Customer Reviews of EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale w/ Extra Large Backlit 3.5" Display and "Step-On" TechnologyCustomer Review: not to happy about product anymore- UPDATED REVIEW Summary: 5 Stars
At first, I was so excited to receive this scale. I went through all the reviews and decided that my chances of liking this scale would be high so I ordered. Once I got the scale, I didn't have any problems starting it up. I was nervous after reading some of the other reviews but was determined enough to make sure mine worked properly. Once the scale was completely set up and working, I would randomly step onto it throughout the day. At first, I was quite impressed on how sensitive this scale was after eating meals. However, now I am just frustrated with the difference that this scale reads me. I feel like I can never get my exact wight because it fluctuates so much. I'll wake up in the morning and weigh myself but by the end of the day, I will have gained 6-8lbs. By the way, this happens EVERYDAY and I've had this scale for almost a month now. I know that this scales job is to read what my weight is but whether it's just me or the scale itself, I find that I don't truly know my weight because I never get the same number twice. On the flip side, once the scale reads your weight it will hold that number for a few seconds after you get off.
I recently received an e-mail from the Vice President of the company, William Geronimo. He wrote to me asking me if I would consider a replacement scale (of the same scale) since I was unhappy with my first one. I agreed because I have been using this broken scale since I wrote my first review and I knew the numbers on the scale weren't my correct weight so I happily agreed to try out a new digital scale. I'm SO glad I did. Once the scale arrived, I immediately opened it up and put the battery's inside. I set it down on the bathroom floor and gently stepped on. Not only did it seem like it calculated my weight quicker but the difference between both scales' calculations were almost astonishing. I was nearly 6lbs heavier on my first (older) scale. So far, I've been testing this scale all day long and my old scale must have been a fluke because this one is correctly showing my weight and not dramatically fluctuating.
Overall, I'm very happy not only with this new replacement scale but also with the fact that Mr. Geronimo contacted me and offered to replace my older scale. I would recommend this EatSmart Digital Scale knowing that the company backs it's products up and are willing to offer a replacement if yours is defected.
Customer Review: Beautiful Scale, Outstanding Customer Service Summary: 5 Stars
--ORIGINAL REVIEW 05/19/10--
I bought this scale in January 2010 after searching for a scale with a large, backlit display that I could read without my glasses. I loved the clean design of this scale. I loved the backlit, easy to read display. I loved the ease of use.
What I don't love is that after only five months it has stopped working.
The 'tap to turn on' feature doesn't work. Period. In order to get a reading from this scale, I have to pull the batteries out and put them back in. Then I have to sit it down and wait for it to turn itself off. Then I lift up the scale and put it down firmly to trigger the display to read '0.0' and step on. Even then, I don't always get a consistent reading. The scale is really temperamental. I like to take my weight at least twice, sometimes three times. This scale used to be super accurate. Now I'm getting three different readings in the space of a few minutes. I doubt I can put on 20lbs in that time.
I researched all the different scale brands before making my purchase. I was really hoping that this scale would be what I was looking for. It is disappointing that this scale didn't work out for me. I'm surprised it didn't, especially since other Amazon customers have given it such great reviews.
***UPDATE 05/28/10***
A day after writing my original review, I was contacted by the CEO of EatSmart who offered his apologies for the disappointing experience I'd had with this product. The company sent me out a brand-new scale to replace the one I wrote the review about. So far this new scale has been everything I hoped the original one would be. It's beautiful. It's accurate to a fault. I can read the big, backlit display without having to wear my glasses. Even better, this newer model scale does not rely on the 'tap to weigh' feature - I can just stand right on the scale and my weight is displayed in a few seconds. How cool is that?
I could not be happier with this scale nor with the outstanding customer service I received from EatSmart. I am delighted to discover that there are still some companies who stand by their products, even after they have already received your $. I wish that more companies would take a leaf out of EatSmart's book and learn from their example. I will definitely be recommending this product (and the company) to my friends & family.
Customer Review: Updated: Not really a precision scale at least the first one I got Summary: 5 Stars
See update at the bottom
During my tough journey to a lower weight I wanted to know how much weight I lost or gained. Our old scale is mechanical and not very accurate. From this new scale I expected reproducible measurements within +/- .2 pounds. Well, that did not happen. I stepped on it and was surprised to see that this scale puts my weight 6-8 pounds higher than my old scale, tough luck. 10 minutes later, no food, no drink no change in cloths I was more lucky, just lost 5 pounds OOOPS.
Today was my last attempt with this product. I put it on the floor in our bathroom, stepped on it, got off, waited for 1 minute stepped on it again and my weight difference was a whopping 4.4 pounds, same surface, same cloths, same everything.
I would not even mind if the absolute accuracy of the scale is +/- 1 pound but it needs to produce the same result given the same environment and the same weight to measure.
It looks nice, turns on and off nicely but it does not serve its purpose to measure weight that can be reproduced and is somewhat accurate enough.
After all the good reviews, I probably got a lemon!?
Update: As some others I got contacted by the company within a few hours (on a Saturday!). It turned out that the scale was much better than I thought, user error was part of the deal. If you pick up the scale to store it somewhere like I always do, the first measurement will include the weight of the scale. That weight is 4 pounds. After know that I did a number of additional tests with the scale always on a hard surface. I could still get readings with more than a pound difference from best case to worst case.
EatSmart offered to send me a new replacement scale and I did accept the offer. The new one is actually quite a bit better and I was not able to trick it into more than .4 LBS difference. That is within calibration range and definitely OK with me. I also compared my weight on both scales and it turned out the the average of the first scale was pretty much identical to the average of the second scale but the distribution of values was narrow on the new scale and wider on the firs tone.
Sorry for getting a little technical / using statistics.
In a nutshell. The new product is really good, the customer service is outstanding. I will upgrade the 1 star to 4.5 stars which is a 5 star rating rounded up.
Customer Review: Easy to clean, more accurate than similarly-priced models. Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this scale to replace an electronic scale I had bought from a retail store 5 years ago for about the same price. I had two big beefs with my old scale: Firstly, it was apparently accurate only to within 3 pounds or so, and the reading would often vary even if you just stepped off of it and immediately stepped back on. Secondly it was very hard to clean, as small hairs and dirt got caught in rubberized crevices.
The EatSmart scale solved these problems. Anecdotally, the scale seems to be accurate to within 0.5 pounds or so. I tried picking up small items with a known weight - shampoo bottles, towels, etc, and stepping on the scale with them in hand. The number always changed by approximately the right amount. Granted, the number didn't always change by the EXACT weight of them item, but as I said I believe the total weight shown was always correct within 0.5 pounds, which is pretty good for a $30 scale.
EatSmart advertises that their scale shows a consistent number if you step off and then weigh yourself again. This is true. It does seem, based on my own observations, that the device may accomplish this in part by ignoring a second reading that is slightly different than the first one. Picking up a 4oz object (0.25 pounds) and stepping on the scale again did not result in a different number. This is understandable however, and is likely done so as to avoid confusing people. Picking up an 8oz object and stepping on the scale did indeed increase the displayed number by 0.5-0.6 pounds.
The surface of the scale is a solid piece of glass, and is therefore easy to clean. I imagine whatever you do to clean your bathroom mirror would work just as well on the scale. It feels cold under your bare feet in the winter, but your bathroom floor probably does too. There is a switch on the bottom to switch between metric and English measurements. The scale display has a precision of 0.1 pounds (although again, the number may be off up to 0.5 pounds, anecdotally). It runs on 4 AAA batteries, which are included. I thought the use of AAA batteries was nice, because my previous scale ran on an unusual button-cell battery that was a bit harder to find.
All in all, if you're looking for a budget bathroom scale that is easy to clean, attractive, and more accurate than most of the competition at its price point, the EatSmart scale is a solid choice.
Customer Review: Disappointed Doesn't Even Begin To Describe It Summary: 1 Stars
So. I waited two weeks for my scale. After reading other reviews I was under the impression that this company shipped quickly. But, it took nearly a week just to get my order in the mail, and about another week in transit. It finally arrived yesterday, and regardless of the wait I was beyond excited! 2,000+ plus positive reviews, I knew it had to be reliable and wonderful! Right?! Wrong. I know one reviewer said "2,000 5 star reviews, you'd have to be stupid not to buy this!" - I've been exercising/eating healthy for a few weeks with no scale. Never having used a scale before, I'm wanting to use it as a motivation tool, and have been itching to receive this. As soon as it came I popped the batteries in, hopped on and and viola! It worked great. I'm down 6 pounds from my last weigh in. Wonderful! I was actually screaming with excitement. 15 minutes later, same spot on the floor, I hop on again out of sheer happiness, 4 lbs up. An hour later, another two pounds up. A few hours later, down three pounds. 30 minutes after that just before bed up another couple of pounds again. In the matter of a few hours this scale read me at different weights in a seven pound range. My heart was sinking, goodbye happy weight loss feeling! So, I then asked my fiance to hop on. A man whose weight hasn't changed but 1/2 pound since highschool ('blessed' with a fast metabolism). And again, he weighed every 30 minutes, he was gaining and losing weight within a 5 pound range like a mad man, apparently. No changes in clothing, eating, bathroom habits etc. But still, up and down his weight fluctuated. I decided to wait it out until this morning. Weighed myself, read the same first number it gave yesterday. Woohoo. Drove my fiance to work, 25 minutes later came home and hopped on, no breakfast yet, up 3 pounds. This can't be the definition of a reliable scale? Correct? There is absolutely no way that having to guess where your weight is within a 7-10 pound range is a good thing? Like my title says, disappointment cannot even describe how I'm feeling. I've never invested in a scale. Waited a long while to finally get this one. And it doesn't seem to work as described. Now I'm sure it's going to be a costly nightmare just to get the thing sent back, and I'm right where I started. No scale. Did I get a lemon? Or is this how these things work? Sure doesn't seem right to me!
