Customer Reviews of EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale w/ Extra Large Backlit 3.5" Display and "Step-On" Technology

Customer Review: Pretty, Modern and Accurate
Summary: 4 Stars

Having designed electronic measuring equipment I tend to be a bit more picky about my bathroom scales than the average customer... I value linearity, accuracy and repeatability (even if it doesn't matter that much if my weight fluctuates by a half pound here and there)

This scale sure is a pretty thing and has incredibly easy to read numbers (The 3.5" is a misstatement, the display is 3.5 inches -wide-, not high. The numbers are comparable to other 1.3" high scales) The "tap to wake" is a bit inconsistent; sometimes it takes a subtle tap, sometimes a sharp thumping with a foot isn't enough to start it up. Not a deal breaker but enough to lose a star in my rating.

By my testing the scale is accurate within my typical weight range and very repeatable but watch out for the "fake repeatability" that's typical of scales in this price range: If you step on the scale with a weight that's pretty close to the previous reading it'll give you the same number. Here's a simple test: weight yourself, then weight yourself again holding a half-pound can of food. The scale will show no change in weight. Now step on holding a gallon of water and the scale shows a seven pound weight gain. Step back on holding the can of food and the scale now registers that extra half pound. Put down the can and step on one last time - the scale will again show the weight as if you're still holding the can. I have no idea how long the scale "remembers" the last reading or how big a change it takes to force a new reading but if I want to make sure a small change in weight is accurately measured I make sure to step on extra-heavy or extra-light (put some of your weight on a nearby countertop) and -then- step back on with the weight I want to measure. Again, please note that this behavior is not specific to this scale; most in this price range will show a similar "repeatability" feature.

Customer Review: Great value for a reliable scale!
Summary: 4 Stars

I read tons of reviews of lots of scales before finally purchasing this scale. All in all, I am very happy with it. I love the blue back-lighting & easy read-out. Previously, I had a Health-O-Meter scale which supposedly never needed a replacement battery, but it would often give a different weight several times in a row & I suspected it needed to be sent to the scale cemetary. The EatSmart scale proved me right as not only has it given me the same weight each time I've weighed myself for accuracy purposes, but my old scale had also added 4lbs on. Not good when you're trying to lose weight & need every tenth of a pound for motivation!

Speaking of tenths of a pound, I love that this gives you increments of tenths. My old scale would just do half pounds. It's really nice to see what I weigh more accurately (again, more motivation).

The only cons that I've found in the 2+ weeks I've had it are that it does take a little while for your weight to display. The Health-O-Meter would display almost instantly. So not the end of the world, but just something to get used to. Also, it's a bit annoying to turn on. It's not one of those tap your foot on the corner to turn on. I practically have to turn it upside down & almost bang it on the floor to get it on. I'm not sure if it's just mine or if I'm doing something wrong. I've tried tapping every corner of the scale, lightly & with more pressure & it doesn't do anything. There were no directions with the scale so I'm not sure what to do about that. Lastly, it's wider than my old scale so it doesn't tuck in as easily in between the cabinet & toilet so if space is an issue, this may be a small problem for you.

In my opinion, the pros far outweigh the insignificant cons. It's really a great deal on a nice-looking, reliable scale that easily complements most any home decor. I really don't think you can go wrong!

Customer Review: Second Try Works Like a Charm
Summary: 5 Stars

I'll preface this by saying that my first scale received by EatSmart didn't seem to function properly. Had some issues with capturing the weight by a large margin and I'm chalking it up to just being a dud. This happens in all forms of electronics. Thankfully they proactively sent out a replacement scale that has worked great.

First, as you can see it's an attractive scale. The numbers are real big if you're someone with poor eyesight or not looking to strain too early in the morning. The glass fits any decor and gives it a modern look. It's also not real heavy and is thin enough to fit standing up in corners or crevices of the bathroom.

As for accuracy, this one has been as accurate as I've seen from a digital scale. I tested some weights I had and they match up accurately and give the same reading each time I've added them to the scale or held them while on the scale. Another nice aspect is that it seems to lock in the number quickly instead of bouncing up and down like some others can do for 30 seconds. I also haven't noticed huge fluctuations like other scales can have.

My only gripes which is minor is that if you move the scale a bit, it sort of needs to be self-calibrated. It does it on it's own and gives a C signal on the scale, but if you aren't aware of this, you may think you've added an extra 5 pounds from the previous day. Just step off, give it a minute, and try again. Mind you this is only if you've really moved the thing such as picking it up, turning it around, and carrying it with you. I slide it in and out in the bathroom and never have a calibration issue.

Overall it's arguably the most accurate digital scale I've ever had and one of the most affordable on the site. Might not have some of the bells and whistles others tout, but if you're just looking for an accurate weight reading, this is a great choice.

Customer Review: UPDATE!! *****Step-on technology. Unfoturnately not for me.

OLD WHINY REVIEW:
I ordered and received my EatSmart scale about a week ago. Rather than pay an extra $10 or so for the "step on technology", I ordered the one everyone raved about. It required a heel tap to turn on. And I agree with everyone too, that the tap doesn't work very well, instructional video notwithstanding, and you need to give it a little toe lift. But never mind, aside from that it has worked very well, most impressive being the consistent identical readings. But it bugs me that the step-on technology version NOW costs the same as the one I bought a week ago. That's the 3 star explanation. Compared to the same scale with step on, it is a 3 star or worse. But...that's not your problem.

NEW: Well you guessed it. The seller contacted me and gave me an upgrade which I frankly did not deserve. The original scale was beautiful and worked consistently, and as advertised. I was peevish because the step on came out a day or two after I got it, and for the same price. Mr. Geronimo (cool name) sent the new one out without my even requesting it. Interacting with him was like talking to your favorite neighborhood shop owner. A rare breed on the web. Oh, and while I'm at it, I want to plug the digital precision scale EatSmart Precision Pro Digital Kitchen Scale, Silver If you're dieting and counting calories (forget fad diets, you gotta count) you absolutely, positively, need this precise, so easy to use food scale to measure and know exactly how many calories you're taking it. While keeping track of all that fat loss with the EatSmart bathroom scale EatSmart Digital Bathroom Scale w/ Extra Large Backlit 3.5" Display and "Step-On" Technology.

Customer Review: Great Looking Scale....BUT
Summary: 4 Stars

The first thing I would like to say about this product is how unique it is. I love the design of it and it adds a nice little touch to what would be an otherwise pretty drab bathroom. The scale comes in a well packed container so you shouldn't have to worry about damage on its trip to your front door. My one and only concern with this scale is that it comes with a sticker on the lower portion of it that basically instructs you on how to use it. The sticker says something to the effect of "Press down firmly HERE." after placing the batteries in the scale(included in packaging) I began my first test, I pressed down on the sticker...nothing. I stepped back off and tried this a couple other times...nothing. so I stepped on with both feet hoping to activate the sensors. Still nothing. Eventually I came across the remedy which was that it essentially had to be lifted off its front two feet and onto its back two using your foot, something like a teeter-totter. I assume that since this scale works with 4 sensors that they are placed in the feet. Now when I pressed down on the back two and lift the front two up the scale activates...The trouble with this is that when you remove your foot or try to let it down slowly back onto the floor you often times find that it slams onto your hardwood floor or tile surface. My concern with this is that since the sensors must be placed in the feet, that over time I may end up ruining the scale or make it read inaccurately. Some people may not be bothered by this and I may be the only one reviewing it that has this problem. But its in my opinion that this is a design flaw and not very well thought out. So far it seems to be giving me a fairly accurate reading...but its down the long road that really gives me more concern. Its not enough for me to say stay away from this. but its something worth noting.
