This is my first experience with DE Safety Razors. I ordered the Merkur 1904 (came with 1 blade) along with Derby's, Wilkinson's and Feathers. So far the Derby, Wilkinson and Merkur blade seem to be about the same, although I did use the Derby before I recieved my shaving oil. There was a complimentary sample of oil in the razor and I used it with the Merkur but ran out before I got to the Derby. The shaving oil seems to make a big difference in helping the blade glide over your skin and cut the whiskers instead of pulling or dragging. Oil and lather seem to work really good together although I haven't tried using just oil and doubt that I will. It's a noticeably good difference using the oil with the lather though. I have a good few Derbys (25 were in the order) along with the Wilkinsons (5) and Feathers (5) so I have plenty of time to decide the outcome. One thing: do not go to aggressively, no matter which blade you use. Let the weight of the razor slice the whiskers. Any extra pressure by the user will only result in the loss of some skin.
