Customer Reviews of EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale w/ Extra Large Backlit 3.5" Display and "Step-On" TechnologyCustomer Review: Superb product, outstanding seller Summary: 5 Stars
This bathroom scale is well designed, works reliably, and is pleasant to look at. It shows weight in increments of 0.2 pounds and is probably much more precise than that because I found it to be 100% repeatable. I believe it to be about ten times more precise and more repeatable than older spring-type scales. And the weight reading does not fluctuate when one shifts one's weight around while standing on the scale. That is a huge advantage over the spring-type models - some of which would show several pounds of deviation when one shifted weight while standing on the scale. Once you have seen the EatSmart Precision Digital scale in operation, you will want to own one.
I find it interesting to measure body weight with 0.2 lbs precision and to observe changes in weight over days or weeks, and even at different hours of the same day. That helps follow one's weight control regimen. Amazingly, it even motivates me to control my weight because I can see the effects promptly and conveniently. This newer model does not require "tapping" the scale before a measurement - as the older model did. Instead, there is nothing to prepare - just step on it and the weight shows up within seconds.
It seems that this scale does more than measure and display weight digitally instead of mechanically as the older style scales did. Rather, the amazing stability of the reading - regardless of how one shifts one's weight around while standing on the scale - suggests that the designers measure the weight at several points - probably four - and display the sum of the readings from the different measuring points. I do not know if that is precisely how they do it - but it is clear that their approach is sensible and, most importantly, performs outstandingly.
In some: 5 stars for design, 5 stars for performance, and 5 stars for appearance of the scale.
The seller, too, gets 5 stars for packaging, shipping, and timeliness.
Customer Review: EatSmart: very bad quality control Summary: 4 Stars
I have been looking for a good digital scale at a reasonable price for a while. Finally placed order of the EatSmart glass top scale on Amazon last week. The package was delivered this morning and I could not wait to open the box to weigh myself. So I immediately took the scale out of the box, found the included AAA batteries, and opened the cover of the battery case, hoping to try the scale right away. However, to my surprise, one of the springs that hold the batteries in the battery case is missing! Thus the batteries can not form a close circuit (and hence no power to the scale). There is no loose spring in the original box nor the Amazon package. The packing of the scale seems to be original. Unless I unluckily got a returned defected item, I conclude that the spring was missing when the scale left the manufacturer's warehouse. I am very disappointed by the poor quality control of EatSmart. I will return the item to Amazon.
So basically, I got a defected scale that does not work at all. If you aren't as unlucky as me, you will have the chance to at least test the scale and maybe you will like it.
Update on 07/06/2010
Five minutes after I posted the review on Amazon, I got an email from the company apologizing for the mistake they made and offered me a replacement. I have used the replacement for a couple of weeks and this one works pretty well. It is accurate. The digits are easy to read. I am happy with the replacement and at the same time, I am quite impressed by the quality of the customer service of this company. I feel being taken care of as a customer.

I have been using the working scale for quite a while now. It works pretty well... and I am changing the rate to a 4 star.
Customer Review: Mostly Accurate With a Couple Flaws Summary: 4 Stars
I've owned this scale for two months now, and I use it daily, always in the same place and at the same time of day. The reading seems to be fairly accurate from day to day. However, I've noticed a couple quirks that can result in a false reading. The first is that the scale does not always give an accurate reading the first time I step on it, and the second is that the scale will remember the last reading for at least a couple minutes or longer. (I realize the second problem contradicts what a previous reviewer stated; this is my own experience.)
Here's how I discovered those idiosyncrasies:
I've tried weighing myself alone and while holding something weighing a couple pounds (a waste basket or hair dryer, for example). It's good to see that the scale registers a difference between the two weights. However, if I weigh myself alone for the first weighing of the day, then a few seconds after while holding something, then alone again, I'll get two different readings for the two alone weights. I've also tried weighing myself twice in a row at the start of the day, then while holding something, then alone again, and the first two alone readings would be the same but inaccurate, and the third alone reading would be correct (or at least consistent from that point forward, whether I hold something between readings or not).
My solution:
I take the first weighing of the day while holding something, which I suppose wakes up the scale and prepares it for the real deal. Then I step off, put down the object, and re-weigh myself. That second reading is the accurate one for the day. It's a little annoying, but it works.
Also, the scale does change slightly sometimes depending on its placement on the floor, but I've learned to keep it in one spot. It looks nice and the readout is bright and clear, so those are definite pluses to me.
I suppose I'd give this 3.5 stars overall.
Customer Review: cheaply made, but its a good scale. Summary: 4 Stars
After having two good EatSmart scales (kitchen and bathroom) I decided to buy two of these (one for me and one to replace my roommates scale I broke). My roommates worked perfectly, and still does (although it arrived missing the pad under one of the feet, which was annoying but I don't think it affected the weight). Mine, however, seemed to work for a couple months and then started giving crazy measurements. I'd step on, 144.4 pounds. Pick up a 2-lb weight and step on again and it was the exact same. step on backwards and it was 147.2. Things that made absolutely no sense! I tried to live with it for a couple months figuring it would generally give me a sense of my weight, but finally got fed up and contacted the company. They sent me another scale that week! I have had the new one for 2 months and have had no problems with it. I'm fairly certain the old scale worked when I got it, but I was in the process of losing weight so I may have just attributed the fluctuating numbers to weight loss when it was an issue with the scale. I'm not sure, but either way I know for sure it wasn't working after a couple months when I stopped losing weight and could see the scale was all over the place.
I got my scale before they switched to "step-on technology" and I'm so glad I did. The whole reason I got this scale was to replace my EatSmart scale WITH "step-on technology". I prefer to spend a few seconds calibrating the weight every time I weigh myself, rather than spending 10 seconds calibrating it once and then having the ability to just step on every time after that, so long as you don't move the scale. I worry the scale has been moved, so I ended up doing the 10 second calibration every time instead of the quick 2-3 second one. I wouldn't buy it again now that it has "step-on technology" but if thats something you're looking for, this is a good bed. Solid scale with excellent company support/replacement if it is defective.
Customer Review: Mixed bag Summary: 3 Stars
I can live with this scale -- not thrilled, but I don't regret the purchase.
The best thing about it is the display - I can read it without putting on my glasses (and then having them fall off because I'm looking down!). It's comfortably large and feels solid.
Three things I'm not crazy about:
a) It is hard to turn on. It seems to need a sharp, sudden tap, as opposed to gradual pressure. I've been unable to turn it reliably without creating a noise. I can't turn it on by tapping my foot on the top unless I press quite hard. Sometimes I turn it on by lifting an edge of the scale with my toe and letting it drop. One day I dropped a small box next to the scale, and it turned on, even though the box fell about 1-2 feet away. This is repeatable. But toe-tapping is ineffective unless I'm wearing hard-soled shoes (not often the case when I weigh myself).
b) We keep the scale against the wall so that it's not an obstacle in the bathroom. It makes a loud rattling noise when you try to drag it across the floor. My old scale was much quieter. But, on the bright side, the rattling seems to be effective in turning the scale on!
c) It offers one-tenth of a pound precision, but not accuracy. I was originally excited to see that I could weigh myself with finer granularity than a pound. But it's erratic. For example, I just weighed myself at 154.0 pounds. I then weighed myself while holding .7 pounds of objects, the scale still reported my weight as 154.0. Then when I increased it to 1.1 extra pounds, the scale read 154.8. So there is quite a bit of rounding going on, and if you want to micromanage your weight, this is not the scale for you.
We've had this scale for quite awhile, and it hasn't needed batteries again, which is great. And it is miles (or pounds?) better than the old one we had, so thumbs up, with qualifications.
