfold the middle to make it fit all the way around nose and mouth. You can shape it to look like a light-weight surgical mask.
Considering the expense it is definitely good value. There may be times when you want a disposable mask that offers protection from particulate matter and some protection against germs. This box of 50 light weight masks will come in handy.
Customer Review: Using for Alzheimer patient with intense drooling

My husband has Alzheimers and is in the latter stages. He has been holding his mouth open and just lets his mouth fluid run out of his mouth. If I tell him about it he wipes it with his hand. Can't seem to find a tissue in his pocket. I was getting very frustrated as his drooling would land on my neck if I was helping with his shoes etc.
I tried using a napkin or washcloth around his neck but his leaning forward didn't help.
I finally thought about a simple mask. I ordered a box and had it shipped overnight. It was well worth it. I folded a paper towel to fit on the blue side and used large paperclips on the sides to hold it. He keeps it on and I don't open the folds so it fits just below his mouth. It catches everything and I change the paper towel every two to three hours. I would highly recommend these for this use.

An article in the Washington Post Health section today suggests that transmission of flu within a family (or group of people living together) can be reduced by having the *sick person* wear a cloth mask. It minimizes the droplets that can spread the virus to others. "In a 2009 study involving sick schoolchildren in Australia, the use of soft masks reduced the risk of acquiring infection by 60 to 80 percent. Given that the soft mask does not screen all the viral droplets, I suspect some of the protection from the masks came from preventing hand-to-face contact." Of course, frequent hand-washing is still important. "In one Detroit study, schoolchildren who washed their hands four times a day had 20% fewer sick days due to respiratory illness than did students in general, and 57% fewer days lost due to upset stomachs."Customer Review: Great Value Masks - Highly Recommeded

These disposable masks are good quality and fit everyone in my family well. We ordered these masks based on the recommendation from one of the major networks covering a recent disaster. The masks secure around the ears with elastic straps and fit comfortably once the wire nose bar is properly adjusted.
As noted by other reviewers, these masks will block a lot of harmful particles and most bacteria, but they will not protect against gases and viruses.
These are a great value and, as long as their limitations are understood, make a good addition to my home emergency kit.

I purchased these masks because my roommate's girlfriend smokes and the smell wakes me up and makes breathing more difficult. I was worried about them pulling too hard on my ears and being uncomfortable but was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the ear-loop design is. There is a nice wire in the mask that makes it easy to mold the mask to your face. Every face is different and this isn't a one size fits all world.
I recommend these for people who have allergies or problems with indoor pollutants like cigarette smoke or pet dander. They are dirt cheap too so you can order like a years worth for next to nothing.
