Customer Reviews of EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale w/ Extra Large Backlit 3.5" Display and "Step-On" TechnologyCustomer Review: Accurate & Repeatable measurements - Great product for a great price Summary: 5 Stars
My girlfriend & I bought this scale after she started complaining about the accuracy of our old scale. The old scale would give readings that ranged about +/- 5 pounds depending on what day it was and where the scale was placed. It also depended on where you stood on the scale. We first searched locally at Target & Bed Bath & Beyond, but their ~$30 scales got bad online reviews and the more expensive ones had unnecessary functions such as body fat index measurements (which are a joke anyways) and they weren't even any more accurate according to the reviews!
Doing a quick search on amazon.com turned up this scale, which has in excess of 2000 reviews. We found its design to be very pleasing to the eye and we liked that it did one thing and one thing very well - measure your weight! For $30, it matched or beat the price of most scales at the store and it looks much nicer than the $30 price tag. The reviews of positive customer service further added to our confidence.
After receiving the product, we were anxious to try it out. We took it out, put the batteries in, placed it on the floor and I stood on it for the calibration step (it was pretty accurate, even straight out of the box). I stepped off and let it go through its calibration. Then I put it through a series of tests where I stood at different spots on one foot. It measured the same weight every time! Fantastically accurate and repeatable!
If there is a downside to this scale, its the fact that it recommends recalibrating it each time you move it. If you plan on standing it up on end against the wall when not in use or moving it each time you use it, then the accuracy is compromised until it goes through the calibration run. Otherwise, this feature is fantastic.
Thank you EatSmart for a well made scale for a great price.
Customer Review: Stylish, accurate, good value Summary: 5 Stars
Wow! What a great value in a bathroom scale. I've had mine for a few weeks and am very happy with it. First, though I got it on sale, it is a super value even at the regular price. It looks great. (My wife even said she likes it which is nice.) Got it, popped in the batteries, skimmed the instructions on how to zero the scale (automatic, it zeros the first time you step on it after moving it to a new location) and done.
It seems to be a very accurate scale. Readings are consistent. If you weigh yourself wearing a robe, clothes, or heavy coat and then without, the scale will reflect your lower weight. I had just been weighed on a freshly calibrated scale at my physicians a week or so before getting this and the weight readings I am getting are consistent with that known good weight. So, as best I can tell, this scale does a good job.
The readout is large, has a backlight, and is easy to read. This was an important factor for me. The scale is thin, seems to be well made, and is extremely simple to use. Step on, wait for the readout to blink a few times and you have your weight (which displays for a bit longer after you step off). I looked at scales costing 3-4 times as much, but I'm very glad I went with this one. I don't need a lot of fancy extraneous data, just an accurate weight and an easy to read display. I got what I need and am very pleased with the product.
Thumbs up on this one!
Update: 2011-03 I had a doctors appointment and weighed myself before going. They weighed me on their calibrated medical scale and the weight was within 1/4 pound - effectively the same as my scale at home. That has never happened before. This is the most accurate scale I have ever owned. For the price, that's incredible. Still loving this scale!
Customer Review: It works but... Summary: 3 Stars
I was contacted by the company and offered a diet book for writing a review of their scale. It will be interesting to see if they send the book after seeing my review.
I am not very happy with this scale. There are two primary reasons:
1. The scale came with a stupid sticker in the middle of it saying "tap here and wait for 0.0 before..." When I read other reviews complaining about the sticker, I thought it was silly. Now I know what they were talking about. Why would they put a sticker clearly designed to be permanent in the middle of the scale? I don't get it.
2. It is difficult to "wake up." As the description of the sticker indicates, you have to tap it and wait for it to display zero before standing on it. First of all, tapping it does not really work. I find myself bumping, tapping, pushing, and hitting before it eventually turns on. Then I wait for 5 seconds before the zeros are displayed and I can stand on it. Why? How about a scale that I can just stand on? Once again, I don't get it.
One thing I should add is that once I actually stand on the scale to get a weight, it takes another three or four seconds to get the weight. That, along with the time bumping and waiting for the scale, means there is lots of suspense to checking your weight. Frankly, I do not need it.
With regards to accuracy, I do not know. It gives me a consistent number in a range (about 3 pounds) I would expect. Perhaps that is all we should really expect. On one day, I went to two doctors wearing the same cloths and got two different weights that were different than my EatSmart Scale. Which one, if any, was accurate? Does it really matter?
OK, it is cheap and seems to work but I am definitely not in love with this scale!
Customer Review: So far I'm quite impressed and happy with this scale Summary: 4 Stars
My old scale had a margin of error of 3 pounds or so. That's not significant when it comes to weighing adult people, but when weighing luggage, the difference between 49.9 lbs. and 50.1 lbs. can be $55. So I determined it was time to pay more and get a more accurate scale.
After researching various products, however, I decided to give this Eat Smart scale a try, despite its low cost. So far (not quite two months' experience) I'm very glad I did. The surface is flat and smooth, perfect for weighing luggage. It's good for people, too. Unlike with my previous scale, when I weigh myself several times in a row, the weights are the same, and when I weigh myself at different times of the day and on different days the weights are not the same. If I weigh myself, then pick up a two-pound hand weight, the scale reads within 0.2 lbs. of the original weight plus 2. What's more, I recently checked with my doctor's scale, and the two were in agreement to within a few tenths of a pound. That's quite accurate enough for me.
Because this is an electronic scale, I can understand that some people's experiences will be negative, as that seems to be the way with electronic equipment, whether scale, phone, or computer: there will be some lemons that just don't work right and must be returned. What I don't understand is the negative reviews complaining that the scale won't turn on when tapped. I don't tap anything; I merely stand on the scale, it turns on, and it gives me my weight in large, well-lit numbers. Period. Just what one would hope from a scale.
At the two month point, I'm well-satisfied and happy with this scale. I suppose in these days of grade inflation, someone may interpret four stars as negative, but it is not. I rarely give five-star reviews.
Customer Review: Disappointed - Precise but NOT accurate Summary: 2 Stars
I was so excited to get this scale after reading about how accurate it was, because that was a big issue with my last scale. I would step on 3-5 times in a row and get different readings every time.
I got the EatSmart scale and calibrated it like the directions said. It was great not having to tap the scale before getting on! I stepped on 3 times in a row, got the exact same reading 3 times. It was a pound more than my other scale, but I chalked it up to the old one being not so great. Thrilled, I walked away.
Every morning, same precise results. But I started noticing drastic weight gains and loses that didn't seem to make sense. I decided to test the scale a different way. I stepped on 3 times, same reading. I picked up a water bottle and stepped on 3 times, same higher weight 3 times. I put the bottle down and stepped on exactly as I was before except 2 minutes older, AND I HAD SUDDENLY LOST .6 LBS. Hallelujah what a great work out I stumbled upon... Irked, I re-calibrated the scale and went on with my day.
A few days later the readings were still a bit suspicious. I did the same test of stepping on without a weight, with a weight, and then without it again. This time I gained .8 lbs.!!! That's a HUGE difference! Much worse than my old scale.
I followed all the correct instructions for the scale. I calibrated and then left it where it was, even though it's quite the obstruction in my small bathroom. I have since re-calibrated it several times after testing it, I don't think that's working. So yes, it will give me the same reading, but now I don't know that it's an ACCURATE reading.
On the plus side, they included a nifty little tape measure I really like, it makes it very easy to measure yourself, especially your arms.
