My 5 year old son has never been able to comfortably consume milk products. Without going into ugly details, let's just say he has painful and otherwise unpleasant digestive consequences when he takes in more than a little lactose. (He could eat butter like a normal person, and up to 1/2 a cup of yogurt every other day, but never any straight milk.)
This was inconvenient for me as dairy foods are quick and easy to prepare, but not a very big deal when he was young and staying home with me, or even during preschool when we sent a packed snack each day from home. Starting kindergarten this year changed all that. Snack is provided as part of his kindergarten class with all the children helping in the preparation and serving. Suddenly, it was very obvious to my sensitive little boy that he was being "deprived" of something nice that other children enjoy. Also, being old enough for playdates and attending birthday parties without Mommy's watchful presence means my son is called upon to evaluate food choices far more often than before.
I discussed lactose enzyme products with our pediatrician, who had no objection to their use.
When I went shopping for the actual lactase enzyme products, I found this Digestive Advantage Children's Lactose Intolerance Therapy. The ability to give my son one dose every morning instead of asking his school to administer a "medication" (the usual type of lactase enzyme pill) was VERY attractive to me. I'd prefer no one but myself to give my children any kind of medication--not even vitamins, etc.--so I know precisely what has been taken or not.
I am also convinced of the value of probiotics (good bacteria, such as found in yogurt) for most people. That's one of the reasons I've given my lactose-intolerant son some yogurt over the years, even though I've had to very carefully watch the "dose" I allow him. I've tried using a powdered formula for him, but it was very inconvenient for me to remember and mix into his food. I'm very happy with the formulation of this product.
Finally, I expected this product to relieve my son's occasional diarrhea from over-doing lactose-containing foods. What surprised me was the sudden relief he's experienced from a periodic (2-4 times per week) sudden stomach pain that the pediatrician had diagnosed as gas and/or constipation. I now believe that even the small amounts of lactose I'd been allowing may have been too much, or perhaps the probiotics in these tablets are simply improving his digestion in a comprehensive way. Obviously, as a mom, I'm thrilled to have my son feeling better (physically) as well as so happy to be able to share snacks and birthday cake with his friends.
We've used up on package (28 days since you take two tablets on the first and second day) and found almost total relief (one episode of unexplained tummy pain during the first week) so far.
