Customer Review: an important piece of the puzzle...
Summary: 4 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Dr. Melina's lemon raspberry flavored protein bar hits the spot when you're dieting and even when you're not! Each bar comes individually wrapped and the nutrition facts are neatly printed on the wrapping of the bar. The nutrition facts are also printed on the box containing the entire pack of 15 bars.

The bars taste great and they are indeed very satisfying. The protein bar is a little crunchy so you may want to have something to drink when eating these. The lemon raspberry flavor is not overwhelming and I like that.

The bars score high in fiber--there are five grams of fiber in each 1.58 ounce bar; and that's already 18% of the recommended daily intake of fiber. Each bar contains 30% of the daily recommended intake of vitamin D and 20% of the daily recommended intake of calcium. There are only five grams of total fat and there are no transfats. The bars are also low in sodium and cholesterol.

However, these bars are not perfect. They have 10 grams of sugar and each small bar has 10% of the recommended daily limit of saturated fat. Ouch! They contain milk and soybeans, too. Moreover, these bars are manufactured where, among other things, nuts are processed. If you are allergic to any type of nut I would avoid this product.

To sum it up, these lemon raspberry protein bars taste great and they will satisfy you--especially if you eat two at one time. (OK, so maybe I'm a pig!) There are two or three things to keep in mind regarding saturated fat and the possibility of some residue nut content on the bar that would be too small for anyone to see. I do, however, recommend these protein bars as a great alternative to junk food snacks including candy bars. Eat these protein bars as part of a healthy diet and I believe that you will be happy with this product overall.

Customer Review: Personal Trainer Approved
Summary: 5 Stars

Having been in the health & fitness industry for over 17 years, I have tried a lot of bars. I have a master's in Exercise Physiology with a minor in nutrition and feel I know a bit on this topic. I own a personal training business and am very selective in the products I choose to carry. I am always looking for TRULY healthy nutritional bars to recommend to my clients that both taste good, yet are healthy and well-balanced. I feel like I hit the jackpot with Dr. Melina's bars. NO!!!...one bar does not meet everyone's criteria. Meaning, if you are going to be doing hard core, endurance activities, you may want a bar with more carbs; however, most people are not doing this high level of activity & are over-carbing with a bar like Clif Bar; however, if you are trying to slim down & watch your caloric intake(the majority of people), this is my GO-TO BAR!!! Why???
(1) At 180 calories, the calorie content is perfect for a snack bar. Many of the bars out there contain 250-300 calories. Too many, in my opinion, if you are trying to lose weight (ok if it is a meal replacement, but most aren't satisfying enough to be a meal).
(2) It has the perfect ratio of carbohydrates, fat, protein which optimizes blood sugar levels. Again, unless you are engaging in vigorous physical activity, you don't need 45g of carbs as many bars have.
(3) It has 5 grams of fiber which is excellent & again, very important in helping maintain blood sugar levels.
(4) It is made with whey protein not soy protein. Why is this important?? Whey protein is broken down & used more easily by the body. It is fast digesting which makes it more filling. Finally, whey protein contains branch chain amino acids can provide energy during exercise.
(5) It has no high fructose corn syrup or trans fats.
(6) It is an excellent source of Vit D & calcium.
(7) Finally, they taste great!!! I can't keep them in my studio.

Enjoy & Good Health!!

I'm not a regular eater of protein bars, so many apologies if this review misses out on some of the subtle nuances of health food consumption.

The official title of this nutrition bar is: "Dr. Melina Protein Bar, Lemon Raspberry, 1.58-Ounce Bars". I find it only a little worrying that there are people out there who require the weight of their food to be reported to the nearest hundredths of ounces. If a couple of granola-substitute flakes fall off my bar before I eat it, do I get any money back?

One imagines that the most important aspect the selecting of protein bar is the list of multi-syllabic words written in small print on the side of the box. Again, I'm no expert on the exact definition of many of these intimidating chemical names, but there didn't seem to be too many surprises here. The bars are high in the things you would want them to be high in, and low in the things you would hope they would be low in. There are a lot of vitamins and minerals while the box proudly proclaims this product to be free of high fructose corn syrup.

As far as the flavor goes, it took a while to grow on me. The label states this as a "lemon raspberry". I'm not sure if perhaps they mean lemon AND raspberry flavoring. Alternatively, it's possible they were referring to a raspberry that has been genetically altered to taste like a lemon. Actually, I suspect it's this second explanation as I could not taste an raspberry flavor at all and the lemon was initially overwhelming. (I did get used to it though.)

I don't usually eat nutrition bars, but these aren't at all bad. They worked well as a breakfast food and also as a between-meal snack substitute.

Customer Review: Much better than expected

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I approached this product with a good deal of skepticism; most of the nutrition/protein bars I've tried in the past have been, to put it bluntly, awful, so I was really not expecting very much out of Dr Melina's take on this idea. A good number of the other protein bars on the market have the consistency, (and flavor, for that matter), of Silly Putty. (and don't ask me how I know that. I STILL have memories of my parents telling me not to eat that stuff.... Yes, I was a stupid kid. So there.)

Soooo, anyway, it was a bit of a surprise to find out that out the box of Lemon/Raspberry bars I received in the mail was....(drum roll).....actually worth eating! My favorite bar up until now has been the Zone bar, (mainly due to all the variations on chocolate that they have, so that probably won't change), but I have to say that this flavor was a nice switch, and I would gladly purchase a 2nd box of them. The lemon and raspberry flavors work very well together, with just enough mix of sweetness and a sour "tang" in them, plus the caloric content is slightly lower than a Zone bar. The only thing that I wasn't thrilled about is that I thought there could have been a bit more crunch to these, but they are still light years ahead of the Silly Putty varieties from other companies.

In short, better than most of the other brands out there.
Recommended.

Customer Review: Good, But Not Great
Summary: 3 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
When I first started eating these bars, I really, really liked them. I felt like I was eating a candy bar and had no problem eating them in the morning between breakfast and lunch as a healthy snack to keep me going. After about a week, however, I felt like I couldn't even finish one bar. They started to taste way too sweet for me. Not sweet like candy sweet, but that fake sweet that makes you realize you are eating something imitation. It is hard to describe, but I started feeling a bit nauseous about eating these bars and had to take a break and eat other things for about a month. I found that I am okay with eating these bars if I rotate them in with a selection of other snacks and kind of limit myself to about 1 a week.

So, would I continue ordering these bars? Probably yes. I like the lemon flavor, as it is one of my favorite tastes (lemon cake - yum!), and it is difficult to find bars like this that don't come in a a faux chocolate flavor. I also liked that I felt full for about 3 - 4 hours after I ate the bar and did not think about snacking on anything else after I ate it. I work for a packaging company and am in charge of a potato chip company so I always have samples and rejects in my office. Anything that keeps me from munching my way through a few bags a day is a good thing in my book!
