Customer Reviews of Dr. Melina Protein Bar, Lemon Raspberry, 1.58-Ounce Bars (Pack of 15)Customer Review: too sweet Summary: 1 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I don't understand the reason behind this protein bar. The packaging explains that Dr. Melina was tired of searching for the perfect protein bar, apparently one didn't exist, so she decided to make one. And of course, her credentials for doing so are a PhD.
That leaves me to wonder what this says about us, our food phobias have led us to a point of desperation where we would rather Doctors prepare our food. I don't suppose that means we want chefs to perform our surgery.
All that aside, the flavors are really not to my liking at all. I appreciate that this bar is totally innocent of Corn Syrup, that is what attracted me to it from the start, that and the 14g of Protein, which is generous in this tiny, under 2oz. bar. However, it seems rather skimpy in the vitamin category. A little Vitamin D and some Calcium, not much, and nothing else.
But the flavor is far too sweet to enjoy. After, you squinch past the intense sweetness, you are left with a candy-version taste of Lemon Peel and fake tasting Raspberries. All of this carried on a bar of whey and soy crisps that are dipped in what looks like yogurt but tastes only of sugar.
I'm left thinking this protein bar is little more than ego-packaging, lame unconvincing story, and does not deliver what it promises.
Customer Review: Hits the right spot as a breakfast replacement bar! Summary: 4 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Dr. Melina's Lemon-Raspberry Protein Bars is a surprisingly delicious treat to eat and for those of you with bad memories of nasty, chemical tasting protein bars of the past, rest assured that several bites into these bars will wash away such bad memories and make you a believer in these fantastic snacks.
With 14 grams of protein, Dr. Melina's bars will more then suffice as a light meal replacement (breakfast for example) or a satisfying snack - and the payoff is a mere 180 calories gained as well as the added bonus of 5 grams of fiber and a good dose of your daily recommended allowance of Vitamin D and Calcium.
Unlike some of the more well-known protein bars out there, these treats are not the heavy, gluey mess that tires out your jaws after chewing for 10 secs. Dr. Melina's bars are light, with a bit of sweetened crisp to it not unlike the texture of Rice-Krispie treats. I highly recommend this particular flavor combination of lemon-raspberry. The added citrus zip to it brings to mind such desserts as lemon bars, etc. As an added bonus, this particular bar matches up very well with coffee making it ideal as a muffin replacement for a quick breakfast on the go.
Give it a try!
Customer Review: Interesting Flavor Summary: 3 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I have to admit to not being a major fan of protein bars in general, but as a Vine participant, I did choose this product to review because my family does enjoy them. I can actually say that I personally was pleasantly surprised by the flavor and texture of the bars! Though the label says lemon and raspberry, the lemon flavor is exceedingly strong and it's difficult to taste the raspberry, though it is subtley there. The texture is good and I didn't feel as though I was eating a dry piece of wood, which has been my experience in the past.
My family is divided over the bars, however; my husband quite likes them and has currently confiscated the rest of the box to take to work for quick snacks. My two daughters, aged eleven and sixteen, did not care for the bars. Neither one likes lemon flavoring that much, which I believe accounts for the lack of favorable response.
If you do indeed like lemon flavoring, and you feel the need to eat protein bars, whether for a snack or as a breakfast substitute, then this product is a good choice for you. Just don't be upset when you expect the two flavors that are billed to balance out; it's definitely a case of the stronger flavor winning.
Customer Review: Pretty Good -- Good Value Summary: 3 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I eat a protein bar every day as a mid morning snack. I used to get Slimfast, but they fired Whoopee Goldberg for speaking her mind, so I boycott them. Then we would buy Genisoy. We loved them and Luna Bars (eventhough we're both guys) and Balance Bars (which can taste a bit like a chocolate vitamin)...but those can get expensive. These days we settle on granola bars without so much High Fructose Corn Syrup in them. I tell you all of that so you know that we have tried a lot of different brands.
Dr Melina's bars are good but not great. For taste, I'd say think of fruit loops--or maybe a store-brand-knock-off. They can be a little grainy, but for the most part the texture is good, interesting to your mouth. You really feel like you have had a snack but they don't break your jaw (try eating a chilled Genisoy bar--ouchies!). You can check the specs for nutrition. They compare favorably. However they DO have palm kernal oil & that's not the healthiest thing you can eat. My partner is a total vegetarian and he appreciated the high protien & low carb.
Bottom line: good value & taste for the price.
Customer Review: Quite tasty but not impressive nutrition Summary: 3 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Not only have I sampled these bars, but I've had a few friends try them, and my daughter loves them. The flavor is more lemony than raspberry, and they are a bit sweet for my taste, but there is none of the bitter or chemical aftertaste that one often experiences with nutrition bars. If I were to compare them, the flavor is similar to the Luna lemon bars.
While they don't taste bad, these don't have all the nutrition that I would like to see. The 5 grams of fiber is good, but not great. I was disappointed that the first listed ingredient is "Syrup Blend (brown rice syrup, cane juice invert)". The way I read it: sugar. In fact, the ingredients all appear highly processed and quite fatty with things like "fractionated plam kernel oil" -- which sounds like a trans-fat to me, although it lists zero grams. Sugar appears under various guises in the "syrup, the "coating" and in other locations.
I think you can get a better, healthier bang for your buck, but if you need to grab something, these don't taste bad and are better than some.
