Customer Reviews of Dream Essentials Sweet Dreams Contoured Sleep Mask with Earplugs and Carry Pouch, BlackCustomer Review: Great price for almost perfect comfort... Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this mask mainly because it is one of the cheapest... but I was quite surprised with its quality. If you think of a sleep mask you have (or at least I had) a flat tissue with a strap in mind. This one is so much better: It bulges where your eyes are so your eye lids (lashes) do not touch the mask... although the mask appears to look a bit like insect eyes because of this; it actually is less disturbing while wearing it. It has an adjustable strap which is nice.
My only complaint is with the nose cover: It just does not fit perfectly here and it is not adjustable. This is certainly an individual problem since the shape of the nose differs with everyone and therefore might be a problem for some but not all. There is a bit of light leakage around your nostrils which is ok since you will probably find that with most of the masks available; although the shape if the mask is built to actually prevent this. Anyway, due to the shape of the nose cover, the mask also might set some additional pressure onto the back of your nose (at least with me) and this (even if it is very little) feels a bit like it compresses your nasal airways. Unfortunately you cannot adjust this... by placing the mask a bit differently onto your face this becomes less a problem.
For the manufacturer I would recommend to allow a bit more tissue for the nose cover so it fits more people. This might cause more light leakage for some but it is also more comfortable. To make it adjustable I would recommend making the nose cover a bit like a medical mask where you have a flexible piece of metal sewed into the nose cover which allows adjusting it perfectly to the shape of your nose...
Final thoughts:
Although some might have problems with its fitting around the nose, this sleep mask is very comfortable. The bulges of the eye cover prevent the mask from touching your eyes which make it less disturbing. Light is blocked completely (with a bit of light leakage from below if the nose cover does not fit perfectly).
If you sleep on your belly, this mask might not stay in place very well...
Pros:
-cheap
-great and comfortable non-touching eye cover
-adjustable strap
Cons:
-non-adjustable nose cover
-if the nose cover does not fit perfectly: puts little pressure on your nasal airways and very little light leakage
Therefore: 4 out of 5 stars ...anyway, regarding the price, my recommendation is: Give it a try!
Customer Review: Great For Those With Nocturnal Roomies Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this because I couldn't tolerate trying to fall asleep while my roommate kept working or chatting online with his table lamp on. I'm happy to say this mask did the trick quite well.
The pros are that the mask blocks the vast majority of the light, that it is quite soft, that it is rather cheap, that it comes with a free pair of ear plugs, and that the eye bulges do indeed help out as you don't feel any pressure on your eyes (and can actually open and close them fairly comfortably).
The negative aspects are that it doesn't block all the light--there is a crack of space at the bottom where your nose is, through which you can see light if your open your eyes, though it's not bothersome at all when your eyes are closed--, that the string going around your head can be uncomfortable on your ears if resting against them, and that, despite being soft, the mask is still slightly uncomfortable to the face by the mere fact that it is resting there.
All of the above issues are common to all masks, and I can't imagine a way that they could be alleviated. The discomfort to the ears can be fixed by pushing the strap up a little, while the discomfort to your face is small enough to be easily ignored.
I would also like to say that the earplugs are a great gift to through into the package. They're not strong enough to block out the noise of an alarm clock (if you manage to keep them from falling out of your ear at some point during the night after tossing and turning in the first place), but do manage to keep you from hearing someone typing on the keyboard or rolling around his bed.
Summarily, this package has done a great service for me, and I can't really imagine a way of improving upon it (aside from lowering the delivery charge).
Customer Review: Contoured Sleep Mask: Great for Plane or Bed Summary: 5 Stars
This mask is very comfortable, and conforms to the shape of your brow and nose very well to keep light out. The bubble shape of the eyes really does allow for more restful sleep. The eyelashes are not crushed, and the eyes can move freely in their sockets and are not interfered with during REM sleep, unlike with the blindfold-type masks with no 3-dimensional shaping. The inner material is very soft and soothing against the skin.
I wore this mask on a 12+ hour plane ride to Japan, and it was extremely useful and comfortable. The strap is very adjustable, and making it tight enough to stay in place and seal out all light does not make it feel binding or create any pressure spots anywhere. It is even possible to slide the mask up by a few millimeters in order to allow a small amount of light under the lower edge for a pleasant transition into wakefulness.
The earplugs are nothing special, but are effective memory foam-type plugs that one rolls to compress and then inserts and allows to expand into shape in the ear canal. They have a very slightly T-shaped end to prevent them from going in too deep and make them easier to remove.
The travel pouch is excellent, very lightweight but strong, with a nice smooth feel and a springy drawstring closure. The mask folds easily at the center and the strap fits perfectly doubled within it so that with the pouch drawstring open, the mask slips inside in an instant. The pouch is roomy enough not to make this a hassle at all, but still as economical as possible in size. The entire set weighs nearly nothing and slips into any spare sliver of space in your luggage.
I highly recommend this item for travel, or simply a restful night's sleep at home when roommates, street noise and light, or anything else interfere.
Customer Review: you'll get about 90 days of continuous use before it needs to be replaced Summary: 4 Stars
I first purchased this in Jan. 2010 and have used it for the past 3 1/2 and just purchased a replacement recently. Because the straps and elastic starting to wear out (I like an extremely dark/tight mask). But I think it's great to be able to find an eye mask (at this price) that will last in excess of 90 days.
As someone who has spent the past 15 years sleeping with an eye mask I can say wholeheartedly that I have tried more than my fair share. And there is almost always something wrong with them. They're either way too big, too small, too tight or not comfortable enough. But the Dream Essentials eye mask is the exceptional exception to the rule. With its comfortable soft velvety interior (and exterior), generous oversized design and comfortable Velcro adjustable handles it is truly the perfect eye mask. It's also washing machine/dryer safe (just put it on a very delicate setting). I don't know how I slept without this before because this really makes going to sleep, staying asleep and seeing nothing but a hill of jumping sheep a zephyr. By the way, I do not recommend using an iron on this as it will singe the ends (I learned the hard way). This even comes with a lovely silky and smooth carrying bag (I keep mine in it all the time so it stays free of dust and lint) and a set of earplugs (OK these are lousy, but for this price do you really care?). This comes in 2 fashionable colors, I got mine in black directly from Amazon. Dream Essentials really thought of everything and really went out of their way to please even their pickiest customers (myself included).
Customer Review: The Best Is Yet to Come Summary: 4 Stars
With other masks you'll find complaints of itchy eyes, usually attributed to the type of fabric or some perceived artificial scent. There are two major reasons for these complaints: air and friction. Your eyes need air - even at night when closed. Cut off the air supply by strapping a fabric pillow from temple to temple and you can expect your eyes dry up and start to itch pretty quick. In addition to this, many people, actually a remarkable percentage of the population, sleep with their eyes at least partially open. Difficult to believe and often even more difficult to observe since many of these people crack their lookers open only slightly and often for only a few hours a night. These unfortunate souls, need special devices to keep our what their lazy eye-lids refuse to keep at bay. But even asleep an open eye pressed up against just about any fabric will yield to irritation long before morning.
This mask takes care of both of our problems. A number of reviewers complain about the nose flap, but this baby was designed to allow air to pass through the little open crevice along the ridge of your nose. The bubbled contour props up an aerated dome, keeps the dregs of the air dragged in and out about the nose hovering above those sensitive eyes. Sure some light gets by, and maybe someday the wiz kids churning out fancy designs better suited to the human body will figure a better way, but for now, in a semi-dark room, this is about as good as it gets for those of us who have problems with the other sleep masks.
