I just received the Sound + Sleep Adaptive Sound Sleep Therapy System and, as usual, the ordering and shipping of this item through Amazon was flawless. This is the EXACT model previously sold as 'Ecotones Duet'---now a different name, different packaging, same unit. Being a person who has suffered for years with insomnia, I am NOT new to sound machines, fans, air purifiers, or white noise generators to lull me into what I hope will enfold into a blissful, 7-8 hour nightly slumber. Cheaper models (HoMedics) and even the more expensive brands like Brookstone haven't dazzled me with their design or sound quality. The models that require individual sound cartridges are a novel idea as to individualization of the unit but keep in mind it's a continual and added investment, wear and tear to the machine over time, and overly expensive. Don't get me wrong, this unit isn't inexpensive. I'm also under no illusion that every machine out there is going to give every person the same satisfactory results. Tastes and expectations vary greatly. The BIGGEST FEAR for me in purchasing this machine was SOUND LOOPING! I cannot express how miserable it is when cheaper alarm clocks and sound machines use a small clip of recording and loop it together into a stream of repeating, angst-provoking noise that is supposed to be calming and/or sleep-inducing! Currently, I use only the Marpac Sleep Mate 980A dual speed white noise machine (fan) that is also available here at Amazon. Marpac SleepMate 980A Electro-Mechanical Sound Conditioner I LOVE the Marpac for its ability to drown-out just about any noise and by simply sliding the housing of the unit, you can "twist" your volume and tone of the white noise desired. My only complaints with the Marpac machine have to do with achieving a loud enough volume to personally suit me and no other variation but white noise.
First off, let me say that like others, I've read the reviews and done my research. As expected, I was astounded at how light and seemingly fragile this little gem appears to be. Yep, there are bad reviews and horror stories posted about the machine "up and dying" and basically getting "fried" after only several weeks to months of usage. Please keep one thing in mind when ordering this unit: it's TOTALLY electronic. Like, fragile, no-kidstuff electronic! As with a laptop computer, iPad, or other pricey electronic device, it's going to require some gentle handling. Obviously if you drop it on a hard surface, violently knock it over, turn it on and off by unplugging it from the outlet, etc, it's going to die (much sooner than later). You should also keep in mind that the unit is capable of being electronically reset (much akin to resetting an iPod) by simply depressing the power button for several seconds should any interference or malfunction occur. I've had to do it and it continues to perform like a champ. My advice---unpack it, plug it into a wall outlet in your bedroom (no extension cords--although like a computer, a surge protector wouldn't be that bad of an idea), place it FLAT on a hard table or nightstand, play with it to find your favorite variable settings, and most importantly---leave it be. The housing and controls are rugged enough but the "innards" of this item really appear to be quite delicate--certainly NOT something you'd throw/pack into a suitcase for travel, vacation, etc. Besides, there are cheaper machines listed here on Amazon should you need/want something to take along with you while traveling.
The unit's interface is pretty simple to understand and operate. The housing is compact and well constructed and the led lighting isn't overkill. Power it on, dial in your sounds, add or subtract varying other sounds with the richness button, perhaps set the timer, and settle in. It's that simple. Plus you've got a stereo headphone jack built right in should you wish to attach some headphones or earbuds for private listening. However handy, I do wish they wouldn't have chosen the central dial for sound selection. It appears a little flimsy and upon several turns, tends to feel a little loose. Hope this isn't indicative of future problems down the road.
As listed above in the product description, the unit comes with 10 high-definition "Soundstories" or sound profiles for you to manipulate. All are quite nice and very well recorded. Really. The unit's speakers are located on top of the machine and consist of a 3" woofer and 1" tweeter. A spectacular stereophonic experience isn't going to happen and this isn't a Bose. That being said, the sound is still great, room-filling, and very high quality. The profiles are approximately 30 minutes in length and are interwoven together such that I have not, and cannot notice anything remotely distracting or in any way looping. Thank you God! An 11th sound profile, electric fan, is also available on this unit by selecting the waterfall Soundstory in the low richness setting. The city setting is interesting but not what I expected. Sounds a lot like a walking on a rural highway at night, the drone of passing motorists, the occasional car horn. Odd! As for the meditation setting, unless you also own/run a massage parlor or are currently into tantric sex, I have trouble understanding why this might lull one to sleep. Would rather listen to a cd of soothing music and I guess this is something for ASTI, the manufacturer, to work with on future models. It does appear they were clearly aiming "to fill up" all of the available knob spaces on this one. The only thing worse would be whale songs and I cringe to think about the possibilities. ASTI----are you listening?!? Again, everyone's tastes are different. Rainfall is EXTREMELY nice with distant thunder and splashing, the crackling fireplace is awesome, and the meadow crickets tend to be a little much. Even crickets take an occasional break in their chirping.
The device also includes `adaptive sound technology' which senses and responds to the environment to neutralize and eliminate unwanted background noise--so says the manufacturer. Since I do not regularly use this feature, it would be difficult to elaborate--only that it WILL compensate by increasing the volume to drown out sudden offending room noises. I can also see where it could become annoying by `shooshing' anyone or anything trying to compete with it. This ability and function appears to be one of THE main patented selling points for this machine. One caveat is that when you do use this function, the overall Soundstory volume is lowered and requires you to jack up the volume. Perhaps this is what's supposed to happen as it does utilize a built-in microphone for monitoring purposes. Don't use it, don't need it, don't know.
Overall, I really LOVE this unit. I would recommend it to friends/family and those fellow insomniacs in search of some much needed relaxation, sleep, and unwinding. Keep an open mind---be gentle, handle it with care, and you'll be happy.
