Customer Reviews of EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale w/ Extra Large Backlit 3.5" Display and "Step-On" Technology

Customer Review: not suitable to accurately track small changes
Summary: 2 Stars

I'm disappointed in this scale. Confused by its fluctuating readings, I called the company. I was informed that the scale should not be moved once it is placed on the floor. That was tough, since we have a very small bathroom and it was stored under the sink.

Me: "Do you mean it will give a wrong reading the first time, every time it is moved?"
Company: "Yes."

He then went on to assure me that all digital scales are like that.

I removed the bathroom hamper and gave the scale its own corner. Of course, I may not notice if it is moved by someone else, so I never trust the first reading now.

Bear in mind, "fluctuating readings" to me mean a difference of less than one pound. I noted that Consumer Reports in its February 2010 issue identifies scales as accurate if they are correct within one pound. So perhaps my expectations are too high. But nearly every morning since that call about a week ago, it will give me different readings within a few moments of each other. And to me, .4 is a big deal This morning I got on the scale, and it showed exactly the same weight (to the decimal point) as it did the day before, and the day before. I grabbed a large bottle of lotion, and got the same exact weight weighing *with* a pound of lotion in my hand. I removed the scale battery (to reset it), and set the scale down, disregarding the initial "wrong" reading, which was the same as the first one of the morning. Then I picked up the lotion, and it noted a pound gain. Good. Then I weighed without holding anything, and it showed my weight as .4 above the initial weight. Then I weighed again, and it showed the initial weight again. In between each weighing, I waited until the scale went dark.

All that being said, I'm sure it is accurate to within a pound, but if I wanted that, I could have stuck to my old scale. I'm not sure what the point of a digital scale with .10 readings is if it isn't to track smaller weight changes.

I would not purchase this product again.

Customer Review: Simple, accurate, inexpensive...highly recommend
Summary: 4 Stars

I have had this scale for a couple of weeks now and I am very happy with it. I needed a digital scale because I was having trouble reading the dial on my old Health-o-Meter, and I wanted something more precise.

I considered all the options, from the $150.00 body fat scales to others with memory settings, etc. Above all, I wanted the most accurate scale possible. After reading numerous reviews on Amazon and elsewhere, I decided those more expensive features were too inconsistent to justify the expense, so I decided to just get the best digital scale in my price range.

I had also read somewhere that strain-gauge scales were the most accurate, and the Eat Right scale was one of the few that I was sure had this feature. I also have an Eat Right kitchen scale, and their deluxe kitchen scale has the highest ratings in that category, so I felt comfortable with another Eat Right product.

So far, so good. I enjoy the precision of the digital readouts--I sweat a lot during workouts--with the digital scale, I can monitor the water loss more easily and ensure that I am completely rehydrated. The numbers are easy to see and the scale has an attractive appearance.

Two small things keep me from giving it a 5 star rating (actually I would make it 4.5 if I could). One--the documentation is really sparse. Maybe this is such a simple machine it doesn't require any, but is was still disappointing. Two: I have still not completely mastered the "foot tap" method of activating the scale. The directions indicate that you just have to tap it with your foot, but it's not that easy. You have to actually bump it a little and I have not discovered a technique that works consistently. A couple of times I have pushed on the corner of the scale with my foot, tipped it and then it banged on the floor, knocking the batteries out.

So far, the performance of the scale has been well worth that minor aggravation. I would highly recommend this scale to anyone looking for the best model under $30.00.

Customer Review: Don't Hesitate to Buy This Scale
Summary: 5 Stars

My fiancée was tired of the erratic readings that my old semi-rusty Wal-Mart purchased Counselor scale registered when she was trying to track her weight. The old scale would register five pound differences each time you got on it. You could actually hear a grating noise as you stepped on it. I got online and looked up articles about scales, how they worked, and how to take them apart. I took the old one apart and looked at it out of curiosity, just to see what it looked like and how it worked. The cheapness of the construction clearly indicated that it was time for a new scale. She had put a bathroom scale on her Christmas list, so I looked around at a good body fat measuring type scale. Come to find out that when you get more athletic, (according to the other reviews) the accuracy of these scales is reduced. So I decided that a tape measure and a standard scale would suffice. I saw all the positive reviews about the EatSmart Precision Digital Scale and decided to order it for her for Christmas. It arrived and I was a little apprehensive because the packaging was beaten up. There were wrinkles in the cardboard box and I wondered if it was an item that had been returned to Amazon. I opened it up and looked at it before I wrapped it and it seemed to be in unused condition. Christmas came and she unwrapped it and was very happy. We took it out and calibrated it, (only takes a few seconds) and tried it out. It is a great scale. It is very classy with its tempered glass surface and luminous readout. It measures the same weight every time you step on it, with no variations. It measures down to .2 pound increments. I was impressed. I weighed my dog with it, ( weighed myself, then grabbed the dog ) he weighs 16 lbs. Needless to say I was enthusiastic, as was my fiancée. After a few months it still continues to be a great scale, with simple operation, accuracy, and easy to clean tempered glass surface. Give it a try and you should be pleasantly surprised.

Customer Review: This was a gift for my 80+ year old Mom
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this scale for my Mom who is in her mid 80s (years not pounds). I was a little concerned because of some user comments about the difficulty of turning the scale on. I tested it myself and had no problem. The fact that it gives readings to 1/5 of a pound is great, and it consistently gives the same exact reading if you step on it multiple times in the same session. I called my Mom a few days after she began to use it and she is thrilled. She says it is very attractive, not too thick and she finds it easy to turn on, use and read. All is good!

One minor concern on my part though, related to the different units of measure. The scale has a switch that allows you to change the readout from lbs to kg to stone. Of course I had to try it. I noticed that those three figures did not match the mathematical equivalents when starting with any of the units of measure. I'm really not sure how that could be, since I assume it is just a mathematical formula programmed into the computer chip. I checked it both on a conversion site and also by doing my own conversion using the appropriate mathematical formulas. Apparently "stone" is a bit of a moving target, but pounds to kg should be quite precise. Not a big deal but surprising non the less. I did not check the scale for accuracy; but, if it was accurate in pounds, it could not have been accurate in kg or stone, and vs vs versa. For most people, however, as long as the scale is consistent (which it is), the direction in which they are trending is more important than the exactness of their weight on any given day.

One other thing to be aware of is that the batteries are shipped in a small space on the underside of the Styrofoam packing material. I purchased new batteries and did not notice the originals until I was repacking the unit to give to my Mom.

All in all, I think this is a great unit at a very attractive price, and I am considering ordering another for use in our own home.

Customer Review: accurate and sturdy
Summary: 5 Stars

This scale is extremely consistent. Since buying it, I have come to realize that the 5 lb (plus or minus) weight fluctuations I thought I was experiencing over the course of a week or even a few days were due to a string of poor bathroom scales - not my body after all! Not only are the results consistent, but they are also accurate - within a pound or two of my doctor's scale.

As other reviewers have noted, the scale is a bit touchy about being turned on. I usually have to tap it at least three times in slightly different spots to get it to come on. This is a minor hassle and really does not bother me much, but it would be nice if future versions of the product were a little bit more responsive to the tapping.

The scale looks quite nice in my bathroom, has a very roomy deck, and is extremely sturdy and well constructed, so I am sure it will last for a very long time.

Overall, this item is a very good deal and I would recommend it highly!

*Update 12/28/2010*
Having had this scale for almost a year now, I can say that this product is working exactly as it did now as it did when I first got it - that is, flawlessly. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case for a few months in between now and then. To sum up my problem: living in a tiny apartment, I was leaving this (rather large) scale propped up against the wall to make more floor space in the bathroom. Bad idea! The scale started to give really bad/constantly different readings. I eventually put two and two together, but even leaving it resting properly on all four feet for a couple weeks and trying new batteries, it was still giving bad readings. I considered trying to contact the manufacturer, but lo and behold, after being packed away in our move and sitting around unused and forgotten in the correct position for months, it's back to working properly again! Lesson learned - leave this scale in the right position and it will do its job excellently.
