I'm 62 y.o. with braces, yes braces lol! I have not been able to floss b/c my tri-focals go blurry trying to thread through the braces the floss beyond the 2nd bicuspids. I was constantly using those proximabrush travelers -- and still do but only when I am away from my home. It was then I finally began looking into oral irrigators. I looked at the self-contained water units and they seemed nice until I realized I'd be relying on a machine with a motor and hard water and Lord help me if I ran the unit dry and burned out the motor. And then I couldn't vary the temperature at will from cold to warm and again it took up space I did not wish to sacrafice. Then I came across Oral Breeze where I could hook it up to either the bathroom sink or shower head. I elected the shower head and with the six foot cord I can hang it on the 'shower rack', conveniently out of the way. I have tried the red, blue nozzles which are high flow plastic water units with an angled tip and the low flow straight-designed Cannula tip which looks at first glance like Dentist's syringe needle. I use the blue or red flexed plastic tips faithfully following every time I eat or snack. I even enjoy taking a shower while I am using it. When I am not showering I will run it on cold to blow out all the food stuff collected on my braces. I reason that cold water should contract the gums and thus prevent small junk from being worked up underneath them during the irrigating process. Then I will adjust the shower water temperature and bask my mouth with very warm -- but NOT hot water. I work EACH tooth along the gum line and the space between the teeth, doing both the buccal and lingual side of each tooth, especially the teeth furthest back. In the evenings I will use the plastic tips and then the cannula tip with very warm water, and following that with a brushing of baking soda and salt rather than diluted peroxide b/c of its free radicals. The date of this review is 2/13/11 so I have been using the Oral Breeze irrigator for approximately 1.5 months. I have to tell you that even if I didn't have braces, I'd still use it, especially alternating with cold and very warm water--- it's like taking a medicinal whirlpool in your mouth. It's become an excellent oral habit that I really look forward to continue using with at least the same frequency after my braces come off.
Word of Caution before using either the plastic angled tips or the straight cannula tip = read and understand the directions BEFORE using. There is a lot of pressure with the plastic angled tips, so you don't want to damage your gums by 'jack-hammering' them with water, cold or warm. Let common sense prevail. The cannula tip as I previously mentioned is not angled. I believe it should be angled but I would be willing to listen to reasonings of why it is not angled. I didn't think I would enjoy this tip and its taken awhile to become adjusted to it-- and I discovered the reason why-- patience. This was designed to be a low fow design so we would not rip up our gum lines. It's an effective and gentle way of removing tiny crud just below the gums that I can't see but if I am concentrating on what I am doing, I can feel it working. Unlike the other tips, this cannula tip must be placded GENTLY into the pocket between the gum and the tooth. I would suggest using an inexpensive mirror that will take being expose to a lot of water so you can work your way each tooh's gum line. You might experience as I have that without tip angulation, it becomes more inceasingly difficult to use the further your go back into your mouth. I can do mine without the mirror now I still remain very carefull not to prick my gums with it. If you are in a hurry to do or be somewhere, then in my opinion DO NOT use this tip until you have all the time necessary to perform your oral irrigation correctly. Just as I hope you don't share your tooth brush--ick-- don't share your tips, especiall the cannula tip. And -- keep the tips and especially the cannula tip away from children-- you don't need another disaster do you ? lol! I have to say that I have come to thoroughly enjoy this Oral Breeze product. And I sincerely hope you do too !~
