Customer Reviews of Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer MODEL# TAT-2000C

Customer Review: Great Product in real use
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a 3 y.o. and a 1 y.o. So, on top of them getting sick all the time, we are also affected very often. With all this sickness going around, I've had a chance to use this product extensively since receiving it. And for 99% of time, the product works really really well.

Pros :

As advertised, the product is very easy to use. Swipe your forehead as directed and you got your temp. in less than 3 seconds or so. Some times your kids move too much and you'll have to repeat the effort. But what's another 3 seconds.

The taking of the temperature is so NOT intrusive that you won't wake your baby. And comfortable for you as well. No more holding a thermometer under the arm hoping s/he won't wake before it beeps.

The readings I'm getting are pretty accurate. It's not too hard to get an accurate reading. You'll get an occasional reading that are too low, but that's when you've lifted the sensor off the skin or some thing. It's mostly an operator error, which you notice most of the time.

Cons :
If you are sweating, it's harder to get a reading. The manual advises to get an reading behind the ear. And this seems to work for us. THAT'T IT...the only con.

Summary :
REALLY, I love this thing. This should be a standard item for any parent with a new baby. Being able to get an accurate reading with very little effort is priceless, when you think your kids are sick.

I'm buying this as a gift for all of my "GOOD" friends, when they have a baby.

Customer Review: Works well, if you observe some rules
Summary: 4 Stars

Despite its drawbacks, I actually like this thermometer. It takes a little longer to get a reading than my ear thermometer, which takes only a second. I use it as a backup.

There are several rules that must be observed to get an accurate reading, which may make this unit impractical to some and may explain some of the poor readings some reviewers have gotten:

* It doesn't work if the child has just taken a bath.
* The thermometer must not be moved from rooms which vary in temperature. When it is moved, the thermometer will not give a good reading for about 20 minutes as it adjusts to the new temperature.
* If the child was laying down, the thermometer must not be used on the side the child had been laying on.
* If the child is sweating, swipe the forehead and then place it behind the ear before releasing the read button.
* The thermometer must be swiped over the temporal artery, not just any part of the forehead.
* The head of the thermometer must be kept clean and shiny -- no fingerprints or dust or anything else.

The readings I get usually agree with the tympanic thermometer. When it doesn't, I go for the third opinion, the standard oral/rectal thermometer.

UPDATE: All the extra little rules we need to observe can make this thermometer a bear to use sometimes. If I'm bringing the thermometer from the cold downstairs area to the warm upstairs area, who really wants to then have to wait 20 minutes? Just something to consider.

Customer Review: Love it!
Summary: 5 Stars

The thermometer we had died years ago and I've been using my trusty hand to check his temperature.

I received this and tried it out immediately and discovered that it's EASY to use.

The thermometer comes with a 9 v battery which made me excited. (I know I'm weird!)

It comes with a user's guide and it's easy to follow. It is lightweight and easy to hold.

You simply remove the cap and place the tip on the forehead. Press down the button and move the thermometer across the forehead to the hairline--while holding down the button. Release the button when you reach the hairline and it tells you the temperature.

It claims to be more accurate than ear thermometers. I can believe that. I remember my old daycare teacher days trying to use the ear thermometers. They can be too large to place into the ear of very small children and you have to purchase the disposable tips.

I like this type of thermometer better than the underarm thermometers as well. Holding feverish children and trying to keep them still for an underarm reading wasn't very fun either!

Another great point about this thermometer is NO MERCURY!

I see a lot of value in this type of thermometer. I imagine we'll be finding dozens of reasons to check his temperature in the coming weeks.

Customer Review: Accurate after a little practice!
Summary: 5 Stars

Thankfully, my children have been very healthy. However, on the few occasions that I thought they might be ill, taking their temperatures was the worst part of it all! I basically relied on my mama wrist or lips feeling their foreheads if I thought they had a temperature.

When Mama Buzz asked if I'd like to test a Temporal Artery Thermometer by Exergen, I couldn't say no.

Placing the thermometer's probe in the middle of the forehead and taking a 2-second slide over to the hairline is all it takes to use Exergen's TemporalScanner.

And while that seems simple, it does take a bit of coordination and practice to keep the probe in contact with the skin. (Either that, or my kids have bumpy heads)! ;-) Breaking skin contact will give inaccurate readings.

I found it easier to take my children's temperatures if they placed their heads as if lying down.

The thermometer works by "capturing the...heat from skin over the temporal artery, which runs across the forehead and is directly connected to the heart via the carotid artery."

After a little practice, I received consistent 98.4-98.6 readings over and over from me, my husband, and kids. I even tested the thermometer on my wrist, just to see if it was really giving a "real" temperature. Yep, my wrist was a much cooler 97.something.

I would definitely buy this as a baby shower gift!

Customer Review: NICE and no extra pieces to buy!
Summary: 4 Stars

I will admit it. I am a gadget junkie.

We have a Braun tympanic thermometer that I received as a baby gift. While I really liked it a lot, I had to wait until my preemie was older and had bigger ear holes to use it on her. Also, ear infections skew the readings on those things. And finally, you have to get those crazy probe covers which are just a pain.

After going to the Dr.'s office and being "swiped" by the professional version of the Exergen Temporal Artery thermometer, I felt like I just HAD to look into the home version. Since it is a Flexible Spending Account eligible item, I decided to give it a go.

Many of the reviews I had read stated that this thermometer read "low". Well, I pulled it out of the package and tested it on myself. 96.4. Over and over. I almost screamed, then started pulling on the frosted piece of plastic at the business end of the thermometer, and voila! Turns out that you have to take the protective cover off the tip in order for it to work...so there you go for all the skeptics out there.

The only con that I have on this product is that it is kind of awkward to hold-you are supposed to touch this thing to the middle of the forehead and then press and hold the button until you are done scanning. With a squirming baby, it takes REAL coordination to pull that off. But it works great for people who are being still, and even better if you are taking your own temperature.

Other than this one small drawback, I LOVE this thing and would recommend!
