Customer Review: Worked pretty well, but had a short life

Bought this device from amazon.com to use as a dehumidifier in my 40 cu/ft gun safe. Used one of those dual indoor/outdoor weather temperature/humidity devices to check its operation. Put one sensor inside the safe, and the other on top of the safe. Generally, the dehumidifier kept the humdity down about 10 pts lower than the outside humidity. I would have liked to see it reduce the humidity even more, so I should have bought the bigger unit for my large safe. I live in Alabama, where humidity runs high to very high. Regardless, this is proof that it works as advertised.
On the down side, the unit completely died after 8 months of operation. As further proof of its capability, the humidity inside my safe is now running the same as the outside. Can't tell if something in the unit died or if it is the ac/dc transformer. Now, I've got to find another solution to my problem.
***UPDATE -- Dec 2009***
The company replaced my Dehumidifier under warranty, but didn't pay my shipping costs (about $10). The new one works great in my safe. We'll see how long the second one lasts. It's been about 3 months now on the replacement.

When I began looking for a dehumidifier, I realized that most were too expensive/too powerful for my intended use or involved chemicals (damp trap style). When I found the Eva online about 2 years ago, I bought one for my little indoor laundry room and turn it on when I have the washing machine/dryer running. After a while, it really does cut down on the humidity. I bought the second unit for the upstairs bathroom which is open to the master bedroom. I did not want to fool with having an exhaust fan installed up there nor do I need a 30 gal. type of dehumidifier, which would take up too much space. This little machine is perfect. It sits on a shelf and I plug it in when taking a shower...it does take a bit of time, but eventually it cuts down the humidity. The on=off button is simple to use. The only fiddly part involves removing the water as you have to gently pull out the plastic drawer at the bottom of the unit and pry off the plastic plug holding the water in. Ideally, I wish it were just a bit more powerful and/or just a bit cheaper, but for these stated uses, it is the best that I have been able to find.Customer Review: For TINY spaces only

Wanted to use this unit in a small bathroom with very poor ventilation to take care of moisture that was causing mold to grow.
Ran this unit non-stop for a couple of weeks. It's quite small, so it obviously doesn't have capacity to remove a large amount of moisture (like after a hot shower), but having read the positive reviews about using this for small spaces, I tried it anyway to see if it would do the trick. Used it at various conditions, from 90% humidity (post-shower) to 45-55% humidity (normal level).
It does indeed dehumidify (water does collect in the reservoir when it's very humid, like after a hot shower), but it does so VERY slowly, so that it's essentially useless in a high-moisture environment like this bathroom. Granted, it's probably not designed for rapid dehumidification, but it did not make a noticeable difference even when humidity was lower (humidity remained at 40-50% when running 24/7).
BOTTOMLINE: It does work, but only for an EXTREMELY small space. Even in a small bathroom (about 45 sq ft), it made little difference at 45-90% humidity.

fan is not quiet enough to run all night in bedroom.
Dehumidifying a bedroom is a problem - If you get a typical dehumidifier, the compressor is so loud that you can't run it at night. So you only run during the day, and hope things aren't too clammy by morning. The Eva-Dry sounds promising: By using a thermoelectric cooler, it avoids the noisy compressor, and thus offers the potential to run all night without the noise problem.
Unfortunately, the fan on the eva-dry is so noisy that you can't run it all night, and the cooler is so weak that even with two of them they don't dry the air enough to just run them during the day. So it was a of no use to me.
This product is *only* useful for dehumidifying a *very* small area (closet, bathroom) that is *very* humid. Many of the reviews said this very thing, but I took a chance that two of them would accomplish something. The loud fan was an additional unpleasant surprise.
Thumbs up to Amazon for the easy return policy. I was able to try out this idea with minimal hassle.

We've had this dehumidifier for a few weeks, and is exactly what we were looking for.
The size is perfect -- we keep it on the counter in our bathroom -- and easily portable. Our family will be taking it with us when we travel to a humid climates in the future. It's small enough to pack in a suitcase.
It pulled, in two days, about 2/3 of its container full of moisture from the air in our bathroom, though the bathroom has never felt humid, and we have had no trouble with mildew or mold. I was impressed with that.
Also, it is a VERY quiet unit. If I walk into the other room, I can't hear it running at all -- it's much quieter than a fan. Actually, it's quieter than our desktop computer when it's running!
Setup is super-simple out the box -- take it out and plug it in. The user manual is pedantic, but there isn't really much to know -- turn it on, it shuts off automatically when it's full, turn it off, dump it and return water container, and turn it back on. Presto!
Very happy with this purchase, and looking forward to using it for a long while.
