Customer Review: better than waxing (but slow) and not painful at all

I've been a regular waxer for many years. When I had a baby a year ago and we decided to live off one income (mine) and salon waxes were immediately off the table. But I wasn't ready to start shaving again, especially as I have very sensitive skin and get major rashes if I shave my thighs or bikini area.
I started waxing at home instead of going to the salon. I found it messy and I think a bit more painful than the salon. Plus I'm just not that good at it--I never got the same results as at a salon. Half the time I'd rip wax off and see most of the hair left behind. And it makes a sticky mess too.
I telling a friend from work about my hair removal plight and joked about getting the old Epilady from tv commercials. My friend surprised me by saying her sister used an Epilday and loved it. Why not look into it, I thought?
I read all the reviews here and I'm glad I did. The aggregate of what I learned was that the Epilady is less painful than waxing but also kind of a slow process. I did notice when I tried it out that the Epilady is more of a pinchy or needle-like pain as compared to waxing pain which feels more like a burning or slapping sensation. Since you're removing fewer hairs at a time, overall the Epilady is quite a bit less painful than waxing but definitely takes longer.
My main complaint about the Epilady is how long it takes to use it. I expected this after reading other reviews, and they are all correct. It takes 20 minutes to do a decent job and longer if you've let it go for awhile. I think the woman who says she does it every Sunday and takes about 30 minutes to do, probably has the right idea.
If you're looking for an alternative to home waxing, I think the Epilady is a great option. I think it's easier to reach backs of legs with the Epilady than with wax, and it's definitely not as messy as wax. All you get is a little drift of your plucked hairs below the leg.
The biggest drawback to using the Epilady is that it's time consuming, but it's sort of a soothing grooming ritual, so if you make time and space for it, I think you'll enjoy it as I have. I'm also a VERY impatient person, so I'm not sure this would annoy others as much as it annoys me.
Certainly spending $60 once on the Epilady is a bargain compared to salon waxing, or even to $10-$15 a pop for home wax kits. I think this is probably my favorite method of hair removal unless I decide to invest major $$ into laser removal. Imperfect, but the best of the bunch I've tried.
